感情の抑制 

　「欧州大陸人は感情抑制ができない人種だから執事になることはできない。感情抑制ができるのは英国人だけである。大陸人は、大まかに言ってケルト人もだが、概して激しい感情を覚えるとき抑制することができないのである」（松岡訳）
　この文章はカズオ・イシグロ著『日の名残り』からの抜粋であるが、これを読んで、英国人と日本人は性格が似ていると思った。というのは、日本人は感情抑制を美徳と考えているからである。この事は新渡戸稲造著『武士道』第１１章に書かれている。
　「冷静沈着な振る舞い、精神の落ち着きは、いかなる類の情熱によってもかき乱されることはない」
　「男も女も自己の魂が揺り動かされるのを感じるときは、まず本能的に、その動揺が外に表れないように平静を保とうとする」（樋口謙一郎・国分舞、訳）

SELF-CONTROL

　　'Continentals are unable to be butlers because they are as a breed incapable of the emotional restraint which only the English race are capable of. Continentals – and by and large the Celts, . . . – are as a rule unable to control themselves in moments of strong emotion, . . . .'
　　Upon reading the above phrase, an excerpt from "The Remains of the Day" written by Kazuo Ishiguro, I thought English and Japanese races are similar in character. The Japanese also value the emotional restraint. Their self-control is well described in Chapter 11 of "Bushido " ("The Soul of Japan") as follows:
　　'Calmness of behavior, composure of mind, should not be disturbed by passion of any kind.'
　　'When a man or woman feels his or her soul stirred, the first instinct is quietly to suppress the manifestation of it.'

死人のようにじっとしている

 

　先日テレビで面白い番組を見た。

あなたが電車で座っているとき、目の前に赤ん坊を抱いた母親が立ったとする。あなたは「どうぞ」と言って席を譲ろうとする。彼女は「いえ結構です」と断る。そんな場合、せっかくの親切を断るとは失礼だと思うかもしれない。断る理由は、座ると赤ん坊は往々にして泣きだすのだ。そのことを母親は知っているのだ。
　では、赤ん坊はなぜ泣きだすのか。赤ん坊は母親に抱っこされている方が、すなわち、母親に運ばれている時の方が習性的にじっとしている。なぜか。パンダでもサルでも、哺乳類動物の母親が赤ん坊をくわえて場所を移動するとき、赤ん坊は本能的にじっとしていなければ、母親が運びづらくなることを知っているのだ。場所を移動しなければならないのは緊急事態だ。緊急事態に対処するため、赤ん坊は死んだようにじっとしているわけだ。
　なるほど、断られても不愉快に思ってはいけない。

AS QUIET AS DEAD MICE

　　I watched an interesting TV program the other day.
　　Suppose you are sitting in a train and a woman holding her baby stands in front of you. You say to her, “Please sit down,” to offer her your seat, but she refuses. You might think she is ungrateful. Why does she refuse? Because her baby tends to cry when she sits down. And she knows about it.
　　Then, why does the baby begin to cry? Babies intuitively keep quiet while they are being carried. When mothers of mammal species, such as pandas and monkeys, move to a different place carrying their babies in their mouths, they keep quiet because they know their mothers will have difficulty if they are restless. Mammal mothers move in an emergency. Babies must be as quiet as dead mice so that their mothers can carry them smoothly.
　　So, don’t get annoyed.

岐阜市文芸祭賞受賞 GIFU CITY LITERATURE PRIZE

岐阜市文芸祭賞受賞

 

昨日、岐阜市文芸祭短編小説部門で文芸祭賞を受賞した。
失敗談。
時間を一時間間違えて、会場に着いた時には授賞式は終わっていた。講評会と授賞式の時間を間違えたのだ。受付の人から賞状と入選作品集をもらったが賞品はなかった。ただ、講評会は良かった。
取らぬ狸の皮算用であった。

GIFU CITY LITERATURE PRIZE

I won the first prize in the Gifu City Literature Festival, Short Story Section.
Unfortunately, I was late for the award ceremony. I made a mistake. The ceremony began at p.m. 1:00 and the judges' comments meeting began at p.m. 2:00. I arrived in time for the latter. A woman in charge gave me the award certificate and the booklet that contained the prize winners' works. Alas, they gave me no prize.
I shouldn't have counted my chickens before they hatched.
The judges comments were good, though.
 

服部百音リサイタル MONE HATTORI'S VIOLIN RECITAL

　昨日、服部百音さんのバイオリン演奏を女房と一緒に白鳥ホールで聴いた。百音さんは１８歳で、作曲家服部良一の孫娘である。演奏曲目は以下の通り。

エルンスト：夏の名残のばら
プロコフィエフ：ヴァイオリンソナタ第一番ヘ短調作品８０
エルンスト：魔王による大奇想曲
ショーソン：詩曲
マスネ：タイスの瞑想曲
ジンバリスト：R・コルサコフの金鶏の主題による演奏会用幻想曲
ラヴェル：ツイガーヌ

　この中で知っていたのは「夏の名残のばら」「タイスの瞑想曲」ぐらいで、後は初めて聞く曲で、いずれも固い難しい曲ばかりであった。
百音さんの演奏はバイオリンと格闘していると言ってもいい。音が激しく鳴り響き、バイオリンが壊れるかと思うぐらい激しく演奏する。あの細い腕のどこからあのような力強い音が出るか。かと思えば、バイオリンから鈴の音、水の流れる音、小鳥の鳴き声、横笛のような優しい音を出す。まるで魔術師のようにヴァイオリンでありとあらゆる音を出す。超絶技巧演奏というが、百音さんのは、超・超絶技巧であった。
　興奮して夜はよく眠れなかった。

MONE HATTORI'S VIOLIN RECITAL

 

I went to Shirakawa Hall with my wife to listen to Mone Hattori’s violin recital. She is 18 years old and a famous composer, Ryoichi Hattori’s granddaughter. She performed the following numbers.

Ernst: The Last Rose of Summer
Prokofiev: Violin Sonata No.1 minor, Op. 80
Ernst: Grand Caprice on Schuber’s ‘Der Erlkonig’
Chausson: Poeme
Massenet: ‘Meditation’ from Thais
Zimbalist：Concert Fantasy on Themes from R. Korsakov’s Opera “Le Coqd’Or”
Ravel: Tzigane

　　I was familiar with two out of them: The Last Rose of Summer and Meditation’ from Thais. The others were new and were too difficult to appreciate.
　　She played the violin as if she were fighting with the instrument. That was a fierce battle between the violin and her body. She played it so violently that I felt like it would break. How can such a thin arm produce such a tremendously thunderous sound? One the other hand, however, she produced serene sounds like those of bells, brooks, little birds, and bamboo whistles. She was a magician who could produce any sound out of the violin. Her performance was so skillful that she seemed like a super-human.
　　I was so excited that I couldn’t sleep well last night.


 

ピアノ２台１０手演奏 10-HANDED PIANO PERFORMANCE

　　I went to Munetsugu Hall to listen to a 10-handed piano performance. That is, five pianists played two pianos simultaneously. In other words, two pianists played one piano and three played the other.
　　The pianists were Ryoji Ariyoshi, Kyoko Ikemura, Takaya Sano, Ayano Shimada, and Haruka Miyazaki. They played several pieces of music, including "Petite Suite" composed by Debussy and "Tableaux d’une exposition" by Mussorgsky.
　　Since ten hands played the piano, the sound was gorgeous, strong, impressive, moving with high and low-pitched tones. It vibrated the whole concert hall. The most wonderful music they played was Emmanuel Chabrier "Espana Rhapsody for Two Piano."

ピーターラビット展 PETER RABBIT EXHIBITION

　

　I went to Nagoya City Museum to see Peter Rabbit Exhibition. There were more than 100 pictures painted by Beatrix Potter. She wrote a lot of tales, featuring animals and landscapes inspired by her home in the Lake District in England.
　　What made Peter Rabbit Tales famous all over the world is, I think, not the tales but the beautiful illustrations she draw. Her tales were good, but her illustrations were surprisingly well painted. Everyone, from children to adults, will surely enjoy her pictures. Without the pictures, Peter Rabbit Tales wouldn’t be so well-known.

錦秋名古屋顔見世 GOING TO SEE KABUKI

　１０月１８日（水）金山市民会館で歌舞伎を見てきた。出し物は「恋女房染分け手綱（こいにょうぼうそめわけたづな）」「番町皿屋敷」「蜘蛛絲梓弦（くものいとあずさのゆみはり）」であった。「恋女房染分け手綱」の浄瑠璃の語りは竹本谷太夫で、彼は私の教え子である。谷太夫は押しも押されぬ義太夫語り手で、義太夫が天井桟敷までよく届き、乳人(めのと)重の井が我が子の馬子を抱きしめたいが、殿中で人目もあり、立場上それができない。その心の葛藤を、谷太夫は感情豊かに語ってくれた。隣の御婦人が涙を拭いていた。
　歌舞伎が終わってから、谷太夫さんと歓談したが、日本の伝統文化を後輩まで末永く伝えてほしいとお願いした。
　ところで、今日の歌舞伎は１１時開演で、終了が３時ごろ。休憩時間があるとはいえ、合計４時間もあった。７４歳の私には４時間椅子に座っての歌舞伎鑑賞は身体がえらい。芸術鑑賞（美術、音楽、舞台）は体力だと思った。
