　乙姫様の舞い踊り

昨年の４月に西安に行き、兵馬俑を見学しましたが、その折、中国の美しい舞踊を見ることができました。その踊りはまるで龍宮城で浦島太郎が見た乙姫様や[鯛や鮃の舞い踊り]のようでした。また西安に行く機会があれば、是非もう一度見たい。

乙姫様のごちそうに
鯛やひらめの舞踊り
ただ珍しく面白く
月日のたつのも夢のうち

遊びにあきて気がついて

帰る途中の楽しみは
みやげにもらった玉手箱

帰って見れば　こはいかに
元居た家も村も無く
みちに行きあう人々は
顔も知らない者ばかり

I went to Xian to see the Terracotta Warriors of Emperor Qin Shihuang last April. At that time I had a chance to see beautiful dances by Chinese dancing girls. They were like Otohime (Princess of the Ryugu Dragon Palace in a Japanese folktale). I would like to go to Xian to see the dance again. (See the video at the top)

若い頃、マサチューセッツ工科大学のウオルター・レウイン教授の物理の授業を受けていれば、物理は好きな科目になっていたと思います。
　彼の授業は人気があり、最近NHKテレビでシリーズものとして放映されています（毎週土曜日４時～５時「MIT白熱教室」）。これまでに、私は引力に関する講義２回分を見ました。
　彼の授業は理論と実験で成り立っています。先週見たのは、飛行機の中でボールを垂直に投げた場合、どのようにしてボールがまた元の手に落ちてくるかの実験でした。
　子供の頃、兄と電車に乗っていて、私がボールを何度垂直に放り投げても、電車が走っているのに、ちゃんと手に戻ってくるのを、二人で不思議に思いました。高校の物理の授業で、ボールは電車と同じ速度で移動しているということを習いました。しかし、理論は分かっても、実際目で見ていないから真には理解していませんでした。
　先週、レーウイン教授がこの実験をやったのです。まず教授は万有引力の法則、落下する物体の速度、エネルギー保存の法則の理論を教え、次に、今から飛行機に乗っている乗客がボールを垂直に投げて元の手の位置に戻るところをお見せしようと言いました。
　まず、屋根にじょうごが取り付けてある、おもちゃの車（飛行機のつもり）を見せ、ゴルフボール大のボールをじょうごに入れました。それから車を発進させました。車が動き始めるとじょうごから勢い良くボールが飛び上がり、前進する車の上で綺麗な放物線を描いて車と同じスピードで飛び、落下して最後にじょうごの中に落ちました。学生は拍手喝采しました。
　何と言う素晴らしい実験！　今は亡き兄にも実験を見せたいと思いました。

     A FALLING BALL IN A TRAIN

　I would be fond of physics if I had attended the physics classes by Prof. Walter Lewin of Massachusetts Institute of Technology when I was young. His classes were so popular that they have recently been broadcasted on NHK television (Saturday 4:00-5:00 p.m. MIT　Hakunetsu Kyoshitsu). I have so far watched two of his classes on gravity.

  　　His class consists of a theory and its experiment. Last week I watched his experiment in which he demonstrated how a ball which you throw vertically in an airplane falls exactly back into your hand.
  　 When I was a child, I was riding a train with my brother. I had a ball in my hand and repeatedly threw it vertically. Whenever I threw it, it fell on my hand. My brother and I wondered why it fell in my hand even if the train was running fast. Later, in high school I studied in the physics class that the ball is moving at the same speed as the train moves. I thought I understood the theory, but only superficially.
  　　Last week, I watched a very interesting program in which Prof. Lewin first taught his students the law of gravity, the speed of falling objects, and energy conservation law. I understood most of his explanation. Then, he said he would demonstrate how a ball which a passenger in a plane throws vertically into the air falls down in his hand.  
　　He first showed a toy car (supposedly a plane) with a funnel on top. He then put a golf-size ball in the funnel. And finally the car moved. In the course of the movement, the ball was shot up. It drew a beautiful parabola over the on-going train and successfully fell into the funnel. The students gave a big applause.
  　 I was amazed at his experiment. I would have liked my late brother to watch the experiment.

ハリウッド フェスティバル オーケストラ HOLLYWOOD FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA

　1月13日、愛知県芸術劇場大ホールで開催された２０１３　ハリウッド・フェスティバル・オーケストラ　ニューイヤー・コンサートを聴きに行った。演奏曲目は多彩で、「風と共に去りぬ」「サウンドオブミュージック」「スパイダーマン」「アラビアのローレンス」「マイフェアレイディー」「インディジョーンズレイダーズ」「スパイ大作戦」「スーパーマン」「スターウォーズ」「ハリーポッター」「タイタニック」「クワイガーマーチ」「ジェームズボンドテーマ曲」等であった。
この他にビリー・キングが「慕情」と「スタンド・バイ・ミー」を歌った。
　映画音楽を聴いていると、次々と映画の場面が思い出され、映画を見た若い頃を思い出した。「スパイ大作戦」を聞いていて、チームの5人の面々を思い出した。リーダー、黒人電気技師、大柄な男、変装の名人、美貌の女性達だ。
　オーケストラが「風と共に去りぬ」を演奏しているときに、舞台背面にスチール写真やビビアン・リーの写真を数十枚投影してくれた。「マイフェアレディ」の演奏の時は、同様にオードリー・ヘップバーンの映画場面を映し出した。二つの曲を聴きながら写真を見ていると、リーとヘップバーンの声が聞こえてくるようだった。
　映画音楽は魔法の力があり、50年前の若い私に戻してくれた。思い出の曲を沢山聴けてよかった。ハリウッド映画と映画音楽は私の心の拠り所となっている。スクリーンミュージックよ、ありがとう。

HOLLYWOOD FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA

　　I went to the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater to listen to the New Year Concert by the Hollywood Festival Orchestra on January 13. The Orchestra played famous film music such as Gone with the Wind, the Sound of Music, Spiderman, Lawrence of Arabia, My Fair Lady, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Mission Impossible, Superman, Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Titanic, the Bridge over the River Kwai, and James Bond Theme.
　　In addition to the music, Billy King sang songs including Love Is a Many Splendored Thing and Stand by Me.
While I was listening to the music, I remembered the scenes of each movie, and the days when I saw it came back to me. Take Mission Impossible for example, I hadn’t listened to it for about 40 years, but I remembered the faces of the team members: the leader, the black young man, the huge strong man, and the man specialized in disguise, and the pretty woman.
　　While the orchestra played Gone with the Wind, they projected the photographs of the pretty heroin, Vivien Leigh, on the stage back screen. Audrey Hepburn’s pictures were also projected during the performance of My Fair Lady. While I was listening to the two pieces of music, watching their photographs, I even heard their voices.
　　The music had a magical power. It brought me to the days of 50 years ago when I was young. I was glad to listen to the music. Hollywood movies and their accompanying music have somehow contributed to what I am now.
