HOW FOOLISH!
You read an April Fool’s story in my English lesson last week. That is probably a fiction*, but this is a true story.
Do you know Big Ben? It is a clock tower in London. It is about 96 meters high. They made it in 1858. The minute* hand is 4.2 meters long, and the hour* hand is 2.7 meters long. Each clock face* is seven meters in diameter*.
On April 1, 1980, the British Broadcasting Corporation Japanese Service said, “Big Ben is going to become a digital* clock to keep up with the times*. So, it will not need the clock hands. They will sell the hands to the first four listeners*. Do you want the hands? Then, please write to us.”
About 2,000 Japanese listeners answered the BBC. One of them was a seaman*. He was sailing* in the Atlantic Ocean*, but radioed* to the BBC at once.
Did anyone get the clock hands? No. The BBC was playing a trick on them. How foolish the listeners were! And how humorous* the BBC was!
Later, the BBC sent a picture postcard* of Big Ben to the April Fools.
なんたるお馬鹿さん先週、諸君は英語の授業で「4月馬鹿」の話を読みました。あれはフィクションでしょうが、以下の話は実話です。
ビッグベンを知ってますか。ロンドンにある時計塔です。高さが約96メートルで、1858年にできました。長針は4.2メートル、短針は2.7メートルで、文字盤は直径7メートルあります。
1980年4月1日、英国放送協会 (BBC) の日本語放送でニュースが流れました。「ビッグベンは時代の流れに乗り遅れないようデジタル化されます。時計の針は不要となりますので、先着4名の聴取者の方に販売されます。ご希望の方は連絡して下さい」
約2000人の日本人がBBCに返事を出しました。そのうち一人は大西洋航海中の船員で、すぐBBCに無線を入れました。
時計の針を手に入れた人がいたかって？ いいえ。 BBCは聴取者にいっぱい食わせたのです。なんという馬鹿な聴取者! なんというBBCのユーモア!
その後、BBCはビッグベンの絵葉書を4月馬鹿の皆様に送りました。

WAS IT A MISTAKE*?
Do you know Sammy Sosa? He is a very popular* Chicago Cubs home run king. He has 505 home run hits.
On June 2, Sosa hit a ground ball to second base. Then his bat shattered* in half. The home base umpire* saw some cork* in his bat. He ejected* Sosa there and then*.
A corked bat is light*. You can hit a ball very far and high. Baseball players must not use a corked bat in a game.
“It was a mistake,” said Sosa. “I feel* sorry. I use a corked bat for batting practice. I want to please* my fans.”
Major League Baseball X-rayed* all his 76 bats. They found no cork in them.
Some say, “We believe* him. It was an honest mistake*. His suspension* must be two or three games.” Some say, “It was not a mistake. He knew it. Punish* the cheater*. Suspend him for ten or more games.”

うっかりミス？
サミー・ソーサーを知ってるかい。今までに５０５本の本塁打を打ってるシカゴカブスのホームラン王だ。 ６月２日、ソーサーは２塁にゴロを打ったとき、バットが二つに割れたんだ。中にコルクがつめてあって、審判の目に留まってね、ソーサーは即刻退場さ。 コルク入りのバットは軽くて、ボールを高く遠くまで飛ばせるんだ。だから試合で使うのは禁止なんだよ。
「すみません、バットを間違えました。コルク入りのバットはフアンを喜ばすためで、練習用に使ってるんです」とソーサー。 メジャーリーグは、ソーサーの７６本のバット全部をレントゲンにかけたんだ。でもコルクは見つからなかった。
「ソーサーの言ってることを信ずるね。うっかりミスだよ。試合出場停止は２、３試合がいい」という人もいれば、「バットを間違えたんじゃあないよ。わざとやったんだ。あのインチキ野郎は罰するべきだ。１０試合以上は出場停止だ」という人もいる。

“SPIRITED AWAY*”
“Spirited Away” (Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi) got an Academy Award on March 23.
The Japanese enjoy the film, but probably* many Americans do not. Why? Because it is full of Japanese things*.
The film* shows* a great many* Japanese gods. Many Americans are Christians. They believe in* one god, Jesus Christ. But there are 8,000,000 gods in Japan. They may say, “How can you believe in so many gods?”
“Spirited Away” shows a big bathhouse*, too. Americans do not have a bathhouse. They have a bath* at home.
It shows a dragon, too. Dragons are familiar to* you. You may be a Chunichi Dragons fan. 2000 was the Year of Dragon. Urashima went to Dragon Palace. But dragons are not familiar to Americans.
In this way*, Americans see many strange* things in the film, but they gave* it the award. Mr. Hayao Miyazaki did a wonderful job*.
千と千尋の神隠し
｢千と千尋の神隠し｣が３月２３日、アカデミー賞を受賞しました。
日本人には面白い映画ですが、アメリカ人にはそうはいかないでしょう。映画が日本的だからです。
映画には八百万（やおよろず）の神が出てきます。アメリカ人はクリスチャンが多く、イエス・キリストを信じる一神教です。ところが、日本には八百万も神がいます。アメリカ人は「どうやってそんなに多くの神が信じられるのか」と尋ねるでしょう。
また、映画に大きな風呂屋も出てきます。アメリカには風呂屋はありません、家に風呂があるからです。
竜もこの映画に登場します。竜にはなじみがあるでしょう。君は中日ドラゴンズフアンかもしれませんね。２０００年は辰年でしたし、浦島太郎は竜宮城に行きました。でも、竜はアメリカ人にはなじみがありません。
このように、｢千と千尋の神隠し｣はアメリカ人には奇妙な映画なのですが、アカデミー賞を受賞しました。宮崎駿氏はすばらしい作品を作ったのです。

I DON’T LIKE VALENTINE DAY
I am not happy in February. My little brother gets a lot of chocolate on Valentine Day, but I do not get* any.
I passed Nanzan High School entrance* test on February 11 last year. I was very happy. But I was not happy on February 14. This day, I was at home. Then, the interphone* rang*. I opened the front* door. A girl was standing there. She had some chocolate for my brother.
My brother said, “I don’t want a bad tooth*. Do you want any chocolate? I can give you some.” I was very angry*.
I came back home from school early*. I opened the mailbox*. There were six boxes of chocolate and five love letters for my brother! I got none*!
My brother is not very handsome*. He is not very smart*. Why does he get so much chocolate?
I don’t like Valentine Day. I don’t like the refrigerator* in my house. It has his chocolate. Who created* damn* Valentine Day? (J1E Takeshi Ikeda)
忌々しいバレンタインデー
２月は憂うつだ。弟はバレンタインデーにいっぱいチョコレートをもらうけど、僕はゼロだ。
去年の２月１１日、南山の入学試験に合格して有頂天だったのに１４日にはどん底。１４日、家にいたら、インターホンが鳴って、玄関を開けたら、女の子が立っていた。弟に渡すチョコを持って。
弟は「虫歯になるのいやだなぁ。兄ちゃんチョコ欲しい？ あげてもいいよ」と言いやがる。全く頭にくる。
学校から早く帰宅して、郵便受を開けたら、弟宛のチョコが６個とラブレターが５通入っていた！ 僕はゼロ！
弟は特にハンサムでもなし、頭も抜群ではないのに、なぜチョコレートをあんなにいっぱいもらうんだ。 バレンタインデーが忌々しい。冷蔵庫も恨めしい。中に弟のチョコが入っている。一体どこのどいつがバレンダインデーなんか決めたんだ。 (中１Ｅ 池田武史) _________________________________________

MUST WE EXPLORE SPACE?
The space shuttle Columbia broke up* and killed seven astronauts on February 1.
Mr. Stop: I am very sad*. We must stop the space shuttle program.
Mr. Go: I am sad, too, but we must not stop it. We must explore* space.
Mr. Stop: But seven astronauts died.
Mr. Go: I know, but we must explore space.
Mr. Stop: We need not send* astronauts into space. We can use cameras, robots, and computers. Mr. Go: Machines* can not do the job well.
Mr. Stop: We need too much money. One shuttle is $2.1 billion*. One shuttle launch* is $500 million*. We can use the money for poor* people*.
Mr. Go: I know, but we must explore space.
Mr. Stop: The space shuttles are too old. They are 20 years old.
Mr. Go: I know, but we must explore space.
Mr. Stop: You say that again? Aren’t you foolish*?
Mr. Go: I may be foolish, but we must explore space.
留雄：痛ましいことだ。スペースシャトル計画は止めなきゃいかん。
行雄：痛ましいが、シャトル計画を中止すべきではない。宇宙は探検すべきなんだよ。
留雄：だって、宇宙飛行士が７人も死んだんだぜ。
行雄：そりゃ分かっているよ。しかし宇宙は探検すべきなんだ。
留雄：宇宙飛行士が宇宙に出て行く必要なんかないんだ。カメラやロボットやコンピューターがあるじやないか。
行雄：機械ではだめだ。
留雄：お金だって無茶かかるよ。シャトル一基２１億ドル（２５２０億円）で、打上げ一回、５億ドル（だよ。貧しい人に回せばいいんだよ。
行雄：そりゃ分かっているよ。しかし宇宙は探検すべきなんだ。
留雄：スペースシャトルは２０年もののオンボロで、目茶危ないよ。
行雄：そりゃ分かっているよ。しかし宇宙は探検すべきなんだよ。
留雄：くどいね。お前、アホとちゃうか。
行雄：アホかもしれないが、宇宙は探検すべきなんだ。

DID YOU ENJOY PEACH-BOY
Hanako: Did you read Peach-boy?
Jiro: Yes, I did. It was interesting. I like Peach-boy. He was kind and strong. He punished the devils. He is a Japanese hero. Did you enjoy it, too?
Hanako: No, I didn’t. I have some questions about the story.
Jiro: Well, what are they?
Hanako: First, why is his name Peach-boy? He went to Onigashima and punished the devils. He was not a boy then. He was a man. Next, the old woman cut the peach, but she did not cut Peach-boy. How did she cut it? Thirdly, the devils were too weak. They gave up too soon. They did not fight with the boy and his friends. Moreover, the devils gave him many bags of gold, but Peach-boy did not give them back to the villagers. Weren’t the gold villagers’? One more thing. Were the gold useful for the dog, the monkey, and the pheasant?
Jiro: OK. OK. OK. OK. I understand.
桃太郎は面白かった？
次郎：読んだよ。面白かった。桃太郎は気に入ったよ。親切で力持ちだし、鬼を退治するし。日本のヒ
花子：ちっとも面白くなかったわ。話でどうも分からないところがあるの。
次郎：えっ、何それ？
花子：第１ね、どうして名前がPeach-boy（桃少年）なの？鬼が島に行って鬼を退治したときは大人だったのに。次に、おばあさんは桃を切ったとき、桃太郎を切らなかったけど、そんなことどうやってできるの？ それから桃太郎は暴力をつかったわね。暴力はいけないわ。なぜ鬼とまず話し合わなかったの？鬼はなぜあんなに弱いの？戦わずにすぐ降参してしまって。それに鬼は桃太郎に金の袋を差し出すけれど、なぜ桃太郎は金を村人に返さなかったの？もともと村人の金でしょ。さらにね……
次郎:分かった、分かった、分かったよ。

Koji: Don’t you know him?
Sally: No, I don’t.
Koji: He is Koichi Tanaka.
Sally: What is he?
Koji: He is an engineer. He won the 2002 Nobel chemistry prize.
Sally: Oh, that’s wonderful. What did he study?
Koji: He studied proteins. His work is helping a lot of sick people.
Sally: That’s nice. When did he win the prize?
Koji: On December 10. He gave a speech at Stockholm University on December 8.
Sally: Did he give his speech in English or in Japanese?
Koji: In English. He practiced it 20 times.
Sally: 20 times?
Koji: Yes. After his speech, he said, “I don’t want to speak English any more.”
Sally: Oh, I see.
英語はもう話したくない
サリー： この人だーれ？
浩二： 知らない？
サリー： ええ
浩二： 田中耕一さんだよ。
サリー： どういう人？
浩二： エンジニアで、今年のノーベル化学賞受賞者だよ
サリー： えっ、それはすごいわ。何の研究をされたの？
浩二： 蛋白質だよ。おかげでたくさんの病人が助かっているんだ。
サリー： それはいいことね。いつ受賞されたの？
浩二： １２月１０日だよ。８日にはストックホルム大学でスピーチをされたよ
サリー： 英語で？それとも日本語で？
浩二： 英語で。それも２０回は練習されたんだって。
サリー： ２０回？
浩二： そう。スピーチのあとで、「もう英語は話したくない」と言われたんだよ

Mary: I enjoyed the chorus contest last Saturday.
Hiroshi: I enjoyed it, too.
Mary: I liked the Santa Clause. He was a wonderful conductor.
Hiroshi: Yes, he was.
Mary: JIE song, Aremo Hoshii was good. It was rhythmical and strong.
Hiroshi: Yes, it was. J3A students sang very well, too. Their songs were beautiful and harmonious.
Mary: That’s right.
Hiroshi: I enjoyed our teachers’ song, too.
Mary: Me, too. They are great singers. I sang We Are the World with them, too. You have nice teachers. You are lucky.
Hiroshi: Thank you.

メ：あのサンタ気に入ったわ。指揮も上手だったし

ひ：先生の歌がまた良かった。
メ：ええ。先生方みんなとても上手で、わたし「ウィー・アー・ザ・ワールド」を一緒に歌ったわ。いい先生方で、ひろし、ラッキーね。

Hiroshi: Nanzan High School is going to have a chorus* contest*. Please
come and listen to our songs*.
Mary: All right. When is the contest going to start*?
Hiroshi: It’s going to start at 9:20 in the morning. We are going to sing* at the school auditorium*.
Mary: What song are you going to sing?
Hiroshi: We are going to sing Let’s Search* for Tomorrow. Do you know* this song?
Mary: Yes, I do. I like it. Please do your best*.
Hiroshi: All right. Thank you.

Godzilla Goes to America
(Taro and Mary are watching the Giants parade on TV.)
Mary: Who is that baseball player?
Taro: He is Hideki Matsui. He is a Giants baseball player.
Mary: How old is he?
Taro: He is 28 years old.
Mary: Is he a good baseball player?
Taro: Yes, he is. He is a Japanese base
ball superstar. He is the 2002 Central League MVP winner*. He hit* 50 home runs this season.
Mary: Oh, I see. I know* him. Is his nickname Godzilla?
Taro: Yes, it is. His nickname is Godzilla. I am his big fan, but he is not going to play in Japan next season* He is going to leave* the Giants.
Mary: Oh. Where is he going to play next season?
Taro: He is going to play in the United States*. He is going to be a major league player. Probably* he is going to play for the New York Yankees.
Mary: Oh, I see.
