             もっと名古屋に街路樹を

　先日北京に行ってその景観に驚きました。どこまで車を走らせても高層ビルが林立し１００メートル級の道路が縦横に走っているのです。
　感心したのは道路沿いにある樹木です。樹木が林のように植えられており、道路はその中を走っているのです。桜や梅の満開シーズンで、桃色や赤い花が咲き誇り、車の窓から見る花の景色に見とれました。観光ガイドに、黄砂はないのかと聞きましたところ、オリンピックのために木を植え、今では黄砂は北京に飛んで来なくなったと言っていました。
　名古屋に帰って貧弱な道路とひょろひょろの、まばらな街路樹に、これが道路を誇りにしている名古屋かと思いがっかりしました。「白い街」と言われないよう、もっと街路樹を植え、景観をよくできないものでしょうか。名古屋の道路は素晴らしいと言われますが、北京の道路に比べると話になりません。不景気なことは分かりますが予算を捻出して樹木の茂った「緑の街」にならないかと願っています。

　　I was amazed at the scenery of Beijing when I visited it last week. No matter how far you may drive in the city, you will see tremendous number of skyscrapers and 100 meter level wide roads running in every direction.
　　What surprised me most were the thick tall trees along the roads. They were planted so densely that you might think that they were like woods. I was lucky enough to see out of the window of the tourist guide car a lot of blossoms of cherry trees and apricots in full bloom. I asked the guide, “Isn’t the yellow sand from Chinese deserts blown into Beijing?” He answered, “No, since the city planted trees in and around the city for the Olympic Games, yellow sand changed its course and we have only little of it.”
　　When I returned to Nagoya and saw the trees along the road, I was dismayed. How scarce and skinny they were! I couldn’t believe the scenery because I had been proud of the wide roads of Nagoya. Can’t the city authorities plant more trees in Nagoya so that it may not be called White City? The roads in Nagoya are said to be wonderful, but no way. They are far inferior to the ones in Beijing.
　　I know the city’s economy is in recession, but can’t they spare some budget for planting trees so that Nagoya will be called Green City?

北京と西安旅行 VISITING BEIJING AND XIAN

　4月1４日から18日まで北京と西安へ家内と行ってきました。万里の長城や兵馬俑を見たいという夢がやっとかないました。
北京から車で一時間走ると、起伏の多い山の嶺に沿って長々と曲がりくねった巨大な壁が勇姿を現します。
　壁の上には幅5メートルの通路が作られていて、一部が急斜面になっています。そういうところは通路の両脇に作ってある鉄パイプをつかまないと、とても登れません。壁が意外と新しかったのは、壊れかかったレンガを新しいものと取り替えているからでしょう。実際、レンガを背に載せて山路を、よろっ、よろっと、下っていくロバを何頭か見ました。

　長城入口近くのレンガは、ほとんど落書きだらけ。世界中からの見物客が記念にと自分の名前と日付をレンガに刻むからです。名前を永遠に刻んでおきたいのでしょう。でも、遅かれ早かれレンガは新しいのに取り替えられるし摩耗してしまいます。

 　兵馬俑にはがっかりしました。テレビを見たり本を読んだりして兵馬俑のことはよく知っていました。やれ、兵俑は身長が2メートルとか、顔も髪型も全部違っているとか、元は色鮮やかだったとか。でも、私が一番期待していたのは間近で兵俑を見ることでした。
 　でも、見学コースは兵俑群が立っている地面から5メートルも高いところに作られていて、兵俑を近くで見ることができませんでした。だから、テレビで見る大写しの兵俑の映像のような迫力がありません。だいたい、高いところから兵俑群を見下ろすことになるから、実際の兵俑より小さく見えてしまいます。西安市は見学コースを兵俑群が立っている地面と同じ高さにした方がいいと思います。
 　展示室に行きますとクリントン元大統領夫妻が兵俑のすぐそばに立っている写真がありました。お二人は兵俑群が立っている地面まで降りることを許されたのでしょう。兵俑にキスできるぐらい近くから兵俑を見ることができて、さぞ満足だったでしょう。

I visited Beijing and Xian from April 14 to 18 with my wife. My dream to visit the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors and Horses was at last realized. After an hour’s drive from Beijing, we arrived at the Great Wall. I saw a winding long and huge wall standing on a craggy mountain range.
It was a hard work for me to walk up the slope of the 5-meter-wide wall path because some parts of the path were so steep that you could not walk without gripping the iron pipe equipped at either side of the path. The wall was unexpectedly new, probably because the decayed bricks had been constantly renovated.
Actually I saw donkeys waddling down a mountain path with bricks on their backs.

Most of the wall bricks near the entrance were deluged with graffiti. Innumerous tourists from all over the world carved the dates of their visits and names on the bricks. They wanted their names remain eternally on the Great Wall, but sorry to say, the bricks will be replaced with new ones or will be worn out sooner or later.

The Terracotta Army was disappointing. Since I had often watched the army on TV, I had known a lot about the soldiers: their two-meter height, different faces and hair style, and original colors. What I had been very much looking forward to was to see them up close with my own eyes.
 　　However, since the observatory path was built about five meters above the ground level on which they stood, I could not look closely at them. The soldiers I watched on TV were more impressive than the ones I saw from five meters away in the pit.
Moreover, I had to look down on them from high above, and so they looked much smaller than the real size.　The Xian government should build the observatory path at the ground level on which the terracotta soldiers stand.
In the exhibition room, there was a photograph of the former President Clinton and his wife standing next to the terracotta solders. They were allowed to stand on the ground level. They looked amused standing within the kissing distance from them.
