　アメリカの昔のテレビ・ドラマ「空想科学劇場」をユー・チューブで見た。１９５６年頃、日本で字幕付きで放送されたものだ。当時、私は中学生で毎週欠かさず見ていた。

　昨日５０年ぶりに、ドラマの初めに流れるテーマミュージックを聞いた。なんと懐かしいメロディーよ。少年時代に戻ったような気持ちになった。当時、まさか５０年後にまた「空想科学劇場」を見るなんて夢にも思わなかった。これこそが「空想科学劇場」だ。

　人生長年生きていると、思わぬ楽しい驚きがある。

今日、通信衛星のおかげで、東京とロンドン間でテレビ画像を送ることができる。しかし、約６０年前、空想科学劇場が放送されていた当時には、人工衛星というものがなかった。
　昨日見た「空想科学劇場」では、科学者が月を画像を反射する物体として使っていた。月が人工衛星なのだ。驚くべき発想だ。
日本とアメリカ間で最初に通信衛星で画像が送られたのは、なんとケネディの暗殺場面であった。ショッキングな画像であった。

SCIENCE FICTION THEATER

 

I watched an episode of the old American TV series “Science Fiction Theater” on You-Tube yesterday. The series was broadcast in Japan with Japanese subtitles around 1956. AT that time, I was a junior high school boy. I enjoyed them every week.
　　Yesterday after more than 50 years of absence, I heard the theme music for SFT. I felt nostalgic. I felt as if I had gone back to my boyhood. Little did I dream that I would watch them more than half a century later. I was really back in a "science fiction theater."
　　To live a long life sometimes rewards me with pleasant surprises.

Today communication satellites transmit live television images between, say, Tokyo and London, but about 60 years ago when SFT was broadcast, there was no such thing like satellites.
　The scientists in the SFT episode I watched yesterday used the moon as an object to reflect television images. The moon was a “satellite.” What an astonishing idea!
　　I remember the first trans-pacific satellite communication between Japan and the US, which sent images of J. F. Kennedy’s assassination. It was a shocking image.
