　石田師範ご逝去

 

 最近こんなショックを受けたことがない。古武道杖道の石田師範が亡くなられた。享年６８であった。
　私は４８歳から師範の下で今日７４歳まで杖道を稽古してきた。最近は御病気（がん）のため、道場には御姿を現されなかったが、稽古をするたびに杖の持ち方、腰の使い方などいろいろ質問が出て、病院に行って質問しようと思っていた矢先であった。
　この２６年間、私は何を習っていたのだろう。もっとしっかり稽古をして、もっとしっかり訊くべきことを訊いておくべきであった。返す返すも残念でならない。
　石田先生のご冥福を祈るばかりだ。

MASTER ISHIDA PASSED AWAY

I have never been as shocked as this. Master Ishida of the Japanese martial arts of Jo passed away at the age of 68.

I started to learn Jo from him at the age of 48. I am 74 years old. So, I have been practicing Jo for 26 years. During the past few years he rarely came to the practice hall because he was suffering from prostate cancer. The more I practiced Jo, the more questions I had. Actually speaking, just a few days ago, I was thinking of visiting his hospital and ask him such basic questions like how to hold the jo stick; how to move your hips; and how to bend your legs.

   I do not know what I have been learning. I should have learned much more from him. I should have asked many more questions of him, but no more. I am sorry about that.

   May Master Ishida rest in peace.

備えあれば憂いなし BE PREPARED AND HAVE NO REGRET

Be Prepared and Have No Regrets

　　I was walking along a freezing cold road at about one o’clock in February. I was heading for a convenience store to buy A4 size paper.
　　About 15 minutes before that, I had been printing my short story. I had to print more than 250 pages, but unfortunately the paper had run out after about 50 pages. I had to hand in my printed short story at 10 o’clock the next morning.
　　I wore my overcoat and went out of my house in the snow. After a 15 minute walk, I reached the convenience store. Luckily they sold a pack of A4 size paper, but it contained only 100 sheets. I asked the shop owner to sell the paper in the copying machine installed in the shop, but he refused. So I had to walk to another convenience store 20 minutes away. It was around 1:30 at night. I walked step by step holding my umbrella tightly.
　　Consequently, I bought two packs of A4 paper and came back home about two o’clock in the morning. Then I began to print my short story. It took another hour to print all the pages.
　　I learned the real meaning of “Be prepared and have no regrets.”

　今日、女房と津島の藤まつりに行ってきた。藤の花が満開で、ほのかな香りと共に藤を満喫した。ゴールデンウイーク初日だけあって、藤見客で満員であった。露店も人で大いににぎわい、藤を見に行ったのか、人を見に行ったのか分からなかった。
　驚いたのはヴェトナム人の若い男女が大勢いて、あちこちでヴェトナム語が飛び交い、藤棚の下ではヴェトナム人とすれ違い、ある道端では数人のヴェトナム人が道に座り、ヴェトナム音楽を大音量で聞いていた。彼らは遠くヴェトナムから日本に出稼ぎに来て、たまの休みに羽を伸ばしているのだと思った。
　しかし、あまりにもヴェトナム人が多いので、ヴェトナムに来たかと思うぐらいであった。

 先日あるマンションの玄関ロビーで撮影したものです。少年たちが7人集まっていますが、誰もがゲームに没頭していて、せっかく集まっているのに一緒に遊んだり、話したりしていません。個人個人がばらばらで意思疎通がありません。これで彼らは社会性が身につくのでしょうか。

 そういえば、今日名古屋駅近くの喫茶店でカレーライスを食べていたら、若い男女が入って来て私の隣に座りました。女性はジュース、男性はコーヒーを飲んでいましたが、二人は全然話をしないのです。二人ともスマートホンを見ているのです。15分か20分ぐらい経って二人は喫茶店を出て行きました。別に喧嘩をしている様子でもなく、別れ話でもなく、何にも話をしないのです。

一体今の子はどうなっているのでしょう。

荘川桜 Shokawa Cherry Trees

先日テレビで素晴らしいドキュメンタリ-番組を見た。二本の桜の木を50メートル高い所に移植した話である。

1952年12月、人口約1200人の荘川村が御母衣ダムの建設で湖底に沈むことになった。131メートルの高さのダムが完成すると、250世帯の家と二本の樹齢450年の桜の老木が人工湖に沈むのである。村人は7年間ダム建設反対運動を行ったが、ついには建設に同意した。

　ダム建設の責任者は電源開発総裁の高碕達之助であった。彼は老桜を保護するため桜博士と異名のある笹部新太郎に桜の移植を依頼した。笹部は老木を移植するのは無理だから申し出を断ろうとしたが、高崎の熱意に動かされて仕事を引き受けた。

　笹部は東海地方随一の庭師、庭正を選んで仕事をさせた。仕事は大変であったが、二本の老桜はダム湖の50メートル上にある小高い丘の上に移植された。その翌年、老桜は奇跡的に花を咲かせ、他の町や村に移住していた人たちは桜を見て涙した。

　毎年5月になると、旧荘川村の村人が老桜の下に集まり、美しい桜を愛で、古き良き日の思い出話に花を咲かすのである。

 

 Shokawa Cherry Trees

 

I watched an impressive TV documentary program the other day. It featured two old cherry trees which had been replanted to a new place about 50 meters higher than where they had originally stood.

   In December 1952, Shokawa Villiage with a population of about 1,200 was destined to be submerged in the bottom of a dam lake during the construction of Mihoro Dam. When the 131-meter dam was completed, the whole village consisting of about 250 houses and the 450-year-old two cherry trees would sink in the artificial lake. The villagers protested the dam construction for 7 years, but in the end they consented to it.

The head of the dam construction, Tatunosuke Takasaki wanted to preserve the cherry trees and asked Shintaro Sasabe, a botanist nicknamed as Cherry Tree Doctor. He first refused to move the cherry trees because he believed it would be impossible to replant such old cherry trees. However, Takasaki asked him so earnestly that he accepted the request.

   Sasabe chose Niwamasa Landscape Co., the best gardener in the Tokai area to do the job. After hard work, the trees were replanted in the hill 50 meters above the dam reservoir. The next spring the cherry trees bloomed miraculously to the tears of the villagers who had moved to other villages and towns.

   Every year in early May, the former villagers gather around the trees to admire the beauty of the cherry blossoms and remember the good old days.

「ビジネス英語」４月号・ライターズ・ワークショップで私の書いた英文が優秀賞を獲得した。本当に久しぶりに入賞して、こんなうれしいことはない。以下はその課題文と私の英文。

 

 

　　On the night of the air-raids in Sendai, Michiyo clung to Kozo’s back with her arms tightly wrapped around his neck from behind as he ran in the sea of raging fire. Although she was a little child at that time, she never forgot his warm body, his broad shoulders, and his sweat smell.
　　Since then, he became a special person for her.
When Michiyo happened to think of him, her heart was filled with burning passion.
　　As she was only a ten-year-old girl, she did not know anything about sexual matters between men and women, but she felt within her something uncontrollable, something instinctive that she could not explain.
　　Eventually, Kozo went to university in Tokyo, and soon Michiyo forgot about him.

 

梅とコマ JAPANESE APRICOT TREES AND TOPS

梅と独楽

 ３月５日、女房と大高緑地公園に梅見に行ってきた。日曜日であったので、たくさんの人でにぎわっていた。久しぶりに多くの幼児を見た。梅は満開で、あたり一面梅林で、紅梅や白梅が咲き誇っていた。広場では露店が開かれ、いろいろな食べ物が売られていた。ぜんざい、ハムバーガー、クレープ、コーヒー、甘酒、五平餅、唐揚げなど。

 面白かったのは独楽太郎という名前の大道芸人で、独楽のパフォーマンスをしていた。大人の頭ぐらいある大きな独楽から掌に乗る小さなコマまで、いろいろ使って独楽の芸当を見せてくれた。回っている独楽が扇子の上や刀の上移動して行ったり、直径３０センチほどの二つの輪をくぐったり、といろいろ見せてくれた。

気温も１５度あり、無風でよい日曜日であった。
