"Digger"
Starring Tom
Cruise. A social satire comedy depicting the ferocious struggles of an oil
company president. Recommended by Kiichi Fujiwara, who presents the "Focus
on the World Through Cinema" segment on NHK's Catch! World Top News.
Runtime: Approximately 2 hours.
Spoiler Alert
- Tom Cruise gives an impassioned performance playing an elderly man. He retained so little of his former look that at first I wondered who he was.
- The
cause of environmental pollution is oil. Confronted with blame for being
an oil company chief who drilled for oil, the president makes a brilliant
counterargument—arguing that the true culprits are the ordinary people who
have been consuming that oil. A magnificent twist.
- The opening is great. A massive chunk of Greenland's glacier—several times the size of Manhattan—approaches the Scandinavian Peninsula; if it collides, Europe will enter an ice age.
- They launch bombs at the ice mass to shatter it into pieces, but midway through, it turns out to be a complete farce.
- I wish the director had made it a serious movie instead of turning it into a farce. It makes a fool of the audience.
