私の住むマンションにはゴミ置き場があり、毎週金曜日は、生ごみを出す。最近、カラスが生ごみを漁り、網がしっかり掛けてないと、ビニール袋を突っつき、中のゴミを、ゴミ置き場周辺にばらまき散らす。汚いこと限りなし。

ある日、近くのマンションのゴミ置き場を見て、恐怖に襲われた。カラスがゴミ置き場の上に、吊られていた。カラスの死骸が空中にぶら下がっているのだ。

「何だ、これは。なぜカラスが、こんな所にぶら下がってるのか」

奇々怪々に思った。

そこマンション管理人に訊いて分かったが、最近「カラス撃退カラス」なる物が売られているとのこと。カラスの模型で、本物のカラスそっくりだ。管理人曰く。

「これを吊っておくと、カラスが寄り付かないんですよ。近所の人も大助かりだと言ってましてね。よかったら、困っている人に勧めて下さい」

烏のゴミ漁りで困っている人が名古屋市中に一杯いるはずだ。そのうちに、名古屋の辻々にカラスがぶら下がる、異様な風景になるだろう。カラス、バンザイ！

An Eye for an Eye,  A Crow for a Crow

Every Friday morning, I take my garbage to the collection area in my apartment building. Lately, crows have started tearing open the garbage bags to look for food. They pull out the trash and scatter it everywhere. It becomes very messy and dirty.

One day, I was shocked when I saw the garbage spot. A crow was hanging above it.

“Why is there a crow hanging here?” I asked myself, feeling nervous.

Later, I asked the building manager about it. He explained, “Recently, people have started using fake crows to scare away real ones. It’s like saying, ‘a crow for a crow.’”

He showed me one of the decoys. It looked very real.

“Thanks to the fake crow, the real ones stay away. The neighbors are happy too. It’s a strong way to keep them out. Please tell your neighbors about it,” he said.

Many people in Nagoya have trouble with crows. I worry that soon, fake crows will be hanging all over the city. That would look strange and maybe a little scary. But whether they’re real or fake, crows seem to be everywhere.

Long live the crows—real or not!
