　俳文の訳は以下の通り。This is the translation of my haibun into Japanese.

今日お墓参りをした。菊を供えてお参りを済ませると、隣の墓で女性がお祈りをしていた。その墓は６０年前に亡くなった少年の墓で、彼は野球観戦中に折れたバットがスタンドに飛んできて、彼にあたり亡くなったのだ。彼の墓が偶然松岡家の墓の隣に建てられたのである。

「こちら、山田守さんの墓ですね」

「はい」女性は驚いて返事をした。

「私の兄が、守さんの事故について話してくれたことがあります」と私は言った。

女性は守さんの甥の奥さんであった。守さんには会ったことはないが、今日たまたま親族の方に会うことができた。

転んでもただでは起きない TURN IT INTO PROFIT

転んでもただでは起きない

風邪をひいてこの二週間ほとんど寝ていた。東大寺や春日大社を二時間近く歩いたから引いたのだ。その日はそんなに寒くはなく、喫茶店やうどん店やレストランなどで何度も休憩したから、家に帰ったときはそんなに疲れたとは思わなかった。

ところが、翌朝、喉は痛いし、声はかれているし、身体がだるい。風邪の細菌が身体に既に入り込んでいて、弱みにつけ込んで暴れ始めたのだ。

お陰で、いろいろ欠席する羽目になった。古武道の杖道の稽古を二回、英語創作講座、英語短編読解講座、歴史講座、シェクスピア原書講座だ。

しかし、寝ていたおかげで、You-tubeで「老人と海」（英語と日本語）、カフカの「変身」、坂口安吾の「不良少年とキリスト」などを聞くことができた。風邪をひいたおかげだ。

TURN IT INTO PROFIT
 

I caught a cold and spent most of my day lying in bed for two weeks. The reason I picked up a cold is that I walked around Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Shrine for almost two hours. It was not a cold day and I took a break several times at a coffee shop, a noodle shop, and a restaurant. I didn’t feel tired when I came back home.
 

The next morning, however, my throat was sore and my voice was husky. I felt sick. The virus which I had had in my body got power and began to get wild.
 

I was absent from several classes, including two jodo martial art classes, an English creative writing class, a short story reading class, a history class, and a Shakespeare reading class.
 

However, I had a chance to listen to readings of many stories such as The Old Man and the Sea (both in English and Japanese), Kafka’s The Transformation, and Furyo-shonenn to kirisuto by Ango Sakaguchi on the U-Tube. I would not have listened to them if I had not had a cold.

11月27日（日）、奈良の東大寺に行ってきた。
この3か月間、南大門の金剛力士像に関する短編小説を書くためにいろいろな資料に当たってきた（小説4冊、運慶関係数冊、歴史や仏像関係、ネット検索、YOU-TUBE等）。
しかし、いくら関係資料に当たっても、この目で実物を見なければ本物の小説が書けないと思い、昨日奈良に行ってきた。
遠くから南大門を見たとき感動した。まるでエジプトのピラミッドを初めて見たときに覚えた感動と同じだった。阿吽の二像は本当に大きい。見上げると首が痛くなるくらいだ。残念なことに胴体から上は暗くて顔がはっきり見えなかった。（写真は彩度を修正）
短編は手直ししなければならないところがいろいろ見つかって良かった。
東大寺から春日大社まで歩き、それから近鉄奈良駅までまた歩いたから全部で1時間30分は歩いた。
しかし、今日の奈良は得るところが大いにあった。

BUDDHA GUARDIAN STATUES

I went to Todaiji Temple in Nara on November 27 to see Niozo or the Temple Guardian statues in Nandaimon Gate. I had been collecting materials to write a story about the statues. They included four novels and several books on Unkei, the sculptor who carved the guardians, history books and the Internet websites related to him.
I thought I could not write a good story about the guardians however much I might collect the materials. Therefore, I went to Nara to see the guardians firsthand.

Nandaimon Gate was as moving as when I saw Pyramids for the first time in my life. The two guardians were tremendously huge. They are almost 30 feet tall. Your neck will be sore if you look up at them for just one minute. Sad to say, however, I failed to see their faces clearly because the statues stood in dark places.
I walked from Todaiji Temple to Nara Station via Kasuga Shrine. I walked for more than an hour and a half.

I was tired, but it was a fruitful trip because I found several important parts of the story which I should improve.

 

中国ドラマ 武則天

中国ドラマ　武則天

今、中国ドラマ「武則天」を見ている（ＢＳ12　午後6時～7時）。唐の時代、後宮に入った女官、武如意の物語。側室が多数登場するが、全て美人ばかり。特に武如意を演じている才人は目を見張るほどの美人（ファン・ビンビン・范氷氷）。建物、部屋、調度品、庭、衣装などの舞台装置も豪華絢爛、樹木や草花、鳥の声など常に画像が美しい。また話の内容も、嫉妬、裏切り、陰謀、画策など人間の裏腹を描写している。登場人物が多くて、話が前回ぐらいから複雑になってきたが、火曜から金曜まで毎回女房と楽しんで見ている。

A CHINESE TV DRAMA "BUNYOI"

Ｉ　am enjoying watching a Chinese TV drama “Bunyoi,” which is broadcast from Tuesday to Friday evenings from 6 to 7 o’clock on BS channel 12. It is a drama about a concubine named Bunyoi, who waits on the emperor. The concubines are all beautiful women, but the actress (Fan Binbin), who plays the role of Bunyoi is breathtakingly beautiful.

 

The palace, the emperor’s room, court rooms, furniture, costumes are all gorgeous. The green plants, pink and red blossoms, and flowers in the gardens are beautiful, too. The story is loaded with envy, betrayal, conspiracy, and trickery. The drama also depicts the complexity of human minds.

 

The development of the story has recently become difficult, but my wife and I enjoy the drama.

 

ポケモンGO Ban Pokemon Go

ポケモンGOを禁止せよ

１０月２６日　愛知県一宮市で小学校４年生の則武敬太君９歳が、トラックを運転し男性（３６）に轢き殺された。男性は運転中にポケモンgoをしていた。私にも小学生の孫がいる。親御さんやら祖父母さんの嘆きはいかばかりか。

同様の事故死がすでに２件ある。　

８月２３日　徳島市で軽ワゴン車の運転手（３９）が、女性二人にぶつかり、７０代の女性が死亡。６０代の女性は腰の骨を折って重傷。

８月２６日　春日井市で自転車に乗っていた２０代の女性が、男性（２０代）が運転する車にはねられ死亡

わき見運転の罰金は６０００円だそうだ。米国ナイアンティック社は凶器のポケモンgoの製造販売を中止すべきではないか。死亡事故に至らなくてもポケモンgoによる事故が相次いでいる。政府は何をしているのか。日本では全面禁止にすべきだ。

もう一人の左甚五郎 ANOTHER GENIUS CARVER

　「幕末維新懐古談」が面白い。著者は西郷隆盛の銅像を造った仏師、彫刻家の高村光雲。本の一節に、光雲が少年の時にいたずらで彫った鼠の話がある。
　光雲は「師匠からあてがわれた仏様の方をやるのは無論であるが、それだけではたんのう出来ないような気持で」思いついたものを彫りたくなり、鼠を彫った。彫った檜の鼠に着色して、仏師の店頭の棚にのせて眺めていたら、急用を頼まれてそのまま店を出た。
　留守の間に老僧が店に来て師匠と話をしていたが、坊様は「さっきから、あの棚の上に鼠がいるので妙だなと思っていたのだが、あれは本当の鼠ではないのですね。彫りものなんですね」と言って、手のひらにのせて見ながら、「これは誠によくできている。本物と見間違えたのもむりはない。誰が彫ったのですか」と訊いた。師匠は「これは、あの幸吉のいたずらでしょう」と答えた。
　坊様は子年生まれでとても気に入り、譲ってもらいたいと申し出た。師匠は「お安いことです」と言って紙に包んで差し出すと、坊様はお礼に一分銀を師匠に渡した。
　師匠は、修行中の幸吉に金子を渡したものかと考えて、その金で蕎麦を買い、一家中で食べていた。そこへ幸吉が帰ってきて、何も知らぬまま幸吉が蕎麦を食べていたが、皆がくすくす笑って、鼠が蕎麦に化けたのだと打ち明けた。
　まるで左甚五郎の話ではないか。

ANOTHER JINGORO HIDARI

Bakumatsu Ishin Kaiko Dan written by a wooden Buddha carver, Koun Takamura is interesting. One of the chapters of the book tells an incident when he was an apprentice to a Buddhist sculptor

One day, because he was tired of carving a Buddha statue day after day under his master, he carved a mouse for pastime. After completion, he painted it and put it on a shelf in the master’s craft studio. While he was looking up at it, his teacher asked him to run an errand.

While he was away, a priest came to the studio and talked with his teacher. After a while, the priest stopped talking and said, “I thought there was a mouse on that shelf, but it is not a real mouse, but a carved one, isn’t it?” He went to the shelf, took the mouse from it, and looked at it carefully. “What a surprise! It looks like a real mouse. No wonder I mistook it for a real one. Who made this?”

“Kokichi must have carved it for fun,” my master said.

The priest liked the mouse very much and told him that he wanted it. My master said, “No problem,” and wrapped it in paper and handed it to him.

The priest gave him one bugin (about 3000 yen) for it.

My master thought it wrong to give the money to me because I was only an apprentice. So he ordered soba (buckwheat noodle) and his family were eating the noodle, when I came back from errand. I sat at table and was eating noodle too. Soon everyone at table began to laugh at me. MY master told me that my mouse had turned into the noodle.

This resembles a story about a genius woodcarver in Edo era, Hidari Jingoro, whose carved mouse is said to have moved around in a basin.
