BUNRAKU" COMPOSED BY TOSHIRO MAYUZUMI

"BUNRAKU" COMPOSED BY TOSHIRO MAYUZUMI

  I went to Soji Hall to listen to a concert titled “Hokusai and Debussy” with my wife. It was an ensemble consisting of a cello (Ryosuke Moriyama) and a piano (Kae Ozawa).
  I wondered why the concert was titled “Hokusai and Debussy.” I learned that Debussy was very fond of Hokusai’s ukiyoe. He even used Hokusai’s picture on the cover of his music collection. He decorated his room with his pictures, too.
  Moriyama played Bunraku composed by Toshiro Mayuzumi. Mayuzumi created a piece of Japanese traditional shamisen and gidayu music, which is performed by plucking the strings of a cello like a Japanese koto harp.
  True Mayuzumi did a great job by composing Bunraku, but I did not like it. It made me sick. The sound was far from that of jyoruri. I heard that Mayuzumi composed Bunraku because he was once asked why he played only Western music and not Japanese music.
It is disappointing if Westerners think Bunraku is traditional Japanese music. The sound of Jyoruri and the sound of cello Bunraku are quite different.
  To tell the truth, I wanted to cover my ears so that I did not have to hear it during the Bunraku peformance. Inharmonic tone continued endlessly. I became sick. I felt nothing but pain in my brain. I got angry. I did not pay money to suffer from such a torture. I wanted the performance to come to stop immediately.
If you want foreigners to understand Japanese traditional music, you must let them listen to genuine Japanese music performed by genuine Japanese musical instruments. A cello is a cello and not a shamisen.

YOUR BODY IS YOUR NOTEBOOK

YOUR BODY IS YOUR NOTEBOOK
I have been practicing Japanese martial art Jodo (stick way) for 20 years and yet I am not satisfied with my skills. The more I practice, the more difficult the art becomes. Recently I have come to a good idea to improve my skill.
It is “do not record the new skills your teacher has taught you.” This is easily explained by an example of video recording. After you record the programs you want to watch later, you think you can watch them any time you want, and tend to postpone the time to watch it and end up with not watching them.
Just as TV programs recording, if you write the new technique in the notebook, you feel you have “learned” it, because if you look at the notebook, you can practice at any time you want, and alas, since the techniques are limitless, you will forget the ones you have recorded before. And you end up not practicing the technique.
What I began to do about Jodo is to practice the new technique RIGHT NOW or RIGHT ON THAT DAY until you have learned it. It may take more than one day, but after five or six days practice, you will learn it. Your body learns the technique. You don’t have to look at the notebook. Your body is your notebook.

CG Films Cripple Hollywood

CG Films Cripple Hollywood

I saw the science-fiction movie, Gravity directed by Alfonso Cuarón. It was so thrilling from the beginning to the end.
The story goes like this: debris crashes into a US space shuttle and breaks it into pieces. The only survivor (Sandra Bullock) escapes from it, drifts in space to the deserted International Space Ship, and enters it only to find no fuel left. She then gets out of the ISS, and again “swims” in space to another deserted Chinese space ship, Shin-sen (God-ship). However, new debris begins to collide with it. [SPOILER ALERT!!] She moves into a space capsule attached to Shin-sen, disconnects it, and heads for Earth.
   Gravity reminded me of 2001: A Space Odyssey, an epoch-making sci-fi film directed by Stanley Kubrick. The film makes excellent use of special effects. The scene where a pen floats in the spaceship was impressive. I found myself thinking, “That’s the way an object floats in zero gravity.” In Gravity the astronaut floats in space, her body slowly rotating against the blue-white Earth in the background.
   I hear most of the images in Gravity were produced by computer graphics. The astronaut’s movements look so natural that the viewers would think it was filmed in space.
   Another surprising CG movie is Life of Pie, in which a tiger and a boy drift in a lifeboat in the sea for months. The tiger’s movement looks so real: its fierce eyes, its nostrils flaring open and shut, its mouth with bared fangs, and its furry body. Even the movement of its body hair looked so natural that I first thought that it was a real tiger.

   There are other amazing CG films such as Jurassic Park directed by Steven Spielberg and the Spider-Man series. I still remember the fear I was seized with when I saw Tyrannosaurus rex attacking the tour group. As for Spider-Man films, I heard that all his actions above the ground, such as climbing skyscrapers or flying through the air while hanging by a thread were produced by computer graphics. Only after he touches down on the ground, does an actor replace the computer-generated Spider-Man. This means no actors are necessary in making a film. Any man or woman, ugly or handsome, young or old, can be created by computers. CG generated actors can move as naturally as real actors. They can probably reveal emotions even better than human actors. This is good news for film directors because they don’t have to complain about an actor's poor performance..
This is also true with locations. You don’t have to go to Africa to film wild animal movies because CG can provide jungle scenes just like in Avatar, a 2009 film directed by James Cameron. It used computer generated forests and mountains. You don’t have to go to Rome to produce Roman Holiday when CG can generate any place in Rome. You don’t have to go to the sea to film The Old Man and the Sea because computers can draw an ideal sea.
Hollywood used to be the mecca of film-making industry because of its mild, dry weather. Recently, however, the number of Hollywood-made films is decreasing partly because of the decrease of film-goers as well as the increase of CG films. I’m afraid Hollywood will be replaced by the CG industry in the near future.

Parting from Friends

      Parting from Friends
T-kun e-mailed me yesterday that S-kun had died of prostate cancer. He was 71 years old. He was my university day friend. Last year another of my university day friend K-kun died. He was around 72 years old, too. To die at the age of 71 is too early. I am 70 years and 11 months old.
A friend of mine once told me that men under 70 are always thinking about women, but men over 70 are always thinking about death. What makes them think that way? It is probably because of their bitter experience of parting from their beloved friends.

Griffin’s Sonnet vs. Shakespeare’s

Griffin’s Sonnet vs. Shakespeare’s

My Lady’s hair is thread of beaten gold;
Her front the purest crystal eye hath seen;
Her eyes the brightest stars the heavens hold;
Her cheeks, red roses, such as seld have been;
Her pretty lips of red vermilion dye;
Her hand of ivory the purest white;
Her blush AURORA, or the morning sky;
Her breast displays two silver fountains bright;
The spheres, her voice; her grace, the Graces three;
Her body is the saint that I adore;
Her smiles and favours, sweet as honey be.
Her feet, fair THETIS praised evermore.
But Ah, the worst and last is yet behind:
For of a griffon she doth bear the mind!
(Bartholomew Griffin, 1596)

My mistress’s eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red, than her lips red:
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
I have seen roses damasked, red and white,
But no such roses see I in her cheeks;
And in some perfumes is there more delight
Than in the breath that from my mistress reeks.
I love to hear her speak, yet well I know
That music hath a far more pleasing sound:
I grant I never saw a goddess go,
My mistress, when she walks, treads on the ground:
And yet by heaven, I think my love as rare,
As any she belied with false compare.
(Shakespeare)

Griffin praises his Lady as if she were a goddess. (He conceals his name in the last line.) Whereas, Shakespeare speaks the worst of his mistress first, but in the end he reveals his deepest love to her. Shakespeare is grinning behind Griffin’s back.

WASHOKU JAPANESE TRADITIONAL CUISINE

The following is my translation of an article about "washoku" in Yomiuri Shimbun (Dec. 6).

WASHOKU JAPANESE TRADITIONAL CUISINE
I remember the sound of the kitchen knife hitting the cutting board as my mother was preparing meals; the smell of steaming miso soup and white rice with pickles, and seasonal fish and vegetables—they were not too expensive considering they are considered delicacies in Japan.
I feel a pang of nostalgia to remember the days when I sat at the table with my family in my boyhood. The Japanese traditional cuisine or “washoku” has recently been added to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
It is nice that the honor has been given to “washoku” not only because it is beautiful to look at and rich in seasonal ingredients but also because it has longstanding conventions: its abundant variety of cuisine depending on the locality, its ages-old close tie to annual rituals such as New Year’s celebrations, and its contribution to strengthening familial and community bonds.
It may sound exaggerated, but I am proud that the quality of the Japanese traditional cuisine, varying in tastes according to each family, was globally appreciated.

Captain Phillips

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS

I saw “Captain Phillips” starring Tom Hanks. The film was exciting and thrilling from the beginning to the last. It explaiins how Somalia’s poverty drives men to rob ships off the coast of Somalia; I think the director does not blame the Somalians 100 percent. (Poverty is evil.)
In the movie, Captain Phillip’s huge cargo ship is assaulted by several armed Somalians on board a tiny boat. They relentlessly shoot the ship, but to my surprise, the cargo ship’s crew do not shoot back. All they do is to discharge water in all directions around the ship. It is ridiculous. Why don’t they shoot at the pirates? They have the right use guns to defend themselves. Do only the warships have the right to shoot guns and cannons? Is there any law against the use of guns by cargo ship crew?
