EXCERPTS FROM "LIFE OF PI"

Excerpts from "Life of Pi" written by Yann Martel

I picked up some of the sentences from “Life of Pi” that depicted the relationship between Pi and the Bengal tiger, Richard Parker. Through reading them, you will understand how much Pi loved Parker, and how much he missed the tiger when it left him and vanished into the jungle. The excerpts show that even a fierce beast can be a close friend, even a better friend than human beings.
After I read the story I sympathized with Pi.

      ****************************

I hated him for it, yet at the same time I was grateful. I am grateful. It’s the plain truth: without Richard Parker, I wouldn’t be alive today to tell you my story.

A tiger is a fascinating animal at any time, and all the more so when it is your sole companion.

Truly I do. I love you, Richard Parker. If I didn’t have you now, I don’t know what I would do. I don’t think I would make it. No, I wouldn’t. I would die of hopelessness. Don’t give up, Richard Parker, don’t give up. I’ll get you to land, I promise.

I closed my eyes and waited for my breath to leave my body. I muttered, “Goodbye, Richard Parker. I’m sorry for having failed you. I did my best. Farewell. Dear Father, dear Mother, dear Ravi, greetings. Your loving son and brother is coming to meet you. Not an hour has gone by that I haven’t thought of you.

At the edge of the jungle, he stopped. I was certain he would turn my way. He would look at me. He would growl. In some such way, he would conclude our relationship. He did nothing of the sort. He only looked fixedly into the jungle. Then Richard Parker, companion of my torment, awful, fierce thing that kept me alive, moved forward and disappeared forever from my life.

I wept like a child. It was not because I was overcome at having survived my ordeal, though I was. Nor was it the presence of my brothers and sisters, though that too was very moving. I was weeping because Richard Parker had left me so unceremoniously.

I wish I had said to him then—yes, I know, to a tiger, but still—I wish I had said, “Richard Parker, it’s over. We have survived. Can you believe it? I owe you more gratitude than I can express. I couldn’t have done it without you. I would like to say it formally: Richard Parker, thank you for saving my life. And now go where you must.

Watch out for Man. He is not your friend. But I hope you will remember me as a friend. I will never forget you, that is certain. You will always be with me, in my heart.

What is that hiss? Ah, our boat has touched sand. So farewell, Richard Parker, farewell. God be with you.

Billy Elliot

 . . . . . . .
A successful introduction is the key for a successful film. “Billy Elliot” begins with a scene in which an 11-year-old boy, Billy, has an interest in ballet. This introduction allures you to want to know how his interest in ballet develops.
The ballet teacher, Mrs. Wilkinson, recognizes Billy’s ability in ballet. She recommends him to audition for the Royal Ballet School. You wonder whether Billy will pass it or not. Here, you identify yourself with Billy, and are led to the end of the story.
Billy faces obstacles on his way to become a dancer. First, his father, Jackie, disagrees. He says that ballet is “For girls, not for lads. Lads do football or boxing or wrestling.” When Mrs. Wilkinson knows that Billy can’t go to the audition, she visits Billy’s house. There she meets Billy’s older brother, Tony’s ferocious opposition. He says, “I’ve been in a fucking cell all night, and you come around here talking shite. I’m not having any brother of mine running around like a right twat for your gratification, you middle-class cow.” In response to his verbal attacks, she rebukes, “Excuse me, this is not for my gratification, you sanctimonious little shit.”  Their argument is so fierce that you are totally involved in the film. In spite of his father and brother’s opposition, however, Billy wants to practice ballet.
The second obstacle is that Billy’s mother is dead. Why has she been dead in the story? It is to increase your anxiety. Usually a mother stands by her child when her husband is against him. She tries to persuade her husband. In this movie, Billy does not have any family members who support him. His grandmother can’t be a help because she is demented. However, his mother supports him indirectly in her will: “But please know that I was always there with you through everything. Always be yourself. I love you forever.”
The third and biggest obstacle takes place when Billy’s father and brother are taken into custody on the very day Billy is going to have an audition. Billy has to give it up. You can’t help sympathizing with him. The film disappoints you at the crucial moment.
The fourth is lack of money that will enable Billy to go to London for the audition. Jackie, an enthusiastic striker of a coal miners’ union, quits it and joins the miners who obey the employers. Tony, surprised to see his father’s betrayal, gets angry with him, but when his father says to him in tears, “It’s for wee Billy! He might be a fucking genius for all we know. . . . I’m sorry, I’m sorry, my son.” They hug each other and cry. This is such an appealing scene that it moves you to tears.
There are several other moving scenes. One of them is the scene in which Jackie recognizes Billy’s talent in dancing. While Billy is teaching ballet to his friend, Michael, he is caught red-handed by Jackie. Suddenly Billy begins to dance frantically in front of him. Jackie watches Billy with his eyes wide open, overwhelmed. He recognizes he has been wrong about Billy. His attitude towards Billy changes 180 degrees and rushes to Mrs. Wilkinson to ask her how much the audition costs.
Billy’s answer to a woman examiner’s “one last question” at the end of the interview is also impressive. She asks Billy, "What does it feel like when you're dancing?" Billy says, "Don't know. Sorta feels good. It’s sorta stiff and that, but once I get going... then I, like, forget everything. And... sorta disappear. Sorta disappear. Like I feel a change in me whole body. Like there’s a fire in me body. I'm just there. Flyin' like a bird. Like electricity. Yeah, like electricity."
Another impressive scene is the one where Billy’s dad, brother, and grandmother impatiently wait for the letter from the Royal Ballet School that will announce the result of the audition. The postman at last delivers the letter. Billy comes home, gets the letter, and goes to another room, but does not appear for a long time. His family rush into the room impatiently only to hear Billy say, “I got in.”
The most moving scene is the ending. I don’t know any film that has a more impressing ending than “Billy Elliot.” Billy, now a full-fledged 25-year-old dancer, dashes to the stage like a swan from a wing to perform The Swan accompanied by Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake.” Jackie and Tony in the audience watch him overwhelmed by a flood of emotions. And right in front of them, Billy jumps high in the air above the stage. That instant the film ends. What an impressive ending!
I did not know Matthew Bourne's “The Male Swan Lake.” Later I knew that the dancer in “Billy Elliot” was Adam Cooper, the principal dancer of the British Royal Ballet. I can’t forget his sharp eyes, broad-shouldered body, and the wings that covered his legs.
I fully understand why “Billy Elliot” won various prizes, including the British Independent Film Awards, the British Academy of Film and the Television Arts, and the Young Artist Awards.
“Billy Elliot” was so moving that I saw it three times.

ライフ オブ パイ LIFE OF PI

 LIFE OF PI

This film is one of the most impressive movies that I have ever seen. The unbelievable situation, the CG technique, and the relationship between Pi and the tiger are just amazing.
Nobody can imagine such an unusual situation where a 16-year-old boy and a Bengal tiger float in the same boat for more than 200 days in the Pacific Ocean. The film viewers, however, accept the unbelievable situation because each stage of the story is realistic and plausible. A story fails if the reader doubts its reality, but Life of Pi is realistic and has no room to doubt.
The plot is simple. A ship loaded with zoo animals wrecks due to a storm. The boy named Pi survives in a lifeboat, but he soon finds a tiger named Richard Parker in it. He first avoids the tiger but later tames and befriends it. After seven months’ drifting, they reach the Mexican coast, almost dead.
This film has proved the victory of computer graphic technique. The pamphlet of Life of Pi says every scene of the tiger on the lifeboat was made with computer graphics. The tiger was so vivid and alive with its sharp eyes, rich fur, and straight whiskers that I thought it was a real tiger. CG is used in many films, including Jurassic Park, Spiderman, and Avatar. If the CG-created actors are so realistic, no actors will be necessary. What will become of them, I wonder.
The relation between Pi and Richard Parker is well depicted. First, Pi is so scared of the beast that he makes a raft to sit on and connects it to the lifeboat with a rope about 5 meters long. The first change of their relationship takes place when Pi saves Richard, who is almost drowning in the sea. The second change comes when Pi tames Richard Parker with a rod and fish. The third occurs after a violent storm. Pi caresses Richard, who is on the verge of death, being tossed about by huge waves. For Pi, Richard becomes the only friend in the Pacific. “Without Richard Parker, I wouldn’t be alive today,” Pi says later. And their parting is shown at the end of the movie when Richard Parker steps into a jungle “unceremoniously” without looking back at Pi. Richard Parker’s world and Pi’s are completely different. Pi cries loudly not because he is saved but because Richard Parker disappears with no sign of friendship, with no sign of reluctance. Richard Parker has been Pi’s dearest brother in arms for many months.
Over all, the film entertains the viewer with beautiful scenes: the star-filled sky, the calm blue sea, the stunning performance of whales and dolphins, and a green floating island.
Life of Pi was so impressive that I saw it twice.

HEIDI, WHO CAN COMMUNICATE WITH ANIMALS

MRS. DOLITTLE

I was again amazed at the superhuman power Heidi possesses. She can communicate with animals, including elephants, dogs, cats, dolphins, fish, lions, and ant-eaters

The other day, I watched “Genius! Shimura Zoo” on TV, in which Heidi communicated with ant-eaters and lions. A zoo attendant at a zoo asked Heidi why the male ant-eater and the female ant-eater had not mated for a long time.

Heidi concentrated on both ant-eaters for a long time, and said, “The male ant-eater has just sent me a message. He is comparing two female ant-eaters. He is wondering which female ant-eater is better for him. The one in the neighboring cage seems more attractive to him than the one in the same cage with him. So, if you cover the neighboring cage and prevent the male ant-eater from seeing the one in it, he will give up the other one and mate with the one with him.”

Another surprising answer concerning the lion made me feel that animals have the same emotion as human beings such as jealousy, inferiority complex, and self-esteem.

She revealed the lions’ feelings when the lion keeper wanted some advice as to how to mate the two-year old male lion and the 12 year-old female lion. Heidi’s answer was terrific. She said, “The male lion has an inferiority complex, because his crest is so scarce that he does not look like the king of beasts. He looks like a female lion. In fact the visitors wonder whether the lion they are looking at is male or female. Since the lion understands the visitors’ conversation, he is ashamed of himself. On the other hand, the female lion does not regard the young lion as her mate. She makes light of him, and sometimes even threatens him. All she wants is to have the male lion grow up and become a matured, dignified lion. She is waiting for the time.”

After I watched the program, I wondered what makes difference between human beings and animals. Animals feel just the same way as human beings. The only distinction is, I thought, appearance.

DANCE BY PRETTY OTOHIME GIRLS

DANCE BY PRETTY OTOHIME GIRLS

I went to Xian to see the Terracotta Warriors of Emperor Qin Shihuang last April. At that time I had a chance to see beautiful dances by Chinese dancing girls. They were like Otohime (Princess of the Ryugu Dragon Palace in a Japanese folktale). I would like to go to Xian to see the dance again. (See the video at the top)

TARO URASHIMA SONG

Once upon a time, Taro Urashima
Led by the tortoise he had saved
Came to the Dragon Palace
Its beauty was beyond description

The princess treated him with delicious dishes and
Dances by porgies and paralichthys olivaceus
Taro enjoyed himself so much
Time passed quickly like a dream

Taro was tired of staying in the palace
He bid farewell to the princess
Hurried home with a treasure box
She had given him as a present

When he came back to his home village
Gone were his house and the village
The people he passed by
Were all unfamiliar to him

Feeling lonely he opened
The lid of the treasure box
Out of which rose white smoke
And he became an old man

A FALLLING BALL IN A TRAIN

from NHK television

A FALLING BALL IN A TRAIN
I would be fond of physics if I had attended the physics classes by Prof. Walter Lewin of Massachusetts Institute of Technology when I was young. His classes were so popular that they have recently been broadcasted on NHK television (Saturday 4:00-5:00 p.m. MIT Hakunetsu Kyoshitsu). I have so far watched two of his classes on gravity.
His class consists of a theory and its experiment. Last week I watched his experiment in which he demonstrated how a ball which you throw vertically in an airplane falls exactly back into your hand.
When I was a child, I was riding a train with my brother. I had a ball in my hand and repeatedly threw it vertically. Whenever I threw it, it fell on my hand. My brother and I wondered why it fell in my hand even if the train was running fast. Later, in high school I studied in the physics class that the ball is moving at the same speed as the train moves. I thought I understood the theory, but only superficially.
Last week, I watched a very interesting program in which Prof. Lewin first taught his students the law of gravity, the speed of falling objects, and energy conservation law. I understood most of his explanation. Then, he said he would demonstrate how a ball which a passenger in a plane throws vertically into the air falls down in his hand.
He first showed a toy car (supposedly a plane) with a funnel on top. He then put a golf-size ball in the funnel. And finally the car moved. In the course of the movement, the ball was shot up. It drew a beautiful parabola over the on-going train and successfully fell into the funnel. The students gave a big applause.
I was amazed at his experiment. I would have liked my late brother to watch the experiment.

HOLLYWOOD FESTIVAL ORCHESTRA

I went to the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater to listen to the New Year Concert by the Hollywood Festival Orchestra on January 13. The Orchestra played famous film music such as Gone with the Wind, the Sound of Music, Spiderman, Lawrence of Arabia, My Fair Lady, Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark, Mission Impossible, Superman, Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Titanic, the Bridge over the River Kwai, and James Bond Theme.
In addition to the music, Billy King sang songs including Love Is a Many Splendored Thing and Stand by Me.
While I was listening to the music, I remembered the scenes of each movie, and the days when I saw it came back to me. Take Mission Impossible for example, I hadn’t listened to it for about 40 years, but I remembered the faces of the team members: the leader, the black young man, the huge strong man, and the man specialized in disguise, and the pretty woman.
While the orchestra played Gone with the Wind, they projected the photographs of the pretty heroin, Vivien Leigh, on the stage back screen. Audrey Hepburn’s pictures were also projected during the performance of My Fair Lady. While I was listening to the two pieces of music, watching their photographs, I even heard their voices.
The music had a magical power. It brought me to the days of 50 years ago when I was young. I was glad to listen to the music. Hollywood movies and their accompanying music have somehow contributed to what I am now.
  Thank you the film music.
