鹿話２題 TWO DEER STORIES

　秦王朝の権力者である趙高は、秦の重臣が自分の味方か敵かを見抜く奇策を考えつく。彼は二代皇帝胡亥(こがい)の前に鹿を連れてきて、「陛下、これは馬でございます」という。胡亥は「鹿ではないか」と答えた。そこで趙高は、整列する文武百官１人１人に「これは馬か鹿か」と質問した。大半の重臣は「馬」と答えたが、一部は鹿と答えた。趙高は、鹿と答えた重臣の顔を覚えておき、後で全て処刑した。
　昔、奈良では鹿は「神獣」とされており、手厚い保護が行われていた。間違って殺そうものなら死罪であった。ある朝、豆腐屋の与兵衛が表に出てみると、犬が卯の花（おから）を食べていた。薪を犬に投げると、命中して犬は死んでしまう。ところが、死んだのは犬ではなく鹿であった。与兵衛はお裁きを受けた。裁きを担当した奉行は与兵衛を助けようと思い、「これは鹿ではない、犬だ。鹿には角がなくてはならない。しかし、これには角が無い。犬だから裁きの必要はない」と判決を下して与平を救った。
　物は言いようである。

TWO DEER STORIES

During the Qin Dynasty, a powerful man named Shoko hit an idea that would distinguish between his opponents and loyalists. He brought a deer in front of the Qin Second Emperor, Kogai, and said, “Your Majesty, this is a horse.” Kogai replied, “This is a deer.” Then, Shoko asked each of the senior officials whether it was a deer or a horse.
