THE ANSWER IS IN YOUR HAND

諸君、元気にそれぞれの新しい道の第1歩を踏み出しましたか。今回の「MATの目」は、修了式の後で行われた離任式の挨拶です。commentを待ってます。

THE ANSER IS IN YOUR HAND (PART ONE)
  The closing ceremony for the 2007 school year was held at the auditorium on March 19. After the ceremony both Mr. Ben Backwell and I gave a farewell speech.
  First, Mr. Backwell told a short but illuminating story in English. The following is a brief summary:
  I had a grandfather. He was so wise that he gave just the right answer to any question. I also had a sister, who was clever but naughty.
  One day my sister and I caught a bird in a bush. Then she said to me, “I have a good idea. Let’s ask our grandfather a difficult question. I will ask him whether the bird in my hand is dead or alive. If he says it is alive, I will crush it to death and open my hand. If he says it is dead, I will open my hand and let it fly. He can never give us the right answer. Let’s try him, shall we?”
  I followed her to our grandfather reluctantly. She said to him, “Grandpa, please answer my question. I have a bird in my hand. Is it alive or dead?” He thought a moment and then replied, “My little girl, the answer is in your hand."
  Mr. Backwell closed his speech by saying, “Now everyone, please remember that the answer to ‘how to lead your life’ is in your hand.”

 2007年度修了式が講堂で3月19日に開かれました。修了式後、バックウェル先生と私が離任の挨拶をしました。
 まず、バックウェル先生が短いながらも心を照らす話を英語でされました。以下はその要旨です。
 「私には祖父がいましたが、とても賢くてどんな問題にも正しく答えました。私には姉もいましたが、利口でいたずら好きでした。
ある日、姉と私は藪で鳥を一羽捕まえました。姉は私に言いました。「いい考えがあるわ。おじいさんに難しい問題を出しましょう。私が手に持っている鳥は死んでいるか生きているかという質問よ。もしおじいさんが「生きている」と言ったら、手の中の鳥を握りつぶして殺し、手を開けるのよ。もし「死んでいる」と言ったら、手を開けて鳥を飛ばすのよ。答は当たりっこないわよ。おじいさんの頭を試してみましょうね」
 私はいやいや姉に従っておじいさんのところへ行きました。姉がおじいさんに尋ねました。「おじいちゃん、わたしね、鳥を手ん中に持ってるんだけど、生きてるか、死んでるか」おじいさんは少し考えて答えました。「その答はね、お前の手の中にあるんだよ」
 バックウェル先生はお話をこう締めくくりました。「さて、皆さん、皆さんがどう生きるべきかの答は、皆さんの手中にあることを忘れないで下さい」

THE ANSWER IS IN YOUR HAND (PART TWO)

 Following Mr. Backwell, I gave my farewell speech in Japanese. It went like this:
 My talk is a continuation of ‘The Answer Is in Your Hand.’ I have taught English here for 42 years, but I have never had a chance to teach you. So, I would like to give you my first and last English lesson. It will focus on how to improve your English.
 Suppose you have a bucket with a tiny hole at its side and near the bottom. If the bucket is empty, nothing comes out of the hole, but if you pour some water into it, water comes out in a trickle. If it is full of water, water comes out in a gush. Learning English is the same. The more English you pour into your brain, the more English comes out. The more input, the more output.
 What is, then, the most effective way to increase the amount of input? It is reading aloud. When you read aloud, you use three senses at the same time: the eye, mouth, and ear. You use your eyes to look at the text, your mouth to pronounce it, and your ears to listen to what you are pronouncing. The more senses you use, the more easily you can memorize things. How did you learn the times tables when you were an elementary school boy? You learned them not by just looking at it, but by reciting them repeatedly.
 The answer to whether you can be good at English or not is in your hand.

 バックウエル先生のお話に続いて、今度は私が日本語で次のように離任の挨拶をしました。
 「私の話は『答は手中にある』の続きです。私は42年間この学校で英語を教えてきましたが、諸君に教える機会がありませんでした。それで今日は諸君に私の最初で最後の授業をしますが、内容はどのように英語の力をつけるかについてです。
 諸君、バケツを想像して下さい。ただし、そのバケツの底に近いところの側面には小さな穴があるものです。バケツが空だと穴から何も出てきませんが、水を入れると、チョロチョロと穴から水が流れてきます。バケツが水で一杯だと、水は勢いよく出てきます。英語の学習も同じです。諸君の頭の中に英語を入れれば入れるほど、多くの英語が出てきます。入力と出力は正比例するのです。
 では、どうしたら最も効率よく英語を入力できるでしょう。答は音読です。音読すれば、目と口と耳の三つの感覚を同時に使うことになります。目は文章を読むために、口は発音するために、耳は発音している音を聴くために使うからです。諸君は小学生のとき算数の九九をどのようにして覚えましたか。黙って見ているだけで覚えたのでなく、何回も声に出して覚えたことでしょう。
 英語ができるようになるかどうかの『答は諸君の手中にある』のです」

    中一の時、先生からこの話を聞いたのを
    今でも覚えています。
    確かに、単語はただ見ているだけよりも
    聞く+発音する+書く、この3つ全て行う事でかなり頭に残りますよね。
    僕は今9月入学に向けて
    毎日TOEFLの勉強に奮闘しています(汗)ww
    5月5日からDaytonaの方で頑張ってきます!!

  3. 家庭教師で英語を教えていますがどうやって教えていいのかわからず戸惑ってます(笑)先生の難しさがわかりました!「接触してたらonだよ」って教えたら「じゃあえんぴつが机の裏にくっついてたらthe pencil is on the deskなの?」って聞かれました。合ってるかわかりません(笑)!これでいいんですか?


    南山英米ですが、195人中男が20人いるかいないかです。帰国子女ばっかで勝ち目がありません!クラス分けのテストでも下の方です!でも頑張ってついていきます!宗教はダンフィー神父になりました。

    Since my computer is out of order, I can not write my message to you in Japanese. Something is wrong with my PC. So, I am writing to you in English.

    Twenty out of 195 is too small a number! Ma-a,Ganbatte, yatte kudasai.

    About ON,
    You should say, "The pencil is on the back side of the desk." deshou-ne. Ondoku o saseyo.
    dewa mata. kikoku-shijyos are not good at Japanese and Japanese culture, you see.

  5. 久しぶりです。やっとパソコンの使い方に慣れてきたので先生のブログに書き込むことができました。大学生活が始まって思ったことは大学は広く迷いやすいところだということと全国から様々な人が来る場所だなということです。生物の教科書が全部英語なので英語の力をもっとつけないと大変そうです。これからもブログ頑張ってください!毎月楽しみに待ってます。

    名古屋大学は中部地方の大学といっても、やはり全国区だ。日本中から、また海外からの留学生も多いから、せいぜい蛙にならず、大海を知ってください。

    生物英語おそるるに足らず。受験英語に比べたら、簡単。文法や構文をひねくり回してない素直な英文だから。専門用語(terminology)だけ要注意。

    Thank you for writing to me. I am glad that you read my 30th essay, MAT'S EYE ON THE WORLD. It's nice to hear from you.

    You were a great help for me in publishing the Nanso「南窓」. I admire you for your constant devotion to Nanzan Student Government(生徒会), and Nazan High School.

    Nozue-sensei was an active English Club student when he was a Nanzan student. He is still active in teaching mathematics, isn't he?

    I revise my blog at least once a month, usually on the first day of each month. So please have a look at my blog.

    I haven't seen you for months.
    How have you been?
    Today, I have a good news about my university.
    I had admitted to enter the advanced class in English.
    When I was in the English litercy class, I met a teacher who had graduated from Nanzan.
    I felt easy to meet him.
    His name was Mr.Y.C.Watanabe. Do you remember his name?
    He said that he had taught English by Mr.Matsuoka and he is a very wonderful teacher.
    I told him you had retired your job, but he had already new that. Then I told him Mr.Matsuoka have a blog. Can I tell him this blog's url?

  11. Wow! Matsuoka-sensei. This is Yoshikazu from your 1973-75 (??) class! What a wonderful surpirse to have come across your blog, particularly through our "mutual" student! I think about you often and mention to everyone to this day how much I appreciated your class, your devotion, and YOU for being who you were. You gave me so much insight into how important it is to keep working at things. You were always on the go when it comes to improving your "self." I believe so much of what I have been able to accomplish so far professionally is because of you and your wonderful colleagues at Nanzan Jr. and High School. I hope we get to see each other soon. In the meantime, do take care of yourself, and here is my big, big otsukaresamadeshita to you for your 42 years of service and dedication!

    Thank you very much for your big, big "negirai no" words. If I have been, as you say, of any help to you, nothing is more rewarding to me. Your mail has given me happy encouragement.
