昨日、古武道・神道夢想流杖道の後目録を拝受した。杖道を習い始めたのが48歳の時で現在73歳だから、かれこれ25年間稽古をしてきたことになる。奥入り拝受が2004年、初目録が2008年であった。よくもこれだけ長い間続いたと思う。後目録は師範代が務まる位である。次の位は免許皆伝となる。

 

杖道は4尺の棒を使って太刀と戦う武術であるが、習えば習うほど奥の深い武術であることが分かる。殺すか殺されるかの戦いであるから、一瞬の隙を見せてはいけない（わざと見せる場合もあるが）。そのためには杖をいかに効率よく動かし相手の急所を打撃ないし突くかである。姿勢は勿論、足の運び方、杖の持ち方、構え方、振り方、眼力、発声、全てが一体となっていなければならない。

 

初心者に杖道を教える立場になったが、いまだに杖を正確に構えたり、正しく振ることが出来ない。姿勢も悪いし、杖の振り方も正しく出来ていない。これからどれだけ技が向上するか分からないが、さらに技を磨いていきたい。

 

I WAS GIVEN GOMOKUROKU RANK IN  JODO MARTIAL ARTS

　　I was conferred the rank of Go-mokuroku in the martial art of Shinto Muso-ryu Jodo by Master Hiroaki Ishida on January 16. A Gomokuroku holder is qualified to teach Jodo in the absence of the master. It has been a long road to gain the rank. Since I began to practice Jodo at the age of 48, I have been practicing it for 25 years. I won the rank of Okuiri (first rank) in 2004, followed by the rank of Sho-mokuroku (second rank) in 2008. The next rank is Menkyo-kaiden or the full-mastership.

　　Jodo is a martial art in which you use a 1.2 meter-long jo or stick to combat your enemy armed with a sword. The combat is life-or-death fighting. The more you practice Jodo, the more deeply you understand how difficult it is to use a jo. You must always keep your guard up unless you lure your opponent to attack you. You must use your jo most effectively to hit the opponent’s head or vital parts. You must pay full attention to the way you walk, hold and wield jo. Your posture, eyes, and shouts must be integrated into one.
　　I am now in a position to teach Jodo to the newcomers and beginners, but I still cannot hold or weild a jo correctly. My posture is not perfect yet. I must practice much more.

   She feels happy but 20 years old is too young.
Grandma:Thank you, but it's impossible.
Grandchild: But you are so small.
 

メナード美術館へ VISIT MENARD ART MUSEUM

メナード美術館へ　

 

1月4日、女房と小牧市にあるメナード美術館に行ってきました。目当ての作品は葛飾応為の「夜桜美人図」です（応為は葛飾北斎の娘）。この絵はテレビ番組「美の巨人」でもとりあげられ、一度本物を見たいと思っていた絵です。
暗い夜空に星が点々と輝き、樹木のシルエットの下で、妙齢の美人が恋文？をしたためている絵です。背の高い灯篭と背の低い灯篭の間に立ち、二つの灯篭からの灯りが美人の顔や手元や着物の裾を照らしています。背景の桜も照らされて幻想的な絵画に仕上がっています。
北斎は「美人画では娘にかなわない」と言っていたそうです。

VISIT TO MENARD ART MUSEUM

 

On January 4, I went to the Menard Art Museum in Komaki City with my wife to see “Yozakura Bijin Zu” (A beauty under a night cherry tree) painted by Ohoi Katsushika, a daughter of an 18th century genius painter. We had watched an NHK TV program about it weeks before.

It is a picture of a beautiful woman writing a love letter with an ink brush beside a cherry tree under a starlit sky. She stands between a tall and low stone lanterns. The candle light from the tall one illuminates her face, hand, and the letter. The pale light from the other illuminates the skirt of her kimono. The clusters of cherry blossoms behind her back shine like pearls. The stars high above the dark trees shimmer serenely. The whole picture gives fantastic impression.

Hokisai is said to have commented that he was no match for her at painting beautiful women.

I will be 74 years old this year. I am diagnosed as having an irregular heartbeat and other diseases, but I want to continue:

(1) to write short stories both in English and Japanese, and

(2) to practice Jodo (Stick way), Japanese martial art.

　俳文の訳は以下の通り。This is the translation of my haibun into Japanese.

今日お墓参りをした。菊を供えてお参りを済ませると、隣の墓で女性がお祈りをしていた。その墓は６０年前に亡くなった少年の墓で、彼は野球観戦中に折れたバットがスタンドに飛んできて、彼にあたり亡くなったのだ。彼の墓が偶然松岡家の墓の隣に建てられたのである。

「こちら、山田守さんの墓ですね」

「はい」女性は驚いて返事をした。

「私の兄が、守さんの事故について話してくれたことがあります」と私は言った。

女性は守さんの甥の奥さんであった。守さんには会ったことはないが、今日たまたま親族の方に会うことができた。

転んでもただでは起きない TURN IT INTO PROFIT

転んでもただでは起きない

風邪をひいてこの二週間ほとんど寝ていた。東大寺や春日大社を二時間近く歩いたから引いたのだ。その日はそんなに寒くはなく、喫茶店やうどん店やレストランなどで何度も休憩したから、家に帰ったときはそんなに疲れたとは思わなかった。

ところが、翌朝、喉は痛いし、声はかれているし、身体がだるい。風邪の細菌が身体に既に入り込んでいて、弱みにつけ込んで暴れ始めたのだ。

お陰で、いろいろ欠席する羽目になった。古武道の杖道の稽古を二回、英語創作講座、英語短編読解講座、歴史講座、シェクスピア原書講座だ。

しかし、寝ていたおかげで、You-tubeで「老人と海」（英語と日本語）、カフカの「変身」、坂口安吾の「不良少年とキリスト」などを聞くことができた。風邪をひいたおかげだ。

TURN IT INTO PROFIT
 

I caught a cold and spent most of my day lying in bed for two weeks. The reason I picked up a cold is that I walked around Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Shrine for almost two hours. It was not a cold day and I took a break several times at a coffee shop, a noodle shop, and a restaurant. I didn’t feel tired when I came back home.
 

The next morning, however, my throat was sore and my voice was husky. I felt sick. The virus which I had had in my body got power and began to get wild.
 

I was absent from several classes, including two jodo martial art classes, an English creative writing class, a short story reading class, a history class, and a Shakespeare reading class.
 

However, I had a chance to listen to readings of many stories such as The Old Man and the Sea (both in English and Japanese), Kafka’s The Transformation, and Furyo-shonenn to kirisuto by Ango Sakaguchi on the U-Tube. I would not have listened to them if I had not had a cold.
