後悔先に立たず IT IS TOO LATE

　私は４８歳から７３歳まで、２５年間「神道夢想流杖道」という棒を使う武道を習ってきた。先生は６６歳で、杖道をはじめ武術、拳法、空手、柔術、体術、居合術、槍術、兵法術、古忍術、二刀術などの免許皆伝者だ。
杖術は、直径2.4センチ、長さ1.2メートルの棒が武器だが、この棒を使って敵の太刀に立ち向かうのだ。棒の使い方が少しでも狂うと指が切られることになる。勿論、首だって、足だって、体だって切られる。太刀に対して棒一本ではあるが、棒で相手の頭やこめかみを強打したり、目やミゾオチを突いたりする。
この２５年間、杖道の６０の型を習い、ほかに神道流剣術、一心流鎖鎌術、内田流短杖術、一角流十手術、伊勢ノ守流短剣術を習ってきたが何一つとして満足に武器を使うことができない。
昨日、先生が「明日から一年ほど稽古に来れなくなる。師範代に従って稽古しなさい」と言われた。先生はこのところ足を痛めて歩行用の杖をついていた。正座ができない。癌の手術もされて体が弱ってみえる。もしかすると、復帰できなくなるかもしれない。
後悔先に立たずだ。まだまだ習うべき技がいっぱいあるのに、やっと技をどう使うかが分かってきたのに、もう指導してもらうことができなくなってしまう。いつも先生自らが手本を示してくださって、同じ間違いでも、何度も何度も根気よく指導してくださった。どの指導も納得のいくもので、「そうか、だから棒（太刀）をこのように動かすのか」と何度思ったかしれない。
昨日「影」という種目の「左貫」という型の太刀の使い方の誤りを指摘された。
「相手の指を切ればいいのだから、太刀をそんなに深く切り込まない」
最短距離と最短時間で敵に打撃を与えるのだ。
残念ながら、これが最後の指導になるかもしれない。もっともっと真剣に先生の身体の動きを注視して、自分の身体に覚えさせておくべきだった。



NO USE CRYING OVER SPILT MILK
　　I have been practicing Japanese martial arts, jodo or technique of using a stick as a weapon for 25 years since I was 48 years old. My teacher is a 66-year-old master of various martial arts such as karate, judo, Iainuki (swordplay), spear techniques, warfare and ninjyutsu, and nito-ryu (two-sword techniques).
　　Jo is a long piece of wood, 1.2 meters long and 2.4 centimeters in diameter. You defend as well as attack your opponent with a jo stick. Even a slightest mistake in timing is fatal.
　　I have learned 60 styles of jodo techniques besides other techniques such as ken-jyutsu (swordplay), kusari-gama (sword and chain), tan-jo (short stick) and jitte (hooked truncheon), but I am not satisfied with my level of technique in any one of them.
　　Yesterday my teacher said, “I cannot teach you for about a year. You should practice jodo under the assistant teacher.” In addition to his recent operation for cancer, his leg has been injured and he cannot walk without a walking cane nor sit on his heels. I am afraid he cannot resume teaching jodo.
　　It is no use crying over spilt milk. I still have a lot of jodo techniques to learn. It was only recently that I thought I had learned the basic movement of jo. My teacher repeatedly corrected my jo movement. I have recently realized that every movement of jo has meaning.
　　Yesterday, my teacher pointed out my mistake in the movement of a sword. “You don’t have to move your sword so closely toward your opponent; all you need is just to cut his finger.”
You should try to attack your opponent as quickly as possible.
　　Yesterday’s instruction might be his last. I should have watched his movement more carefully and studied his techniques much more.

シンゴジラ 最低の映画 SHIN-GODZILLA ONE OF THE WORST

シンゴジラ　最低の映画

世間の評判につられて「シンゴジラ」を見てきたが、ひどい映画だ。

１．会議が多すぎ

内閣、自衛隊、東京都議会、警視庁、政府高官、対策本部等の会議が次から次へと出てきて、前半は対策会議で引きずられた。飽きるほど。肝心のゴジラは何所へやら。この映画のメッセージは組織内の人間葛藤か。

２．変なゴジラベビー

なんだあのおかしなゴジラの幼虫は？　可愛くしてあるが、いただけない。もったいぶってゴジラを登場させないつもりだろうが、ベビーゴジラは何の意義もない。カットすべきだ。

３．矛盾だらけ

自衛隊のロケット弾、アメリカ軍のミサイルが何百と打ち込まれてもびくともしないゴジラが、新幹線が足に当たり、ビルが倒れて、それでゴジラも倒れてしまう。あのように強いゴジラが、あんなに弱いとはお笑いだ。

４．タイミングが良すぎる

倒れたゴジラは口をバカーンと開けて、さあどうぞ、凝固剤を注入してください、と言わんばかり、薬剤の注入中は微動だにしない。口を開けててね、と打ち合わせがしてあったよう。注入が１００パーセント完了するなんてぇのはタイミングが良すぎる。現実離れしている。ハラハラドキドキがない。

５．感動がない。

ゴジラが現れて、凝固剤を注入されて、くたばる。なんというあほらしい話の展開だ。感動がない。１９５４年の第一作のゴジラは感動的だ。科学者が命を犠牲にしてゴジラをやっつけるんだから。シンゴジラは今はやりのポケモンGOだ。

６．イケメン男優におんぶ

ゴジラをやっつける長谷川博己がイケメンだから、「シンゴジラ」は人気があるのだ。映画の中身でなく、男優におんぶしているのだ。その証拠に「シンゴジラ」を女性だけの鑑賞会なるものがある。ゴジラ君もイケメンには負けるよね

 


SHIN-GODZILLA, ONE OF THE WORST

　　I saw Shin-Godzilla directed by Hideaki Anno. It was a much-talked-about movie, but it did not satisfy my expectations. It is one of the worst films that I have ever seen.

1. Too many conference scenes:
Most of the first half of the movie is spent describing how the Cabinet members, the government officials, the self-defense-forces officers, metropolitan government officials, and the UN Security Council members discuss how to destroy　the monster. I was tired of hearing discussion after discussion.

2. An unsuitable toddler Godzilla
A baby Godzilla appears at the beginning of the movie. It is sickening and creepy, and never attractive. It undergoes ecdysis. It may be the director’s idea to use the toddler but it does not suit a Godzilla film. A Full fledged Godzilla should appear at the outset of the movie.

3. Contradiction
Hundreds of self-defense-forces rocket bombs and dozens of the US missiles fail to injure Godzilla. However, it falls down on the ground when it is hit by unmanned bullet trains and collapsing skyscrapers. Isn’t this contradictory? The creature which survives missiles attacks succumbs to the falling building. Why is it so weak?

4. Timing was too good
Godzilla keeps its mouth wide open till all the planned freezing chemical material is inserted into its mouth. Why doesn’t it close the mouth and destroy the freezing operation machines?

5. No moving scene
The story is not moving. It is too simple: Godzilla destroys Tokyo; chemical substance is inserted into it; and it dies. The first Godzilla movie made in 1954 is moving. A scientist destroys Godzilla at the sacrifice of his life.

6. Thanks to a handsome actor
The movie has gained popularity not because of its quality but because of the handsome actor. The actor is so popular among women that even “Godzilla Screening for Women Only” has been carried out. Surely, the Godzilla doesn’t like it.

守さんの墓石 MAMORU'S TOMBSTONE

　昨日大垣に行く用事ができて、用事を済ませた後、お墓参りをした。
お盆の墓参りは都合で出来なかったので、ちょうど良い機会だと思って出かけた。
墓を掃除して、花を活けて、線香を焚いてお参りして、さあ帰ろうと思って隣の墓を見ると、中年の女性が墓参りに来ていた。隣の墓は私がよく知っている墓で、私が中学３年だったころ、大垣商業高校の野球部の生徒がバットに当たり亡くなるということが起こった。当時は大垣でも大きなニュースで、その亡くなった高校生の名前が〇〇守さんだった。
その後、守さんの墓が私の先祖代々の墓の通路を隔てた隣に建てられたのだ。真新しい墓石に「ＯＯ守乃墓、享年１７、昭和３３年」と彫られていた。その後、私は墓参りをするたびに守さんの墓を見て、事件のことを思い出していた。
ところが、昨日、その墓石の前で３０代の女性が墓参りをしていた。思わず私は「失礼ですが、その墓は〇〇守さんの墓ですね」と声をかけた。女性はびっくりしたように「はい」と答えた。
私が当時のことを話すと、女性は守さんの兄弟の孫に嫁いだ人であった。
「野球部の事故で亡くなったと聞いていましたが」と言われた。
別に私は個人的に守さんとは面識がないのだが、このように親族の方と守さんの「思い出話」ができたとは奇遇であった。年を取るのは嫌だけれど、こんな不思議な経験もできるのだと思った。

ENCOUNTER

　　I visited my ancestors’ grave today. I decorated the tombstone with chrysanthemums. When I stood up after praying, I saw a woman praying before a neighboring tombstone. It had been erected to commemorate the death of a boy, who was killed when a broken bat flew into the stands and hit him. The accident happened about 60 years ago when I was a small boy. His tombstone was coincidentally built near my ancestors’. It was engraved “Mamoru Yamada. Died at the age of 17 in 1958.”
　　“That is Mamoru Yamada’s tombstone, isn’t it?” I said to her.
　　“Yes,” she replied, surprised.
　　I told her about the incident. She was the wife of Yamada’s nephew. I have never met him, but today I had a chance to meet his relative.

加齢

今日大学時代の同級生に電話したら、「最近耳が遠くなって聞きにくい。もっと大きな声で言ってくれ」と言う。今まで電話でそんなことを言ったことがなかったのに、驚いた。相当大きな声で言っても、はっきり伝わらないのだ。何度もゆっくり、はっきり言ってやっと通じたようだ。

老化とは恐ろしいことだ。私は網膜前膜で物が歪んで見えるし、前立腺肥大で尿の出が悪くなったし、不整脈で薬を毎朝薬を飲んでいるし……。

死んでいくのだから仕方がないと言えば仕方がないけれど。目が見えるうちに見たいものを見て、聞こえるうちに聞きたいものを聞き、歩けるうちに行きたいところに行って、味がわかるうちにうまいものを食っておかないといけないなぁなんてケチなことを思うこと自体がなんか情けない。

秦の始皇帝も徳川家康も、父も祖父も、皆、誰しもこうだったのか。

ENJOY WHILE YOU CAN

 

The other day I telephoned a friend of mine from my university days. He said, “I can’t hear well. Please speak louder.” He had never said to me such a thing. I was surprised. I spoke in a loud voice, but still he could not hear me well. I repeated my words clearly and slowly till finally I made myself understood.
　　Aging is horrifying. I have difficulty in my eyesight because of the macula malfunction. I have slow urine flow. I take medicine every morning because have an irregular heart beat.
Everybody will die sooner or later. You can’t stop aging. I know. Therefore, I want to see, hear, and walk while I can. I want to eat delicious food while I have a palate.
　　Even First Qin Emperor in China and Shogunate Ieyasu Tokugawa were unable to avoid aging. Life is fleeting. Enjoy while you can.

昨日、ディズニーのＣＧ映画「ジャングルブック」を見た。荒筋は単純で、オオカミと黒豹に育てられた孤児モーグリが、敵の虎のシア・カーンと戦って勝つというもの。
　この映画のユニークな点は、密林、激流、岩山、滝など全ての映像がＣＧで描かれているという点だ。映像は本物そっくりで、ＣＧを使っていないのは全ての映像の中で少年モーグリだけだ。最も驚いたのは象、虎、黒豹、鹿、蛇、猿、オオカミ、サイ、ハリネズミなど多彩な動物で、その動物が口を動かして英語をしゃべるのだ。動物の口の動きと英語の発音の口の動きが一致していたからすごいと思った。
　こうなると、映画を作るのにもう動物も山も川も何もいらないわけで、映画制作のためにロケに出かける必要はなくなるわけだ。
　１９９３年のスピルバーグのＳＦ映画「ジュラシック・パーク」はＣＧで恐竜を登場させたが、実際の映画はハワイのオアフ島の岩の多い原野で撮影された。その点を考えると「ジャングル・ブック」はＣＧ映画時代の前触れだ。
　１３年後の今日、映画を作るためにスタジオから外に出なくて済むのだ。ＣＧで海やら山や、台風や、電車や戦闘機をスタジオ内で製作できるのだ。
　これを突き詰めれば、男優も女優もいらなくなる。だって、監督の望むように演技をする理想的な映画スターを製作することができるからだ。

 

A CG FILM, THE JUNGLE BOOK

I saw a CG film, The Jungle Book produced by Walt Disney Pictures yesterday.
The story is simple: an orphaned boy Mowgli, who is raised by wolves and a black panther, fights with his enemy, a tiger named Shere Khan, and defeats him.
What is unusual about the film is that all the images throughout the film, such as the vast jungle, rough rivers, rocky mountains, and water falls were drawn by computers. They looked so real. The only exception was the boy. What surprised me most were the images of various kinds of animals such as elephants, a tiger, a black panther, deer, a bear, a snake, monkeys, wolves, rhinoceroses, hedgehogs. They all moved their mouths when they spoke English. The movement of their mouths was coherent with the pronunciation of the English sound.
So, you don’t need any animals, or mountains, or rivers to make a film. You can make a film without going to locations for filming.
Jurassic Park used CG technique to create dinosaurs, but the film was made in a rocky field in Oahu Island in Hawaii. The film heralded the CG age. Today, 13 years later, you don’t have to go out of a studio to make a film. You can create the sea, mountains, typhoons, trains, and fighter jets in the studio.
Ultimately speaking, you don’t need any actors or actresses, because you can produce ideal stars that move exactly as the director wants them to move.

プリウス窃盗犯逮捕 ARREST OF CAR THEIF

今日、天白警察署から電話があった。昨年秋に私のプリウスを盗んだ犯人が捕まったという。
犯人は５０歳で、窃盗した車はプリウスやハリアなど約３０台。二人組。盗んだ車はそれを買い取る組織があり、そこに売った。犯人は裁判中で、刑務所行きは確実とのこと。
捕まっても、車が見つかっても、今はどうしようもない。犯人に弁償せよとも言えないし、憤まんやるかたない。まあ、捕まったことで良しとするしかない。交通事故で大けがをしたり、テロで殺されるよりはましだから。何とも割り切れないところが残るが。

ARREST OF CAR THEIF

Today the Tempaku Police telephoned and told me that the thief of my Prius had been arrested. The policeman said, “The thief was 50 years old and has stolen it with his accomplice and about 30 other vehicles including Harriers and Lexuses. They have sold the stolen cars to brokers and are now on trial. They will be jailed.”

Although the thieves have been arrested, I can’t order them to compensate me for my car. How frustrating! It may be good news that they had been caught, but my Prius won’t come back to me.

To have my car stolen is better than to meet a serious traffic accident or to be attacked by terrorists. I know, but emotion is stronger than reason.

公園が乗っ取られた A HIJACKED PARK

昨日午後４時半ごろ鶴舞図書館に行った。鶴舞の地下鉄駅を降りて驚いた。スマホを持った若者が、駅から公園に出る地下道に溢れている。階段を上がってまた驚いた。公園一帯はポケモンゴーの若者だらけ。いつもなら公園は樹木が茂って、閑静で、空気も新鮮で、散歩にちょうどいいのに、なんということだ。そこら中に若者がいる。園内の道路と言わず、木立の間と言わず、図書館の玄関前までスマホ人間がいっぱいいるのだ。
今までは鶴舞公園は心の落ち着くところであったが、こう若者が多くては落ち着くどころかお祭り騒ぎだ。変なものが流行ってきた。なんというはた迷惑な。

A HIJACKED PARK

 

I went to Tsurumai Library around 4:30 in the afternoon yesterday. When I got off the subway train at Tsurumai Station and began to walk toward an exit leading up to ground, I was surprised to see many young people walking, looking at smartphones in their hands. I was more surprised when I stood on the ground because I saw a lot of people in Tsurumai Park. Almost all of them, some walking, others standing, were looking at the gadget. They were apparently absorbed in the newly popular Pokemon Go game. Usually the park is full of tall green trees, quiet, with fresh air, and suitable for taking a walk, but that day the scene was quite different. No quietness, but restlessness. Pokemon people occupied the park streets, the space around the spring, and promenades among trees. About 15 Pokemon people were hanging around even in front of the library entrance gate.
　　Tsurumai Park used to be a nice place to take a walk and collect yourself, but now it is a place for festivity and gaiety. “Pokemon Go” is an unwelcome intrusion.
