It was around 10: 30 p.m. on September 30. I had just finished writing a short story for a contest whose due date was that day. I drove to Mizuho Post Office on a stormy night owing to a typhoon. Reaching the post office, I pulled the door, but it did not open. It was strange, I thought. Why was it closed? Was it because it was Sunday or because the typhoon was approaching? It was usually open until midnight. I found a notice on the front door, which read: Closed after 22:00. I was staggered. I had worked frantically that day so that I would be in time for the due date. I thought of going to a different post office.
I returned home around 11 o’clock. I had only one hour until the end of the day. I checked the Minami Post Office on the Internet. It read: open until midnight. I telephoned the office, but they did not answer. I again drove to the office. Reaching there, I saw light in the building. I was relieved. When I entered it, I saw a post office employee at a desk in the entrance hall.
“The office is closed,” he said.
“You are a post office worker, aren’t you?” I said. “I need to have this letter postmarked today.”
“I am sorry. Today is a special day and this office is closed from 10:00 p.m. to 12:00 p.m.”
“Why is it closed?”
“You see, the post offices are being reunited. The unification operation will last until midnight. The postal work will commence after midnight.”
“I went to the Mizuho Post Office despite this typhoon. It was closed, and so I drove here. I have to have this postmarked today. Please help me.”
Thanks to my desperate pleading, he opened the office door, went inside, and talked with another worker. He appeared with postal stamps. It cost 240 yen. I took out my wallet and tried to pay for the stamps.
“I can’t take your money” he said. “The office is not supposed to be open at this time.”
I did not pay the postal fee and succeeded in getting the postmark. It was 11:45. I hope my story will win a prize.
(Two days later I asked a postal worker about the unification. She said that the postal business department and the delivery service department had recently united. The two departments had been separated because of the postal service privatization years before.)

Keene Donald

DONALD KEENE
I watched a TV documentary program on Donald Keene, who recently became a naturalized citizen of Japan. I admire him for his accomplishment in introducing Japan to the world through the translation of Japanese literature, classical and modern. His love of Japan was so intense that he even studied and performed a traditional Kyogen short play on stage. What I admire about him most is the time when he became a Japanese citizen. Immediately after the Tohoku Great Earthquake took place in March 2011, a number of foreigners living in Japan made an exodus for fear of the radiation, but the 90-year-old Japanologist acquired his Japanese citizenship just a year after the disaster. This shows how much he loved Japan.
The program showed his recent trip to India and Africa. In India he visited several tourist spots including the Taj Mahal. In Africa he enjoyed watching wild animals like elephants, giraffes, and lions. Surprisingly, he traveled to these places at the age of 90.
As for myself, I am nearly 70 years old. I was beginning to think that I would have to give up traveling abroad because of my advanced age and weakened body. But this program encouraged me greatly. 90 minus 70 equals 20. I have 20 more years to go abroad.Hurrah!
Thank you, Keene-san.

MIRACLE WATER

I am reading "The Great Tang Records on the Western Regions," a narrative of Xuanzang's nineteen-year journey from Chang'an to India between 626 and 645. When he stayed in Taxila, near the present Islamabad, Pakistan, he heard the following folk tale:「タキシラは国の要地です。

King Ashoka and his Queen had a son named Kunala, who was noble and charitable. When the queen died, the king remarried a woman, who was selfish, unwise, and prurient. She hated Kunala. She contrived a plot and said to the king:
“Taxila is an important province for the country. A reliable man should govern it. Kunala is famed for his courage and virtue. No other man except him is suitable for the position. I suggest that you send him there."
Not knowing her scheme, the king consented to her. He summoned Kunala and said,
“My son, I have inherited my ancestor’s land. My source of anxiety is to lose it. To my disappointment, riots sometimes occur in Taxila. So, I order you to keep them down and govern the area. When I issue my orders, I will put my teeth marks on them. So examine the marks for verification. Since the marks are my teeth, there can’t be a fake.”
Kunala went to Taxila and ruled it. Years passed, but his stepmother still hated Kunala. She again schemed a conspiracy. She forged a fake decree which accused Kunala, sealed it with earthenware, and pushed the king’s teeth into it while he was sleeping.

The letter reached Taxila. When Kunala’s aides read the letter, he turned sorrowful. Kunala asked what the trouble was. The aide answered:
“The letter orders you to gouge out your eyes, leave the castle, and live in the mountains. I doubt the letter’s authenticity. I beseech you to send someone to confirm it. It will not be too late to obey your father after the confirmation.”
Kunala said, “The letter is sealed with his teeth marks. So, this is genuine. I can’t reject his order.” He ordered his man to gouge out his eyes.

Years passed. Kunala and his wife lived a life of a beggar and roamed about the world. One cold day, they reached the palace, dizzy with hunger. His wife said, “Here is the palace. Once you were a prince and now a beggar. Why not offer an apology to the king?”
They sneaked their way into the king’s stable. During the night, Kunala sang a song, so sorrowful and tearful, accompanied by his wife’s harp. The wind conveyed the song to the king, who happened to be strolling in a castle tower. It sounded so lamentable that he said to himself, mystified, “How strange! The song sounds like my son’s, and the harp sounds like my daughter-in-law’s. Why are they here?”
Soon his men found and took them to the king. At the sight of his eyeless son, the king asked, sorrow-stricken,
“Why? Who on earth has hurt you? How can I see my people’s suffering if I cannot see my son’s? Oh, heaven, I regret I have lost good judgment.”
Kunala apologized in tears, “Heaven has punished me because I have been an ungrateful child. I received your order on such and such day. I did not protest but obeyed you.”
The king found out his second wife’s conspiracy and executed her.

There lived a great Buddhist monk named Gosha. King Ashoka took Kunala to the monk, told how his son became blind, and asked him to restore his sight. Gosha listened to him and made an announcement to the public, “I am going to give a sermon tomorrow. So, everyone, come to the temple with a bowl.”
The next day, men and women, young and old, gathered at the temple, a bowl in their hands. The priest talked about The Twelve Karma. Everyone wailed and shed tears in the bowl. After preaching, the priest gathered all the tears into one bowl and said to Kunala, “If my teaching is right, the tears will cure your blindness.”
Kunala washed his eyes with the tears and, strange to say, his eyesight recovered.

A Chinese TV drama “Three Kingdoms”
ended on August 13. It consisted of 95 installments and was broadcast from
Monday through Friday on the BS Fuji channel for about 5 months. I enjoyed each
episode to my heart’s content.
The drama depicted the conflicts among the three kingdoms around
180-280 AD: Wei (魏), Shu (蜀), and Wu (吳), led by Cao Cao(曹操),
Liu Bei (劉備), Sun Quan(孫権)respectively.
Chuko Liang Kongming (諸葛亮孔明), Zhou Yu (周瑜),
Zhang Fei (張飛), and Guan Yu (関羽)
were the super heroes in the story. I particularly loved the famous scenes such
as “The Battle of the Red Cliff,” “Beheading Ma Su (馬謖)
in Tears,” “The Empty Castle Trap,” and “Living Zhongda (仲達)
Flees at the Sight of Dead Kongming (孔明).”
When I saw the episode when Kongming (孔明)
died of illness at the Battle of Wuzhang Plains (五丈原),
I remembered the song I had learned in my high school history class more than
50 years ago. The song’s name was “Falling
Star in Autumn Wind in Wuzhang Plains (星落秋風五丈原).”I
liked Sima Yi (司馬懿) in the drama, who played the
role of a cautious but crafty schemer.
On the whole I don’t think I will see a more exciting drama than
“Three Kingdoms.”

MICHELLE YEOH
I remember a kung-fu movie “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon,” in
which she demonstrates breathtaking kung-fu martial art techniques. I thought
she was well trained in kung-fu, but she said she had never practiced it.
When I watched her
interview , I understood why she was so skilful at the martial art. She
was a ballet dancer at the age of four. She moved to London to study it at the
Royal Academy as a teenager, but she gave up ballet because of injuries. Her training
of ballet helped her to be an action film actress. She said the flow of kung-fu
movements and that of ballet were similar.
I borrowed the DVD, "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon" to
see how she performs the kung-fu techniques.
THE LADY

I saw “The Lady," the story of Aung San Suu Kyi. It taught me
a lot about her and her country, Myanmar.
At the outset of the movie, I was shocked to see her father, the
founder of modern-day Burma, get assassinated. The assassin shoots several
bullets into his body. The camera then shows a little girl, Suu Kyi, taking a
nap in a bamboo chair in a garden. The bloody scene makes a striking contrast
with her peaceful face.
After she grows up, she makes a strenuous campaign for democracy.
Her party, the National League for Democracy, wins in the general election, but
the military does not accept the results. They kill many rioting citizens, committing
hideous atrocity. It puts Suu Kyi under house arrest. She endures some 20 years
of confinement before she gets freedom.
The film is twofold. Besides dealing with Suu Kyi’s pressured
life, it depicts her husband’s support. During her arrest, he works hard so
that she can win the Nobel Peace Prize, which he thinks will put pressure on the
military. She wins it in 1991, but is not able to attend the award ceremony. I
admire his devotion to supporting Suu Kyi although he is suffering from cancer.
His anger not being able to fly into Burma and her agony about not being able
to fly to her dying husband moved me.
“The Lady” is a success because it will win a world wide support
for her. Usually a hero’s movie is made posthumously, but since the movie has
been made while she is alive, it will be an effective engine for the
realization of democracy in Myanmar.

DOLITTLE NAGOYA
PICTURE 1
PICTURE 2
Picture 1 shows a path in my neighborhood. It runs between a fence and a bicycle parking lot. There is nothing in front of the fence, but up until 20 days ago, about 30 construction barricades (picture 2) were lined up along the fence. Why?
About eight years ago, there was not a parking lot there. Bicycle riders parked their bicycles alongside the fence disorderly, obstructing the pedestrians. Therefore, Nagoya City put the barricades along the fence to prevent them from parking their bicycles there, but they continued to park them ignoring the barricades. The path became a mess, congested with dozens of barricades and bicycles. About a year later, the city built a bicycle parking lot with a notice that bicycle riders must park their bicycles in the lot and that the violators’ bicycles would be towed away. As a result, they began to park their bicycles in the lot. That means the barricades were no longer necessary, but they were left there for another several years.
I used to walk along the path to go to school every morning. The rusty, half-broken, and paint-eroded iron frames spoiled the beauty of the vicinity and obstructed the pedestrians. I expected the authorities would get rid of them soon, but they did not. I became impatient and sent an e-mail asking them to remove them. About ten days later when I took a walk along the path, I found no barricades.
The city authorities finally did what they should have done long before.
