A DREADFUL DREAM

A DREADFUL DREAM

The other day I met one of my friends. She had retired from teaching English several years before. She said, “I sometimes dream a horrible dream where I have to teach an English lesson without any preparation.” Obviously even a skillful teacher can’t teach well without enough preparation. However, she had to teach without it. In her dream she was forced to go to the classroom wondering what or how to teach. When she is about to enter the classroom, she wakes up.
Listening to her dream, I told her about my dream that was similar to hers. I said, “Once in a while I dream a dream where I have to teach mathematics to my students.” I am not good at math at all. I felt pain during the math class in my high school days. Anyway, I have to teach math in the dream. I wonder what or how to teach math. I am under extreme pressure when I open the door of the classroom, when I wake up.
Why do she and I, both retired teachers, have to dream such a dreadful dream?

A PARAGON OF BEAUTY, TOSHISHUN

A PARAGON OF BEAUTY, TOSHISHUN

Recently I read “Toshishun” written by Akutagawa Rynosuke. I had read it in my childhood. At that time I thought Tekkanshi was contradictory. This time I again thought so.

I do not understand Tekkanshi’s intention. He tells Toshishun that he will make Toshishun a sennin, a man with magical power, if he keeps quiet whatever happens to him. While Toshishun sits in meditation, fierce beasts, demons, and warriors try to kill him, but he keeps silent. Finally the ogres in hell torture his parents so severely that he finally utters, “Mother!” At this moment, he returns to reality. Tekkanshi says to Toshishun, “If you had not uttered a word at that time, I would have killed you.”

Tekkanshi is not sincere. He does not have any intention to make Toshishun a sennin. If Toshishun keeps silent looking at his poor parents, he will be killed. Instead, if he utters a word, he can’t become a sennin. Either way, he can’t become a sennin. This is a crook. I detest Tekkanshi.

Akutagawa made this story based on an ancient Chinese story. At the end of the original story, Toshishun is changed into a most beautiful woman and bears a baby. When her child is tortured, she screams, “No!” Suddenly he comes back to reality. He fails to become a sennin and his teacher also fails to become one.
Akutagawa’s story puts too much stress on the virtue of being a faithful son to his parents. He distorted the original story and made it worse. I do not appreciate his Toshishun at all.

THE FORBIDDEN PLANET" AND "TEMPEST"

"THE FORBIDDEN PLANET" AND "TEMPEST"
The other day when I attended a class on Shakespeare, the teacher told the students that the classic movie, “The Forbidden Planet” was made based on “Tempest.” I had seen the film more than half a century ago, probably at the age of 15 or 16.
At first, I wondered how the two works were related with each other, but soon I realized that the old man in the film was Prospero and that his daughter in the film was Milanda. Furthermore, I thought the faithful robot in the film might be Ariel.
There are some more similarities between the film and the play. In the movie the old man fights with an unknown and unseen enemy that tries to destroy his space station. (I remember how the footsteps are printed on the station soil as the monster approaches it step by step.) It breaks the barrier that surrounds the station and melts the thick iron door to penetrate it. (I remember the central part of the door turns bright and white due to the melting), but actually, the energy the enemy uses is sent from the old man himself. In “Tempest,” Prospero performs magic and tries to destroy his enemy. Another similarity can be found between the old man’s daughter and Milanda. Neither of them knows any other human beings except for their fathers. In both movies, a young man approaches the girl, who falls in love with him. (I vividly remember the scene in the film where the man teaches the girl how to kiss.)
I cannot remember how the film ended. I want to see “The Forbidden Planet” and “Tempest” again to compare them.
Living for more than 70 years has rewarded me with a surprising gift.

(I am planning to go and see a musical “RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET” that will be performed at Chikusa Playhouse on December 5th, 6th & 7th.)

WHY DOES'NT THE PLOLICE ASK PERSONS WITH SUPERNATURAL POWERS

WHY DOES'NT THE PLOLICE ASK PERSONS WITH SUPERNATURAL POWERS FOR HELP

I watched a TV program featuring two women who had supernatural powers. One woman, named Lolly, told the California police where Linda, a missing ex-cheerleader, was by just looking at her picture. When the police combed the forest she had pinpointed, they found Linda’s dead body. The other woman named Gabriel Klof also performed supernatural powers when she solved a savage incident in which four members of a family had been killed in Greenough Village in Australia. She communicated with a murdered mother who appeared before her. The mother told the murderer’s name and the whereabouts of her dead body.
According to the TV reporter, the program was made based on facts. If there are such women with such supernatural powers, why doesn’t the Japanese government ask them to find Megumi Yokota, an abducted 13-year-old girl by North Korea 37 years ago? The Hygo Prefecture Police should ask the women to give the whereabouts of the 6-year-old girl who has been missing for more than 10 days till today.
I have heard several such super persons are employed in the FBI. Why doesn’t the Japanese police ask them to help them?

HEI, INAZO, RECENTLY YOU ARE....

NITOBE INAZO'S "BUSHIDO"

NITOBE INAZO'S  "BUSHIDO"
You Can't Read Three Brothers' Seppuku Scene without Tears

The following passage is a quote form "Bushido" written by Nitobe Inazo.

"When they were all seated in a row for final despatch, Sakon turned to the youngest and said--'Go thou first, for I wish to be sure that thou doest it aright.' Upon the little one's replying that, as he had never seen seppuku performed, he would like to see his brothers do it and then he could follow them, the older bothers smiled between their tears:--'Well said, little fellow! So canst thou well boast of being our father's child.' When they had placed him between them, Sakon thrust the daggar into the left side of his abdomen and said--'Look brother! Dost understand now? Only, don't push the daggar too far, lest thou fall back. Lean forward, rather, and keep thy knees well composed.' Naiki did likewise and said to the boy--'Keep thine eyes open or else thou mayst look like a dying woman. If thy daggar feels anything within and thy strength fails, take courage and double thy effort to cut across.' The chlid looked from one to the other, and, when both had expired, he calmly half denuded himself and followed the example set him on either hand."

2014 GODZILLA, UGLINESS ITSLEF

2014 GODZILLA, UGLINESS ITSLEF

I was disappointed to see “Godzilla,” the  2014 movie directed by Gareth Edwards. It was a chunk of confusion, boredom, and ugliness. It lacks human drama.

Confusion:
I don’t understand why the director used three monsters: two “Mutos” (mantis-like monsters resembling the one in the 1979 film “Alien”) and Godzilla. The two Mutos fight against Godzilla. Why do they have to fight? That makes the movie confusing. Mutos are nothing but a hindrance to the development of the plot. One single monster, Godzilla, could make the movie more exciting and entertaining. Too many cooks spol the broth.

Indirectness:
Since the Mutos and Godzilla fight against each other, the audience’s attention focuses on which side will win. They feel as if they were watching a boxing match. Since Godzilla’s attack is directed at the Mutos, and not to human beings, the audience is not directly involved in the film. The monsters are in a “remote place” from the audience. Godzilla should attack human beings, not the weird mantis-like monsters. The Mutos are a hindrance.

Boredom:
The film is boring because the battle between the Mutos and Godzilla continues for a tremendously long time. They fight repeatedly and endlessly. The battle scenes occupy more than half of the movie. Furthermore, the first half of the film is spent to arouse fear on the part of the audience. The audience has to wait too long before they see a monster (disappointingly, not Godzilla but a Muto). Ten minutes is enough for evoking a sense of dread in the audience. Keeping a rubber cord stretched too long will break it.

Patchwork:
Godzilla is a patchwork of fearful scenes from historical incidents. During the fight between the monsters, fighter planes crash into skyscrapers. This is an imitation of the 9.11 disaster in New York. It also shows the tsunami scene where the sea water flows into the San Francisco streets. This is an imitation of the 3. 11 tsunami disaster in Japan. The film also imitates the sound effect in a 1968 SF film, "2001: A Space Odyssey." While Ford Brody is parachuting down, the audience hears the loud noise of his breathing. The breathing noise is used in the last scene of "2001: A Space Odyssey." As with anything, imitation lacks originality and does not excite the audience.

No protagonist:
Who is the protagonist of the movie? Probably it is Ford Brody, but he does not play a major role in the film. He is an explosive ordnance disposal technician, but his skill is not used well. At first, I thought Joe Brody was the main character, but he dies in an early stage of the film. Dr. Ishiro Serizawa, a Japanese scientist, does not play a significant role. He is just a decoration to add a taste of Japan to the film.

Bad Ending:
Godzilla returns back into the sea without any apparent injury. When I saw Godzilla lying on the ground motionless toward the end of the film, I thought he was dead. I wondered how he was killed because the film did not show how Godzilla was “fatally” attacked. Suddenly, however, Godzilla is walking into the sea in the end of the film. How has Godzilla recovered? How has he gained power? This is incomprehensible. I say it is a cheap trick that betrays the audience.

No Humanity
There is no moving scene. It just shows destruction after destruction. The monsters’ fight destroys buildings, railroads, bridges, and roads one after another. I was moved when I saw the 1954 Japanese "Godzilla" where Dr. Serizawa sacrifices his life to reduce Godzilla to bones. Moreover, the original Godzilla appeals to the audience against nuclear weapons. The 2014 Godzilla does not have any message.

I did not enjoy the film; it was ugliness itself.
