 生きるべきか、死ぬべきか

確か高校生時代であったが、「スタートレック」というアメリカのテレビドラマがあった。耳の長いスポック博士が登場するSFドラマである。

今日、シェクスピアの講座を受けていて吃驚した。「未発見の国」というエピソードで、スポック博士側の惑星連盟軍とクリゴン帝国が戦争を止め、和平の会を開く。グラスに青い飲み物を注ぐと、クリゴン帝国の王が、「未発見の国。未来」と発する。これはシェクスピアからの一節である。そこで、話題がシェクスピアに移ると、クリンゴン帝国の将軍が「シェイクスピアは、原語のクリンゴン語で読まねば真価がわからない」という。なんと、To be or not to be.That is the question.は、もともとはクリンゴン帝国の言葉を英語に翻訳したものだという。

何億光年の遥か先の星々の帝国でハムレットの作品は生まれたというのだ。なんという発想。スタートレックを書いた著者に感服した。

ちなみに、クリンゴン語で、 To be or not to be. That is the question.はTaH pagh taHbe, DaH mu’tlheghvam vlquelnIS.だそうだ。

To be or not to be

I’m pretty sure it was back in my high‑school days that an American TV drama called Star Trek was on the air. It was a science‑fiction series featuring Dr. Spock, the man with the long ears.

Today, during a Shakespeare lecture, I was astonished. In the episode The Undiscovered Country, the Federation forces on Spock’s side and the Klingon Empire decide to stop fighting and hold peace talks. When the blue drink is poured into each one’s glass, the king of the Klingon Empire says, “The undiscovered country— the future.” This line actually comes from Shakespeare.

Then the topic shifts to Shakespeare, and a Klingon general declares, “You have not experienced Shakespeare until you have read him in the original Klingon.” To my amazement, To be or not to be. That is the question. is said to be originally a Klingon phrase that was translated into English.

So Hamlet was supposedly born in the distant empires of stars billions of light‑years away. What an idea! I’m truly impressed by the imagination of the writers of Star Trek.
