「禁断の惑星」と「テンペスト」 "THE FORBIDDEN PLANET" AND "TEMPEST"

「禁断の惑星」と「テンペスト」

 

 　先日、シェクスピア講座に出たところ、講師が「禁断の惑星」と言う映画は「テンペスト」を基にしていると言われた。私はこの映画を５０年以上前、１５か１６歳ごろに見たことがある。
　始め、この二つがどのように関連しているのか分からなかったが、映画に出てくる老人は「テンペスト」のプロスペロで、老人の娘はミランダということに気がついた。さらに、老人の忠実なロボットはエリアルではないかと思った。
　この映画と戯曲にはそのほかに似た点がいろいろある。映画では老人は、宇宙基地を破壊しようとする正体不明の敵と戦う。（目に見えない敵が基地に近づくとき、足跡が一歩一歩、地面についたのを覚えている）　敵は基地を囲んでいる鉄条網を破り、基地の鉄製の厚い扉を溶かそうとする。（扉の真ん中部分が溶け出して白熱に光る場面があった）　実は、敵が使っているエネルギーは、老人自身が敵に供給しているのだ。「テンペスト」では、プロスペロが魔法を使って敵を滅ぼそうとする。もう一つの類似点は老人の娘とミランダに見られる。老人の娘もミランダという娘も、自分の父親以外に、人間に会ったことがない。映画でも戯曲でも、若者が現れて娘に近づき、娘は恋に陥る。（今でもはっきり覚えているのは若者が娘にキスの仕方を教えている場面だ）
　映画の結末は覚えていないが、「禁断の惑星」と「テンペスト」をもう一度見て比較したい。
　７０年生きていると、びっくりするようなことが分かって面白い。

"THE FORBIDDEN PLANET" AND "TEMPEST" 

The other day when I attended a class on Shakespeare, the teacher told the students that the classic movie, “The Forbidden Planet” was made based on “Tempest.” I had seen the film more than half a century ago, probably at the age of 15 or 16.
　　At first, I wondered how the two works were related with each other, but soon I realized that the old man in the film was Prospero and that his daughter in the film was Milanda. Furthermore, I thought the faithful robot in the film might be Ariel.
　　There are some more similarities between the film and the play. In the movie the old man fights with an unknown and unseen enemy that tries to destroy his space station. (I remember how the footsteps are printed on the station soil as the monster approaches it step by step.) It breaks the barrier that surrounds the station and melts the thick iron door to penetrate it. (I remember the central part of the door turns bright and white due to the melting), but actually, the energy the enemy uses is sent from the old man himself. In “Tempest,” Prospero performs magic and tries to destroy his enemy. Another similarity can be found between the old man’s daughter and Milanda. Neither of them knows any other human beings except for their fathers. In both movies, a young man approaches the girl, who falls in love with him. (I vividly remember the scene in the film where the man teaches the girl how to kiss.)
　　I cannot remember how the film ended. I want to see “The Forbidden Planet” and “Tempest” again to compare them.
　　Living for more than 70 years has rewarded me with a surprising gift.
