TV Broadcast of the Opening of the Asian Athletics Meeting

The following is a letter to the editor of the Chunichi Newspaper. 

The Asian Athletics Meeting was held in Nagoya on September 19, 2026, with about 11,000 athletes participating from 45 countries and regions. His Majesty the Emperor formally declared the opening of this national event.

I am a Nagoya City resident living near the Mizuho Athletic Arena. For nearly two years, I had to take a detour whenever I walked along the Yamazaki River because of construction work for the new riverbanks and the new arena. I endured the inconvenience and told myself, “It can’t be helped. Everything is for the success of the athletic meeting.”

However, on the very day of the opening ceremony, I was shocked to learn that the Asian Athletic Meeting was not broadcast on television. Why did NHK—the national broadcaster that collects viewing fees from almost all residents of Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, and indeed Japan—fail to air such an important national event? Moreover, none of the five commercial television stations in Nagoya broadcast it either. I felt disappointed and angry.

The governor of Aichi Prefecture serves as president of the organizing committee, and the mayor of Nagoya City serves as vice president. They must have known in advance that no television station planned to broadcast the event, yet they took no action. I hope they will fulfill their accountability and explain clearly why the broadcast failed.

 冷蔵庫騒動

 

先日我家の冷蔵庫が午前6時頃にピーと言う音を出し、鳴り止まなくなった。よく冷蔵庫を開けっぱなしにしておくと、ピー、ピー、ピー、と鳴り、「扉が開けっぱなしですよー」と教えてくれる。

しかし、今、鳴っている音はピーーーーーと耳をつんざく音で、扉を締めても、野菜入れや冷凍庫の抽斗を、きちんと閉じても鳴っている。高音でうるさい。気が狂いそうだ。どうしたら止まるか、とchat GPTに訊いた。

「扉をきちんと閉めましたか」「野菜入れや冷、凍庫の抽斗を締めましたか」などの問いがあり、「全部しまっている」と答えたら、製氷機の容器をきちんと奥まで入れてあるか」と訊く。入れてあると答えると「冷蔵庫の操作パネルの写真を送れ」という。写真を撮って送ると、「冷蔵」のボタンを長押ししてください」と答えた。長押ししても止まらない。Chat GPTとあれこれやっても埒が明かない。

冷蔵庫のパンフレットを見ると、日立製で、10年前に買った冷蔵庫だ。パンフレットによると冷蔵庫の寿命は10年から15年と書いてあり、故障すると音が出っ放しになることもあると書いてある。

仕方がないので、エディオンで12万ほどの冷蔵庫を買うことにして、金を払った。在庫があり、明日配達するという。

あと一日、頭がどうかなりそうな音を我慢すれば、平和な生活に戻れると思い、晩飯もそこそこに済ませ、女房と私は、台所の部屋を閉め切り、別の部屋で寝た。

明朝も鳴っていた。耳栓を嵌めて、冷蔵庫の中身を全部取り出して、配達を待った。

午後一時頃、配送の人が二人来た。相変わらず鳴りづめである。配達人が台所に来て、一人が冷蔵庫を少し前に移動した。もう一人の人が「これですよ」と言って、冷蔵庫の隣の食器入れの上に置いてあった目覚まし時計のスイッチを切った。

急に静かになった。何の音も聞こえない。二日振りの静寂。心の平安。

配達してくれた人には申し訳ないが、新しい冷蔵庫を買わないと伝えた。まだ五年は使える。配達料を払いますと言うと、「いいですよ。キャンセルにしておきますから」と、帰って行った。玄関で何度も「ありがとうございました」とお礼を言った。なんて親切な人たちだ。

代金は戻って来た。配達の方々、エディオン様、有難うございました。
