握手を求めるトルコの子達

　

　

　トルコ人が日本人に対して親しみを感じているということは知っていたが、実際トルコに行って子供たちがとても親日的であるのに驚いた。この親日関係は一世紀以上前に築かれたようだ。
　1980年にトルコの軍艦エルトゥールル号が和歌山県沖で沈没したとき、日本人が命懸けで69人の乗組員を救助した。翌月、トルコ兵は日本の軍艦でイスタンブールに搬送された。この事件がトルコの教科書に載っているそうだ。トルコの子達は事件のことを学校で勉強するため、日本人に対して特別な感情を抱いているのかもしれない。

 　私達はあちこちでトルコの子供達に歓待された。トルコ国家の創立者のアタチュルク霊廟では、１４歳前後子供達に取り囲まれ、一緒に写真を取りたいと言われた。目が好奇心で輝き、にこにこしている。二三人の子が私と一緒に写真を撮った。女房は女の子にハグされて両方の頬にキスされた。別れるときに子供達は思いっきり握手をしてきた。

　コンヤのインジェミナーレ神学校に行ったとき、女房は１０人ほどの男子学生に囲まれて、顔がほころび、とても愉快そうだった。

　トルコ兵を救助した和歌山県の人達は、自分たちのした事がこのように実を結ぶとは思ってもみなかったことだろう。

　　I was amazed at the friendliness of Turkish children. I had heard that they were friendly to Japanese people because they study at school about the Japanese people’s devotion when they rescued 69 Turks from a sunken Turkish warship, the Ertugrul, off the coast of Wakayama Prefecture in 1890. A month later, all survivors were transported back to Istanbul aboard Japanese battleships. Since then, Japan and Turkey have kept a friendly mutual relationship.　　　　　

　　Our tourist group encountered friendly Turkish children at several occasions.For example, when we visited the mausoleum of Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey, we met about a dozen children around 14 years old, who surrounded us with curious and smiling eyes. They wanted to take our photographs together with them. I had my photograph taken. My wife was even hugged by a girl and kissed on both cheeks. When we were departing, they shook our hands enthusiastically.

　　When we visited the İnce Minareli Museum in Konya, my wife was surrounded by several Turkish high school boys and had her picture taken with them. She beamed from ear to ear. I had never seen her smile so happily.

　　The people who rescued the Turks would be glad that their deeds have yielded much fruit.
