ROALD DAHL
I am now reading The Witches written by Roald Dahl, a British novelist and short story writer (1916-1990). He wrote Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which was made into a film.
The Witches is one of the most entertaining children’s stories I have ever read. It is full of humor, excitement, and adventures. Roald Dahl knows children’s psycology thoroughly. He knows how to lead the reader to identify himself with the protagonist. I admire him for his rich imagination that produces endless funny and surprising episodes in his books.
His English is not so difficult. I enjoy his writing style. By reading a lot of his novels and short stories, I want to improve my writing to his level.
I was especially fascinated by the way The Grand High Witch in The Witches speaks: “I demand maximum rrree-sults! So here are my orders! My orders are that every single child in this country shall be rrrubbed out, sqvashed, sqvirted, sqvittered and frrrittered before I come here again in vun year’s time!” As you see, she can’t pronounce “R” and “W” sounds well. That makes the story all the more funny.
