カンボジアで「時そば」

　昨日（２９日）、教え子の忘年会があり参加した。集まった１２名は４１歳で、私は彼らが中学２年生のとき英語を教えた。その内の一人、S君はこんな話をしてくれた。
「国際協力機構(JICA)のスタッフとしてカンボジアに行ったとき、日本の面白い話をしてくれと頼まれたので、落語の「時そば」をクメール語で話したところ大いに受けました。中２の時に先生がスコットランドで「時そば」の話をしたという話を思い出したのです」

　私の授業が２７年後、役に立ったことを知りうれしく思った。

以下は、当時、英字新聞「マイニチ・デイリー・ニュース」（１９８８年７月１３日付）に載った私の投稿の抜粋。

「数年前、私はスコットランドで開かれた英語教員セミナーに参加したが、セミナーには非英語国の英語教員が約５０人参加した。ある晩、各参加者が自分の国の笑い話を紹介することになり、私は落語の「時そば」を話した。これは大いに受け、落語を多くの外国人に紹介できて良かったと思っている。」（南山中学校　２年　日英バイリンガル通信　NO. 5 July 17, 1988より）

落語「時そば」あらすじ

　ある寒い夜、男が屋台でそばを食べ、１６文の代金を払う段になって、一文銭を一枚ずつそば屋に渡しながら、「一（ひい）、二（ふう）、三（みい）、四（よう）、五（いつ）、六（むう）、七（なな）、八（やあ）」と数えたところで、「今なん時でい!」と時刻を尋ねる。そば屋が「へい、九（ここの）つでい」と応えると、「十（とう）、十一、十二、十三、十四、十五、十六、御馳走様」と勘定を払って立ち去った。

　一部始終を見ていた別の男が、真似しようと思い、そばを食べ、代金を払う段になって一文銭を払いながら「一、二、……八、今なん時でい」と尋ねると、主人が「へい、四つでい」と答える。そこで男は「五、六……」と数え続ける。

TOKI-SOBA STORY IN CAMBODIA

 

　　Yesterday I attended my ex-students’ year-end party. There were twelve of them, all 41 years old. I taught them English when they were eighth graders (14 years old). One of them, S-kun told me that he had told “Toki-soba” story in Khmer in Cambodia. He went there as a staff member of The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He said to me, “When the Cambodians asked me to tell a Japanese funny story, I remembered your lesson where you told us about “Toki-soba” that you had told in Scotland.”

   I am glad that “Toki-soba” story I told in my class helped S-kun in Cambodia.

　　 The following is an excerpt from my essay published in THE MAINICHI DAILY NEWS, July 13, 1988.

　“A few years ago, about 50 English teachers from about 30 non-English speaking countries attended a summer seminar for English teachers in Scotland. I was one of them. One night when some 15 participants, including me, were drinking, one of us suggested that each person tell a funny story of his or her own country. One by one a funny story was introduced and when my turn came, I told the “Tokisoba rakugo” story. All the people there laughed and enjoyed it very much. I was glad that I communicated something Japanese to them.”

   Here is “Toki-soba” story:

One cold night, a man ate noodle at a noodle vendor’s. When he finished eating and was paying 16 cents for the price, he gave one-cent coin one after another to the vendor, counting, “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.” He abruptly stops counting, and asks, “What time is it now?” The vendor says, “It’s nine.” Then the man continues to count, “ten, eleven, twelve, thirteen, fourteen, sixteen. That’s good noodle!” and he left.

　　Another man who has witnessed the whole thing wants to imitate the man. He eats  noodle and when he was paying the 16 cent-price, he begins to give one-cent coins one by one to the vendor, counting, “One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight.” Here he stops counting and says, “What time is it?” The vendor replies, “Four.” So the man continues to count, “Five, six, seven….”
