和文英訳課題
ヴェネツィアに下り立つと、激しい雨足が跳ね返り、水路から溢れ出した海水がひたひたと路上を覆っている。足元からも、襟元や袖口からも、湿気は容赦なく入り込んでくる。
１５０１年ここヴェネツィアにて、出版史に残る小型本が印刷されたという。
刊行したのは、アルドス・マヌティウス。
私はアルドスについて何も知らなかったばかりか、５００年前のヴェネツィアで出版が行われていたことも知らなかった。
くるぶしを越える冠水の中を歩きながら、この町と本との意外な組み合わせを思う。

アルドゥスは、いったいなぜこの町で印刷業を営んだのだろう。
現地で取材するにあたり、海図が頭に浮かんだ。
記録に残る古い海図には、ヴェネツィアで刷られたものが多い。
交易業で栄えたヴェネツィアの明暗は、海の向こうをどう処していくかにかかっていた。１３００年代前半に航路と異国の様子を紙に記録し後継できるようにしたのは、同時代の海運国のなかでヴェネツィアだけだった。実利的な気質のヴェネツィア人は、優れた実務能力を発揮して、類のない繁栄を遂げることができたのである。
ヴェネツィアの変遷を海峡や干潟を通して観察している友人は、古い海図にも詳しい。
海と紙と印刷。
この町の古書に繋がる情報も持っているかもしれない。
「アルドゥスのことなら、国立図書館の元館長に訊くといい」
友人は、開口一番に言った。

THE BEST TRANSLATION
It was raining hard when I arrived in (stepped out onto a) Venice street. The rain was hitting the street, (was) splashing. The seawater overflowed from the channels and (barely) covered the street. The humid air relentlessly soaked me from below and through my collar and cuffs.
It is said that Aldus Manutius published pocket-size books here in Venice in 1501. It was an epoch-making event in the publishing history.
I had not known about him, much less about the fact that books were published (publishing was done) in Venice 500 years ago.
Walking in the water higher than my (the) ankle, I wondered about the unlikely relation between this city and books.
Water and paper.
Why did Aldus start publishing business in Venice (this city)?
Marine charts flashed into my mind as I was gathering information about him in the City of Water.
Most of the existing old charts were published in the city.
Venice had prospered through trading. Whether Venice would rise or fall depended on how it dealt (to deal) with (overseas) countries overseas. Among many maritime nations in those days, Venice was the only (nation) that recorded the shipping routes and affairs of foreign countries on paper in the early 1300s in order to hand down the information to future (the next) generations. Practical as they were, Venetians achieved an unprecedented prosperity through their exceptional business ability.
A friend of mine, who observed the history of Venice by studying the straits and (the) lagoons, was well-versed in old charts.
The sea, paper, and printing.
I thought he might have information that was related to the city’s old books.
When I inquired him about Aldus Manutius, the very first thing he said was, “When it comes to Aldus, you should ask the ex-director of the national library.”
