ダビデのハート型の瞳 

「美の巨人」というテレビ番組を見た。ミケランジェロ作のダビデ像についての番組であったが、彼がいかに技巧を凝らしてダビデの目を彫ったかが分かり、驚嘆してしまった。

ダビデの目を見ると、瞳がハート型になっている。すなわち、瞳の孔の頂点から、鈎のような形をした小さな大理石がぶら下がっている。このごくわずかなかけらは瞳に当たった反射光なのだ。ダビデの目の中の瞳の位置と光っている瞳によって、ダビデが近くに立っているゴライアスを見ているように見える。瞳はゴライアスの位置と方向を示しているわけだ。

　ミケランジェロはダビデの瞳に当たって跳ね返った光までも表現したのである。

 

　ウキペディアによると、ダビデは紐の先端に石をいれ、振り回して飛ばした。石はゴリアテの額のど真ん中に命中し、ゴリアテはうつ伏せに倒れた。ダビデは首を刎ねた。

 　I watched a TV program Bi no Kyojin-tachi (Giant Artists), which featured the statue of David produced by Michelangelo. I was amazed at his dexterity in carving David’s eyes.
　　If you look at David’s eyes, you will notice that his pupils are heart-shaped. That is, you will find a tiny hook-shaped marble dangling from the top of each pupil’s hollow. This bit of marble highlights the pupils. Because of the position of the pupils in his eyes and the highlighted pupils, David looks as if he is looking at his enemy, Goliath, in the distance. The pupils show both the distance and direction of the enemy.
　　Michelangelo produced the reflection of light on David’s pupils.
　　According to Wikipedia, David hurls a stone from his sling with all his might and hits Goliath in the center of his forehead, Goliath falls on his face to the ground, and David cuts off his head.
