先週、４４年ぶりにナイアガラの滝を見た。１９６９年に見たときは、アメリカ側の滝には水がなくて、横幅３００メートル、高さ３０メートルの横長の岸壁があるだけで、水が数本ちょろちょろと流れ落ちていた。岸壁が崩壊しないように修復しているとのことであった。

　ウキペディアを調べたら、次のように書いてあった。「米軍のエンジニアグループが川を堰止め、滝壺にある岩を取り除き、川床を調査し、断層にボルトを入れて強化し、崩壊を止めた」
　４４年前のアメリカ滝は美しくも感動的でもなく、ただグロテスクなだけであった。ガイドが「水のない滝の見物とは運が悪いですが、めったにないチャンスと思って、水があるときにまた来てください」と言った。
　それから、やっと先週（２０１３年、10月8日）水のあるアメリカ滝を見た。莫大な量の水が絶え間なく流れ落ち、雷鳴を立て、水煙をあげていた。感動した。前と全然違う。なんと美しい滝！　水がない滝がどのようであったか知っているからこそ、その分美ししかった。
　ガイドが私に言った「私はナイアガラの滝を２７年間ガイドしています。アメリカ滝がせき止められたということは聞いたことがありますが、あまり昔のことで、伝説みたいなものです。あなたは伝説の人ですね」

Last week I visited the Niagara Falls for the first time in 44 years. When I visited the falls in 1969, the American side of the falls was dry as in the pictures. I only saw a long stretch of bare red cliff about 300-meter long and 30-meter high with a few lines of water coming down over the cliff. I heard that they were restructuring the American Falls to prevent the further erosion of the cliff.

 According to the Wikipedia, the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers dammed the falls to clear rock from the base of the falls, and studied the riverbed and mechanically bolted and strengthened a number of faults to delay the gradual erosion of the American Falls.

Therefore, the sight of the American Falls 44 years ago was not beautiful, nor impressive. They were ugly and grotesque. The tourist guide said, “It is unfortunate of you to visit the dry falls, but this is a rare occasion to see the falls like this. I hope you will come again when water is falling.”

   And I returned to the Niagara Falls last week. I saw a tremendous amount of white water dropping incessantly making thunderous sound and raising mist high into the air. I was very much impressed. How different! And how beautiful! The waterfalls was all the more beautiful because I knew how they looked decades ago.

  The tourist guide said to me, “I have been guiding tourists around the Niagara Falls for the past 27 years. I have heard there was a time when the American Falls were dry. The story of the dry American Falls is so ancient that it is a legend. You are a man from it.”
