トロント空港を離陸するとき、機内アナウンス（シートベルトを締めよ。電子機器の電源を切れ、禁煙等）は、まず英語、それからフランス語の順だった。しかし、モントリオール空港に着陸するときは、先にフランス語、それから英語になった。どうして順序が逆になったのか。

　ガイド曰く「フランス語憲章が１９７７年に制定されて以来、ケベック州はフランス語が公用語になっています」ガイドによると、当時英語を使っていた約６００の会社がケベック州外に移転し、ケベック州に多大な経済的打撃を与えたという。驚くことに、言語警察なるものが登場し、州民がフランス語憲章を遵守しているか見回り、もし英語の看板を見つけたら撤去し、関係者を処罰したという。

　現在ケベック州は道路標識からレストランのメニューに至るまで全てフランス語で書かれており、街ではフランス語が話されている。フランスに来たのかという錯覚に陥った。

ナポレオンとメープルシロップ

カナダの国旗はメープルの葉っぱだ。カナダではメープルの木がいっぱい生えているからだ。なぜそんなに沢山生えているのだろう。

　ガイドによると、１９世紀の始めイギリス軍と、ナポレオン率いるフランス軍が戦かった。イギリス軍は軍艦を作るために多くの木材を必要としたが、イギリスにある木材は限度があり、イギリスは植民地、カナダの木材に目をつけた。

　当時、カナダの山には白松がたくさん生えていたのだが、造船用に切り倒され、日陰になっていたメープルの木が太陽の光を浴び、急速に生育しだした。数十年後、メープルの木はカナダの山々を覆うようになり、かの世界的に有名なメープルシロップをもたらしたのだ。

クベックのアッパータウンで撮った写真。この砲丸は250年以上もメープルの木の根元に食い込んだままだ。1759年、イギリス軍とフランス軍が戦った「ケベックの戦い」の遺物だ。英国軍はケベックに4万発も砲丸を打ち込んだと言われている。

 FRENCH AS THE OFFICAL LANGUAGE

   When the Canadian airplane was taking from the Toronto Airport, announcements such as “Fasten your seat belt,” “Turn off your electronics,” and “no smoking, please” was made first in English and then in French. However, when the plane was arriving at the Montreal Airport, the announcement was made first in French and then in English. I wondered why the order of the two languages had been changed.   

The tourist guide in Quebec said that the Charter of the French Language was enacted in 1977 and since then the official language in the Province of Quebec was French. According to her, more than 600 foreign companies which used English moved out of the province, causing great damage to the economy of the province. Surprisingly, “the tongue troopers” patrolled to see if the people in Quebec were observing the official language rule. If they found English signboards, they immediately removed them and punished the people responsible.

In the city of Quebec today, everything from signboards in the streets to menus in the restaurants are written in French. Quebeckers are speaking French. I thought I had come to France.

NAPOLEON AND MAPLE SYRUP

 

　　The design of the national flag of Canada is a maple leave, because a lot of maple trees grow in Canada. Have you ever wondered why there are so many maple trees there?

The tourist guide gave me the answer:

When Britain and France led by Napoleon fought in the early 19^th century, Britain needed a lot of wood to build warships. Since the amount of wood in Britain was limited, Britain decided to use the wood in Canada, the then colony of Britain.

In those days a lot of white pine trees grew in the mountains in Canada. When they cut them to build warships, maple trees, which had long been in the shadow of the white pine trees, suddenly received more sunlight and began to grow rapidly. And decades later maple trees began to cover the Canadian mountains, producing the world-famous maple syrup.

ONE OUT OF 40,000

　　I took this photograph in a street in the Upper Town of Quebec. This cannonball has been wedged in the base of a maple tree for more than 250 years. It was left during the Battle of Quebec, which was fought between France and Britain in 1759. The British army is said to have fired some 40,000 cannonballs into Quebec.
