私の住んでいるマンションの近くに小さな公園があり、私は毎朝そこで体操をしている。

先日、そこに生えていた巨木（多分、ケヤキ）が４本切り倒されていた。恐らく近所の住民が市の土木課にお願いして切らせたのだろう。落ち葉が落ち、日陰になるからと言う理由からかもしれない。

どの木も、私が４０年ほど前にマンションに引っ越してきた当時に植えられた木で細長い木であったが、４０年もたつと腕で抱えきれないぐらいの太さになり、高さは５階建てのマンションぐらいあった。巨木の眺めは心を休ませてくれていたのに残念なことになった。

そういえば、近所の空き地や林や藪が更地にされ、どんどん新築の家が立っている。緑が消えるのは何とも痛ましいことだ。今では、近所はマンションと細長い三階建てのビルばかりになってしまった。なんと殺風景なことヨ。

Cutting down Trees

There is a small park near the condominium where I live. I make it a rule to take exercise there every morning.

Just a few days ago, four big trees (probably zelkova trees) were cut down. Because the falling leaves were nuisance for the neighboring inhabitants and because the trees made shadows upon their houses, they requested the Civil Engineering Division of Nagoya City to get rid of them, I guess.

The four trees were planted about 40 years ago when I moved to live in the condominium. At that time, they were tall and thin, but now they grew so big and so tall as a five-story condominium that you could not hold any one of them in your arms. The sight of the trees with full of green leaves always consoled me.

Now, new houses have replaced the neighboring empty lots and the places where trees and bushes once grew. It is painful to see big stumps and decreasing amount of foliage around you. As I walk in the neighboring area today, I see nothing but new condominiums and slender two or three story buildings. How desolate a scenery!

 コロナ禍で墓参りにこの二年間行ってなかったが、ワクチン接種を二回やったから、久しぶりに大垣に行った。

驚いたのは何もかも様変わりしていたことである。

まず、名古屋駅から大垣駅までのJR沿線の景色だ。いつの間に建ったのか新しいマンション、ショッピングモール、工場、会社、住宅が延々とつづき、まるで知らない線路を走っているような気になった。沿線で変わらないのは岐阜城のある金華山と遥か西にある伊吹山ぐらいであった。

大垣市内も様変わりしていた。少年時代の風景から徐々に変わっていたが、この二年間で急激な変化があった。懐かしい町並みはマンションに変わり、高層ビルが建ち、新しい店ができていた。大垣市市役所も１０階建ての眩しいばかりの市庁舎に変わっていた。変わってなかったのは小学校の担任の先生の実家のお寺と大垣城ぐらいであった。

考えてみれば、１００年もたてば、全てのものが変わってしまう。今生きている人も亡くなり、今ある建物も消える。１００年前と言えば、１９２１年で大正１０年。１００年後と言えば２１２１年だ。どういう社会にになっているか想像もできない。

万物流転か。

Visiting the Grave

After a two-year absence, I went to Ogaki City to visit my ancestors’ grave. I had abstained from doing so because of the corona pandemic, but I had recently got the corona vaccine twice.

What surprised me was the drastic changes of the scenery I saw.

The scenery along the JR railway line from Nagoya Station to Ogaki Station had changed: condominium buildings, shopping moles, factories, and houses had been newly constructed all along the line till my destination. I felt as if I were traveling a strange place. The things that had not changed were Mt. Kinka, on top of which stands Gifu Castle, and Mt. Ibuki in the distance.

Ogaki City had changed a lot, too. I knew that it changed gradually because I visited it once in a while, but this time I saw drastic changes: condominiums, tall buildings, new shops had replaced the good old day’s houses. A bright ten-story Ogaki City Hall had been newly built. I recognized only two things that had not changed: Ogaki Castle and the old temple in which my elementary day’s homeroom teacher lived as a Japanese monk’s son.

Think of your environment. Everything changes in 100 years. People alive now will die, and new houses will disappear. What year is 100 years ago? It is 1921 or the tenth year of Taisho era. What about 100 years later? It will be 2121. Nobody can imagine what it will be like.

All things are in a state of flux.

 　塵も積もれば山となるというが、犬の小便も積もれば、信号機を倒す。

　中日新聞の「中日春秋」によると、三重県鈴鹿市の信号機が腐食し、倒れた。耐用年数を５０年と見込んでいたが、半分程度の２３年で倒れた。県警科学捜査研究所の分析で、原因は信号機は犬の散歩コースにあり、しばしば犬に小便をかけられて腐食し倒れたと判明した。

　たかがオシッコ、されどオシッコである。

　何ごとも、馬鹿にしてはいけない。

Ａ Dog’s Piss

As the proverb goes, “Many a little makes a mickle.” A dog’s urine felled a traffic signal.

 According to an editor’s column, Chunichi Shunjyu in the Chunichi Newspaper, a traffic signal pole in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture eroded and fell. Traffic signal poles usually last for 50 years, but this pole fell within 23 years of use. The forensic science center of the Mie Prefectural Police Department announced the cause of the accident: the signal pole stood along the way of a dog’s walking route, and the little animal often pissed on the signal pole.

Mere piss, and yet, hideous piss.

Do not belittle anything.

神風特攻隊員の死 Ａ Kamikaze Pilot’s Death

神風特攻隊員の死　

以下は新聞に載った投稿の要旨です。このような痛ましいことが現実にあったのです。

１９４５年８月。終戦後、私の兄は神風特攻隊員でしたが帰還して参りました。出撃直前に飛行機のエンジンが故障したため飛ぶことができなかったからです。 帰還した兄は父に長い間許しを請うていました。父は村長で、村の多数の若者を戦地に送り出し、そのうちの大多数の人が帰還しませんでした。父は黙して、兄にひと言も声をかけませんでした。数日後、兄は山に入り、自害用に持っていた手榴弾で自爆しました。 父と兄の胸中には計り知れないものがあったと思います。

Ａ Kamikaze Pilot’s Death

   The following passage is a summary of a letter to the editor. This is one of the saddest stories I have ever read. This tragedy actually took place.

      After the war, in August, 1945, my brother, a Kamikaze pilot, returned home. The engine of his fighter malfunctioned just before the departure.

He begged his father’s pardon for a long time. His father was the head of the village and had sent many young men to the war, and most of them had died. He kept silent before my brother and did not utter a word to him.

Several days later, my brother went to a mountain and killed himself with the grenade he had been given for suicide. 

I feel deep sorrow for my father and brother. What they felt in their hearts no one can know.

喜劇俳優 志村けん A Comedian Ken Shimura

 喜劇俳優　志村けん　

2020年三月、志村けんさんが新型コロナ感染症で亡くなった。７０歳であった。

以下はNHKテレビで放送された志村けんさんの特別番組からの抜粋。

Ken Shimura died of a novel coronavirus infection at the age of 70 in March, 2020. 

The following passages are excerpts from the special program on Ken Shimura made by NHK (Japan Broadcasting Corporation).

志村けんさんのことば

やっぱり僕は、子供が見ても、大人が見ても、老人が見ても、笑えるコントをやりたい。もちろん笑いにはいろんな形があっていいが、どれがいい悪いって話じゃない。ただ僕は、今も昔もなくて、普遍的なものだと思っている。

Ken Shimura’s words:

After all, I want to perform such comedies as will make all the people, that is, children, adults, and the aged, laugh. Of course, there are various forms of comedies. You can’t say this comedy is good or that one is bad. I just think the essence of comedy is the same throughout the ages. It is universal.

山田洋次監督の言葉

この人（志村けん）は本物のコメディアンだなってことね。おしゃべりする人じゃないよ。どっちかと言えば口数は少なくて、僕の目を見てしゃべることなんかほとんどなかったね。うつむいてぼそぼそという話し方をする人、それが僕にとってはすごいやっぱり魅力的だったね。非常に危険なところをいつも歩いていなきゃいけないっていうか、際どいところを一歩足を踏み外したら奈落の底に落ちてしまうようなところを恐る恐る歩いているようなそんな人生を喜劇俳優はたどらなきゃいけませんっていうのは渥美清さんの説なんだけれども、僕は志村さんがうつむきにぼそぼそっと話す姿勢を見てて、ああ、この人はその危険な道をね、必死になって歩いているコメディアンだなと言う風に思ったのね。滑稽な人間を演じること自体がね、悲しいことなんだよ。みんなが思わず吹き出してしまう、本当に人間ってみっともないと思うような芝居をする人ってのは、どっかで命がけみたいなところが無きゃいけないね。それを演じる人ってのは、人間の深い悲しみがよくわかってなきゃできないことだね。この人はすごいなと、僕に言わせれば、最後の喜劇俳優だなって言う感じがしたね。彼の豊かな表現力の本当に半分も三分の一も出し切らないで死んじゃったんじゃないかと思いますよ。とっても悔しいね。喜劇を志す監督としてね。とっても残念に思っていますね。

A film director, Yoji Yamada’s words:

I think he [Ken Shimura] was a real comedian. He was not talkative, rather reticent. He rarely looked at my eyes while he was talking to me lowering his eyes and murmuring hesitatingly. His way of talking attracted me very much. According to Kiyoshi Atsumi, a comedian must always walk along a very dangerous road. In other words, he must live a life where he cautiously walks on a tightrope. Make a false step and you will fall into a bottomless abyss. Looking at Shimura’s reserved and prone way of talking, I thought this comedian was walking desperately along such a dangerous road. A comedian must somehow risk his life to make the audience burst into laughter and yet let them realize that human beings are ugly. You can’t perform such a comedy without experiencing deep sadness. In my opinion, he is a great and the last comedian in Japan. I think he died without expressing even a half or one-third of his rich talent as a comedy actor. I greatly regret his death as a comedy film director. I am bitterly disappointed.

新聞によれば、三重県鈴鹿市で信号機が腐食して倒れたという。耐用年数が５０年なのに半分程度の２３年で倒れてしまった。三重県警科学捜査研究所の分析によると、原因は犬のオシッコらしい。倒れた信号機は犬の散歩コースにあり、犬が散歩のたびに信号機の根元に尿をかけたためらしい。

犬も歩けば棒に当たるというが、犬も歩けば棒を倒すようだ。

A Walking Dog And a Traffic Light

According to a newspaper, a traffic signal pole in Suzuka City, Mie Prefecture fell. Usually, traffic signal poles last about 50 years, but this pole lasted for only 23 years, less than a half of the useful pole life. The analysis conducted by the Science Department in the Mie Prefectural Police concluded that the cause of the fall was dogs’ urination. The pole used to stand along the course of dogs’ walking routes. Dogs urinated against the pole almost every time they came across the pole while walking.

A Japanese proverb says, “A walking dog hits against a pole” (a flying crow always catches something), but this time a walking dog knocked down a pole.

映画「HOKUSAI」 A FILM, "HOKUSAI"

映画HOKUSAIを見てきた。６５点ぐらい。

ある程度北斎のことを知ってないと、話が分からない。

まとまった筋がなく、派手なシーンの寄せ集めで観衆の興味を引こうという魂胆が見え見え。

欠点

①壱の巻は版元蔦屋重三郎の話で、北斎は脇役。

②勝川春水（北斎）が何故自殺しようとしたのか、描写不足

③柳亭種彦が四人の侍に惨殺されるが、やり過ぎ。首がないのも受けを狙ったか。

④滝沢馬琴と挿絵のことで言い争うが、その理由が描写不足

⑤小布施に行くが、どこに行ったか分からない。

⑥最後の場面で怒涛図を描くが、説明不足。

長所

江戸時代の風物、裏長屋、吉原、北斎の家の中が巧く描かれていた。

 

HOKUSAI, A FILM

I went to see Hokusai. 65 points out of 100.

You won’t understand the film unless you have some knowledge about him.

No plots, but a collection of exaggerated scenes. Obviously, the director wanted to attract you with such cheap scenes.

Bad points:

1.    The first chapter deals with the publisher, Tsutaya Jyuzaburo, not Hokusai.

2.    Katsukawa Shunsui (Hokusai) tries to commit suicide, but the reason is not well explained.

3.    Ryutei Tanehiko is brutally killed by samurai. It was too brutal to see. His head is cut off; the director obviously wanted to shock you. Another cheap point.

4.    Hokusai and Takizawa Bakin quarrel but why is not depicted.

5.    Hokusai and Oei go to Obuse, but the film does not tell where their destination is. 

6.    AT the last scene Hokusai draws Dotozu (rough waves), but the film does not tell what it is.

Good point:

Things in Edo ear are well shown, such as common people’s nagaya (cheap apartment), Yoshiwara (a prostitute house), and Hokusai’s house.
