現代のヒーロー

今朝の新聞である絵画の写真が目を引いた。少年の絵で、彼は看護師の人形を手にもって、スーパーマンのように空中を飛行させている。看護師はマントを翻して、空を飛んでいるように見える。

イギリスの画家バンスキーさんが病院に寄贈した最新作の絵である。少年も、看護師も、ゴミ屑籠に入れられたバットマンやスーパーマンなども実にうまく描かれている。今、世界中に蔓延しているコロナ禍の時に、スーパーマンに代わる新しいヒーローの登場を現わしている。

看護師の胸にある赤十字のみが赤色で、見る者の目をとらえており、素晴らしい作品だ。

医療従事者は本当に命を懸けてウイルスと戦っている。まさしくヒーローだ。

Today's Hero

A picture in Today’s newspaper caught my attention. It was a picture of the boy who was flying a nurse-doll like a superman in the air. The nurse-doll, looks as if she were flying in the air with her cape waving with the wind.

   This is one of Banksy's latest pictures which he donated to a hospital. The boy, the nurse-doll, Batman and Superman in the waste basket and all the other parts are excellently painted. The nurse-doll symbolizes a new hero who will replace Superman in the harsh time of Corona Virus.

   Only the cross on the doll’s chest is painted red. The red-cross draws attention of the readers. This is a wonderful picture.

   The people engaged in medical jobs are fighting against the virus at the risk of their lives. They are really heroes.

コロナ禍に思うこと 

　老後は安寧に暮らしていけそうだと思っていたのに、あにはからんや、ひどいことになってしまった。週に三回行っていた英語の講座は延期、月に一度は行っていた映画館は閉鎖、しばしば行っていた図書館も閉館、毎日のように行って珈琲を飲みながら本を読んだりしていたイオンモールのフードコートも閉鎖だ。コンサートも美術館も。古武道の杖道の稽古も無い。政府は外出を自粛せよと言っているが、行くところがないから外出のしようがない。せいぜい散歩する程度だ。

　しかし、コロナ禍のお陰で、見えないものが見えてきた。人間は社会的動物ということだ。人と交流しないで、一人ぼっちでは無人島に漂着したロビンソン・クルソーのような生活になってしまう。ロビンソン・クルーソーだって、後にはフライデーという黒人奴隷と人間的接触をするようになる。戦争の捕虜で質の悪いのは独房に入れられるが、独房の辛さは人と接触できないこともカウントされているのだ。

　次に、人間は地球を我が物顔で汚していたが、最近は二酸化炭素の量が減って空気がきれいになったそうだ。車の運転量が減って、ガソリンを使う量が減ったためだ。海水に浸かっていたベニスの水が澄んできたという。生物たちはほっと一息ついたのではないか。地球温暖化で氷河が溶け始めていたが、少しはおさまったかもしれない。

　私個人の生活も変わった。まずお金を使うところがない。講座の授業料、映画代金、食事代、喫茶代、コンサート、美術館、観劇、その他の支出が減った。また、図書館が閉館で本が借りれず、今まで積読（つんどく）だった本を読むようになった。４０年ぐらい読んでなかった坂東三津五郎と武田鉄二の対談「芸十夜」、川端康成「古都」、山本兼一「火天の城」のphne du Maurierの”Jamaica Inn”を読んだ。今はブックオフで買った直木賞受賞の川越宗一著の「熱源」を読んでいる。また溜まりに溜まっていたビデオを見て消化した。さらに、運動不足を補うため、毎日のように山崎川沿いを散歩するようになった。一日平均歩数は三月は６４００歩、四月は６７５０歩だ。その他、短編小説の執筆もしている。最近推敲したのは「シャッターは６時に閉まる」と「邪念の鑿」だ。また、メールやラインで小学校から大学、さらに教員時代の同僚との文通もしている。

 まだコロナ禍は一年ぐらいは続きそうだ。感染しないようにして乗り越え、、コロナ禍が終息したら自由に、行きたいところに行き、会いたい人に会い、食べたいものを食べるぞ。

Life under Corona Virus Pandemic

　　I thought I would lead a peaceful life for the rest of my life, but that was wrong. My optimism has been completely destroyed by the pandemic. I used to attend English classes thrice a week, but they were postponed; I used to go to the movies at least once a month, but the movie theaters were closed; I used to go to the libraries at least once a week, but they were shut; I used to go to the food-court in Ion Mall near my house and enjoyed reading books sipping coffee, but it was closed; I can’t go to concerts or museums. The class for practicing martial arts of Jo-do which I had been attending for nearly 30 years was postponed. The government recommends the citizens to stay at home, but where can I go? I have nowhere to go. All I can do is to take a walk.

 　　However, thanks to the corona virus, I have noticed something I did not notice before. That is, human-beings are SOCIAL animals. The life people are leading is like the one Robinson Crusoe leads, who lives alone in an uninhabited island. Yet, he encounters a black man named Friday at the end of his unusual life. A dangerous prisoner of war is confined in a jail cell. This is to teach him how miserable he will be if he has to lead life alone. That is an additional punishment.

　 Next, human-beings, who consider themselves as the owner of the earth, have been polluting the air for two centuries since the industrial revolution, but it has been reported that the air has recently become cleaner due to the decrease of carbon dioxide. Because the automobile traffic has decreased, the use of gasoline has also dropped. The dirty water in Venice has become cleaner, they say. The animals and plants may be happy. The glacier that has been melting these years may have stopped melting.
　　As for my life, it has drastically changed. First, I have nowhere to spend money. I don’t have to pay for various classes, movies, converts, theaters, and museums. Secondly, I began to read the books I had kept in my bookshelves intending to read. Recently, I read “Gei Jyu-ya” (Ten Stories on Kabuki Plays), which recorded the dialogue between Banto Mitsugoro and Tetsuya Takeda, “Koto” written by Yasunari Kawabata, “Katen no Shiro” (Castle in the Fiery Heaven) by Kenichi Yamamoto, and “Jamaica Inn” by Daphne du Maurier. Thirdly, I have watched the recorded television videos which I had missed to watch for many months. Also, I began to take a walk every day to take exercise. I usually walk along the Yamazaki River. I try to walk more than 5000 steps a day. The average steps was 6,400 in March and 6750 steps in April. Furthermore, I am writing short stories. I am correcting my manuscripts such as “The Shutter Will Clos at Six,” and “Jyanen no Nomi” (Evil Thoughts and Chisel). In addition to them, I correspond with my old friends from my elementary, junior, senior high schools, and university, and the former colleagues in Nanzan High School through Lines and e-mails.
　　The new corona virus pandemic will probably continue about a year or more. I will try not to catch the disease. And after the pandemic ceases, I will go anywhere I want to go, eat anything I want to eat, and meet anybody I want to meet. Until then, endurance, endurance, and endurance.

大仏殿と萩 the Colossal Hall of the Great Buddha

大仏殿と萩

奈良の大仏殿について調べていくうちに驚いたことがある。それは奈良東大寺の大仏殿は山口県の萩と関係があるということだ。

源平合戦で平氏によって東大寺や興福寺が焼失するが、時の老僧重源が東大寺復興の大勧進職として陣頭指揮を執り、大仏殿の木材を周防の国（現・山口県）から取り寄せた。

重源は、周防の佐波郡徳地の山から切り出した巨木（直径１・５メートル）、長さ２７メートル）２８本をはじめとして何百本もの木材を筏に組んで阿武川を日本海まで流した。阿武川は海にそそぐ直前に橋本川と松本川に分かれるが、この二本の川に囲まれている町が萩市の中心地だ。日本海から関門海峡を通って瀬戸内海に入り、瀬戸内海を通って、大阪湾に達し、そこから淀川を遡り、支流の木津川をさらに遡り、奈良の近くの陸地に引き上げられ、一本の丸太が牛１２０頭で東大寺まで運ばれたという。気の遠くなるような話だ。

かように大仏殿と萩は木材によってつながっているのだ。

 the Colossal Hall of the Great Buddha

While I was reading a book about Daibutsu-den (the Colossal Hall of the Great Buddha) in Nara, I was surprised to know that it is connected with Hagi City in Yamaguchi Prefecture.

Back in 1181, Todaiji Temple and Kofukuji Temple were burned down during the Genji and Heike Battle. An old Buddhist priest named Chogen directed the re-construction of the temple as daikanjin or the director of the re-construction. He ordered a great number of logs in Suo (present Yamaguchi Prefecture) to be sent to Nara.

   Surprisingly, 28 giant logs (diameter 1.5 meters and height 27 meters) and hundreds of other huge logs chopped in Tokuchi, Sawa-gun in Suo went down the Abu River in the form of rafts for about 60 kilometers. The river splits into two near the sea: Hashimoto River and Matsumoto River. The two rivers now surround the main part of Hagi City. The raft-logs were pulled by boats and went through the Kanmon Strait into the Seto Inland Sea. They were pulled to the Osaka Bay, and from there, each huge log was pulled by four boats up the Yodo River and Kizu River. The logs were dragged onto land near Nara. Then each of the logs was pulled by 120 cows to Nara. Isn’t this amazing? 

     Thus, Daibutsu-den and Hagi are connected.

「ロミオとジュリエット」とペスト "Romeo and Juliet" and Plague

コロナ禍で世界中が恐怖におののいている最近、ある英国人が次のような話をしてくれた。

「ロミオとジュリエット」の最後の場面でロミオは毒を飲み、ジュリエットは自刃するが、これは黒死病（ペスト）のためであった。というのは、修道士が書いた手紙（「ジュリエットは仮死状態だが４２時間後には生き返る」という内容）を使者がロミオのところに届けようとするが、途中で、使者は乞われてある病人の家に立ち寄る。ところがその病人が黒死病で、村人がその家を使者ともども封鎖してしまう。そのため手紙はロミオに届かない。一方、ロミオはうわさでジュリエットが死んだことを知り、墓に駆けつけてみるとジュリエットが死んでいた。ロミオは悲嘆にくれて、途中で買った毒を飲み死んでしまう。死んだあとに生き返ったジュリエットもロミオが死んでいるのを見て、ロミオの短剣で自分も死ぬ。

 「ロメオとジュリエット」は１５９５年にロンドンで初演されたが、ロンドン では１５９２年に黒死病のために劇場が閉鎖された。ロンドンでの黒死病流行は１５９２－１５９４年とされている。シェクスピアはハムレットという名前の息子と妹二人も黒死病で亡くしている。そういう状況で彼は「ロミオとジュリエット」を書いた。観衆もこういう状況でこの戯曲を見たのだから身近に感じたことだろう。

"Romeo and Juliet" and Plague

People all over the world are fearful of the pandemic Corona Virus. A British man told me the following story concerning “Romeo and Juliet.”:

At the final scene of “Romeo and Juliet,” Romeo takes fatal poison and Juliet commits suicide with his dagger. This tragedy is caused by plague because Friar John fails to hand Romeo the letter which Friar Laurence wrote. In the letter was written the following message: Juliet is in a state of apparent death, but she will wake up in 42 hours. John visits a sick man on his way to Romeo, but this man is infected by plague. Finding the man is infected by the death disease, the villagers lock down the sick man and John in the house. Thus, the letter does not reach Romeo. Meanwhile, Romeo hears the rumor of Juliet’s death, he rushes to her tomb and finds her dead. In despair, he takes the poison he has bought on his way to the tomb and dies. After his death, Juliet wakes to find her beloved Romeo dead by her side and commits suicide with his dagger.

“Romeo and Juliet” was first performed in London in 1595. The theater was  closed owing to the plague in 1592. The plague raged in London from 1592 to 1594. Shakespeare’s two sisters and his son named Hamlet died because of the plague. Under the circumstances, the spectators of the tragic play cursed by plague must have been moved all the more.

「高校講座」（月～金曜、Ｅテレ）を視聴するようにしている。時代と共に変わりゆく知識。人間いくつになっても学ばなければならない。特に私が楽しみにしているのは、歴史と地理。物理と化学も面白い。書道にも興味が湧いてきた。

However Old You Are

I make it a rule to watch the NHK educational television program, “Koko koza” (Senior High School Course) that is broadcast from Monday to Friday. Because old knowledge is renewed over time, you must continue to study however old you are. The subjects I find delightful are history and geography. I am also interested in physics and chemistry. Recently I have been attracted in Japanese calligraphy.

I am amazed that a 92-year-old man has a strong desire to learn. I must follow his example.

今日は私の誕生日 Today Is My Birthday

今日は私の誕生日

今日は私の誕生日だ。７７歳になった。私の父は７６歳のときに脳梗塞になり、半身不随で６年間も病院生活を送り、８２歳で亡くなった。だから父の健常者としての生活は７６歳で終わったことになる。また、私の祖父は７５歳で亡くなっている。

こう考えると、７７歳の今,私は父よりも、祖父よりも長く生きたことになる。７６歳というのは、若いころはずいぶんと年寄りと思っていたが、実際その年齢になると、そうは思わない。今のところ私は元気だから、父も祖父もこんなに若くして亡くなったのかと思うと、早すぎたと思う。

幸い私の曽祖父は９０歳まで生きたから、父と祖父を乗り越えた今、曾祖父よりも長く生きることを目指したい。

Today Is My Birthday

Today is my 77^th birthday. My father suffered cerebral infarction at the age of 76 and suffered partial paralysis for six years, and died at the age of     82. His healthy life, I should say, ended at the age of 76. My grandfather died at the age of 75.

Considering this, I am 77 and survived them. When I was young, I thought 76-year-old people were very very old, but I don’t think I am so old. Luckily, I am healthy. I think my father and grandfather died too early.

Fortunately, my great grandfather died at the age of 90. My aim now is to survive my great grandfather.

「パラサイト」の疑問点 Some Questions about “Parasite”

「パラサイト」の疑問点　

　韓国映画「パラサイト」が四部門でアカデミー賞を受賞した。賞賛されるにふさわしい作品だとは思うが、私は意見を異にする。勿論、「パラサイト」は持てる者と持たざる者のギャップをうまく描写している。パク家は呑気でリッチな生活を送っている一方、キム家は生きるか死ぬかの生活である。階段を駆け下りるシーンは上級階級と下層階級の象徴としてうまく提示されている。またキム家が半地下の家に住んでいることは、家の上半分（地上に出ている）は太陽の光が差し込むが、家の下半分は暗闇である。パク家の邸宅は陽の光を一杯浴びている。グエンセは、地下室に住んでいるから完全に光の恩恵を被っていない。要するに、裕福であればあるほど太陽の光の恩恵に預かるのだ。

しかしながら、映画のエンディングは残忍すぎ、凄惨すぎ、残酷すぎ、殺戮的すぎで、映画館を出ると吐き気がした。カラバッチョの血なまぐさい絵画を見た後、美術館を出た後の気持ちと同じであった。



　このほかに、三点疑問点がある。

①  映画の終わりにキムは地下室からモールス信号を息子に送るが、彼は何時、どうやってモールス信号を習ったのか。

②  ダサンの誕生日パーティーにキム家の全員が招待されるが、彼らは綺麗な、乾いた、きちんとした服を着ていた。しかし、彼らの服も家具もすべての持ち物が大雨に濡れ台無しになっているはずなのに、どうやってあの清潔な服を着ることができたのか。

③  インディアンのテントにいたダサンは居間にいる父親とモールス信号で更新する場面があるが、この場面は何のためにあったのか。クライマックスでダサンのモールス信号が効果的に使われていない。伏線でも何でもなかったのには落胆した。監督はなぜ少年にモールス信号を使わせなかったのか。

Some Questions about “Parasite” 

The Korean movie “Parasite” won four Academy awards. It may be worthy of admiration, but I have a different opinion.

I admit that the movie depicts the gap between the haves and have-nots very well. The Parks spend a nonchalant and luxurious  life while the poor Kims are on the verge of life and death. The staircase scene is well presented as a symbol of the high class and the low class. Also, their subterranean dwelling shows that they are half blessed with sunlight and half "blessed" with darkness, while the Park family enjoys abundance of sunshine. Geun-Se, living in the basement, is totally deprived of sunshine. In short, the richer you are, the more sunlight you have access to.

However, the ending of the movie is so brutal, so savage, so cruel, so murderous that I felt like vomiting after I left the theater. I felt the same unpleasant feeling when I left the museum where I saw Caravaggio’s bloodshedding paintings.

Furthermore, I have three more questions:

(1) At the end of the film, Kim sends the Morse code to his son in the basement, but how and when did he learn how to send the Morse code?
 (2) When the whole members of the Kim family are invited to the birthday party for Da-sang, they attend the party wearing clean, dry, decent clothes, but all their belongings including clothes were ruined and drenched with the torrent of rain. How did they get the clean clothes?
(3) Da-sang, who is in the Indian tent, communicates with his father, who is in the living room. His skill should be used in a climax, but it was not utilized effectively. Why did the director have the boy use the Morse code?
