A HAREM TRIP TO TURKEY

                         A HARLEM TRIP TO TURKEY

  My wife and I went to Turkey from May 13 to May 22. Our tourist group, including the Japanese tour conductor and the Turkish guide, consisted of 15 women and one man (myself). So, my trip to Turkey was, as the conductor joked, like a harem, but the women were not young but aged. The average age of the women was around 60, seven of them above 70.
  A Japanese saying goes: when three women gather together, they become terribly yakky. In fact, four of the women near my seat in the Istanbul-bound plane were talking and laughing and talking and laughing for the whole 11 hours. I detest noisy women. I trembled to anticipate that the trip would be ruined by their noise.
  One of the women, who boasted that she was 77 years old, told me that her previous trip abroad had consisted of one man and 7 women, and the one before that had consisted of one man and 9 women. What has happened to the demographic statistics? Why has the number of men going abroad decreased? Probably women have become independent enough to go abroad while their husbands stay in Japan cooking, cleaning, and washing.
  At the dinner table on the last day of the trip, I was surrounded by the harem and had my photograph taken. I had never had such a “heavenly” experience. I guess my face twitched surrounded by the “beautiful women.”
  Even after I returned home late at night, my ears kept ringing with their gravelly and unrelenting voices.
The next morning when I saw some girl students in miniskirts, I was revived. How refreshing and how lively they were!

BALLOONING IN CAPPADOCIA

BALLOONING IN CAPPADOCIA

May 16, 2012

The morning call rang at 5:15. It was a beautiful day with no wind and no clouds. I was sure we could ride a balloon. Ten sleepy people including me gathered at the hotel lobby at 6:00, and got on a microbus to go to the balloon-flight office. From the bus windows we saw dozens of balloons floating in the beautiful blue sky. How exciting it would be to float in a balloon! How wonderful it would be to look down at the landscapes! Just imagining made me excited.
After arriving at the office, we ate bread and drank coffee. We waited for our turn at seven o’clock hoping that we could ride one. Our tour guide had said that ballooning would be canceled when it was windy or cloudy. In some unlucky cases, she said, immediately after your balloon began to lift off, the flight could be canceled. On this day, however, the sky was a perfect blue and there was not even a breeze.
Just a few minute before seven, the guide came to announce that the flight had been cancelled. I couldn't believe my ears. Why? Cancelled? On such a beautiful fine day? I woke up so early and was more than 100 percent ready to ride in a balloon, but oh, the cancelation! Suddenly I was exhausted. We all muttered disappointment, bitterness, and groans.

only God knows
what’s around
the corner

May 17, 2012

Again I woke up at 5:15. The sky was blue. It was not windy, but I did not expect that I would be able to ride a balloon. I knew the flight might be canceled at the last moment. I prepared myself for the worst. Even when I saw dozens of balloons floating above our bus on the way to the office, I was not sure that we could fly. The tables could be turned at the last moment.
Luckily, however, the guide came to tell us that we would fly as scheduled. We took a bus again and rushed to the flight-site. When we reached it, the balloon was enormously huge. We began to climb into the basket. Everyone had great difficulty getting into it because the sides of the basket were so high that you couldn’t stride over them. You had to climb it by carefully putting your foot in the holes notches in the side of it. Everybody suggested to each other how to climb over it. “Easy. All right, put your right foot here. Good, then put your damn foot in this hole. No, you must first turn around.”
When all were aboard, the pilot shot the fire into the center of the balloon several times. My head felt the heat. When the balloon absorbed enough heat, it gently took off from the ground. First, it was only 10 centimeters above the earth, but in a few minutes it was floating about 10 meters above it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FLOATING AND DRIFTING
smoothly floating balloon
the endless panorama view
100 meters above the ground
300 meters, and the highest 600 meters
innumerous cone-shaped rocks and
weirdly-shaped pillars down below
above tall trees and green fields,
in and over the vast valleys
hear the chirp of birds
look! a fox is running, the pilot says
a toy truck is running along a narrow road
other balloons drifting far and near
misty blue mountains far away
the shadow of our balloon on the ground
suddenly dozens of white worms into view
a soundless dog driving the sheep
floating and drifting
floating and driftiing
feel nature
you are one with nature
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

After a 50 minute flight, the balloon landed softly on a grassy land. We climbed out of the basket onto the ground. They had prepared a champagne bottle and a table to celebrate a happy landing.
Pop the cork! Cheers and Kanpai!

HOW TO WRITE COMICS AND NOVELS

Comics and Novels

Recently I read a series of comic books titled Monster written by Naoki Urazawa, a prominent Japanese comic writer. As I was reading them, I realized similarities and differences between comics and novel writing.

1. Appearance
The appearances of the characters must be distinct from each other in both genres. Each character has to have his or her peculiar bodily characteristics. In novels, the writer depicts them by describing their bodily features like: stout, skinny, round faced, big eyed, or bold headed, while in comics the writer does not have to explain their features in words but must draw them. Each character in Monster is so skillfully drawn that the readers can easily identify each character the moment they see them in the page. For example, the police officer who pursues Dr. Tenma, the protagonist, has an inverted triangular face with a bold head and sharp sloe eyes.

2. Clothes
The novel writer describes what the characters are wearing such as a black jacket, yellow long sleeves, dark boots, golden bracelets, or white hats, while the comic writer shows the characters’ wears from top to toe such as the shape, size, and design of a hat. A novelist does not have to show all the details of the clothes. All he has to do is to describe their striking features. In this respect, the comic writers have to pay more attention to the details of the clothing. However, the novelist must choose what to describe and what not to describe. Unnecessary description confuses the reader. The novelist must know that even a slight description of the clothes can play the role of foreshadowing.

3. Background scenery
A novelist depicts the background scenery of the character by writing some of the characteristics like: George was confined in an old dark room, The moon above him began to hide behind the clouds, or The wooden front door was decayed, while the comic writer shows them. Sometimes the comic writer shows the whole background scenery in detail. For example, if the character is standing in front of a house, the comic writer draws the whole house including the windows, walls, roofs, roof tiles, fences, grass, trees, and the sky. The novelist, however, doesn’t have to describe all the details of the background. If the novelist describes them, he has to spend pages and pages. Effective description is expected of a novelist.

4. Psychology
A novelist describes what the character is thinking like: Tom looked happy, but at heart he was crying with vexation; Nancy was talking quietly but she just wanted to scream out of jealousy. The comic writer cannot describe the character’s state of mind. All she can do is to show the character’s psychology by drawing the character’s face paying attention to all the muscles on his face: the shape of eyebrows, lips, eyes, and wrinkles in the forehead. She should draw them so well so that the reader can grasp the character’s psychology at a glance. This requires skillful technique.

5. Appearance of the page
All a novelist can do about the appearance of each page of his book is to fill it with many words or not. Some novelists fill each page with so many words like academic papers that the reader doesn’t feel like reading it. Others leave so much room by writing a lot of dialogue and using many line breaks that each page looks like a blank page with scattered words. The reader of such a scant-word novel might suspect that the novelist is trying to earn the number of pages.
Another thing a novelist can do is choose the number of each sentence. Some writers prefer a long sentence embedded with commas, semicolons, and hyphens. I remember I was suffocated by reading Charles Dicken’s Nicholas Nickleby because there were a lot of sentences, each of which lasted more than 20 lines. The skillful writer knows the right number of words in the right situation.
The comic writer cannot use such a technique. She uses the page effectively. She sometimes draws the whole one page with a shocking scene on a new page aiming at the reader’s surprise as he turns the page. She can also divide the page into any number of frames, some big, some small. Sometimes the character pops out of the frame to give the reader a three dimensional feeling. In this point, comics are more dynamic.

6. Plot
The plot is the most important for both novels and comics: the beginning, conflicts, the climax, and the ending. If the plot is superb, the reader is, without even noticing, involved in the story and turns the pages to satisfy the anxiety to reach the ending as fast as possible. While the reader is turning pages, he pays little attention to the characters’ appearances, surrounding sceneries, or the look of the page. Whether a comic or a novel succeeds or not depends on the plot, I should say.

MORE ROADSIDE TREES IN NAGOYA

    MORE ROADSIDE TREES IN NAGOYA

  I was amazed at the scenery of Beijing when I visited it last week. No matter how far you may drive in the city, you will see tremendous number of skyscrapers and 100 meter level wide roads running in every direction.
  What surprised me most were the thick tall trees along the roads. They were planted so densely that you might think that they were like woods. I was lucky enough to see out of the window of the tourist guide car a lot of blossoms of cherry trees and apricots in full bloom. I asked the guide, “Isn’t the yellow sand from Chinese deserts blown into Beijing?” He answered, “No, since the city planted trees in and around the city for the Olympic Games, yellow sand changed its course and we have only little of it.”
  When I returned to Nagoya and saw the trees along the road, I was dismayed. How scarce and skinny they were! I couldn’t believe the scenery because I had been proud of the wide roads of Nagoya. Can’t the city authorities plant more trees in Nagoya so that it may not be called White City? The roads in Nagoya are said to be wonderful, but no way. They are far inferior to the ones in Beijing.
  I know the city’s economy is in recession, but can’t they spare some budget for planting trees so that Nagoya will be called Green City?

VISITING BEIJING AND XIAN

I visited Beijing and Xian from April 14 to 18 with my wife. My dream to visit the Great Wall and the Terracotta Warriors and Horses was at last realized. After an hour’s drive from Beijing, we arrived at the Great Wall. I saw a winding long and huge wall standing on a craggy mountain range.
It was a hard work for me to walk up the slope of the 5-meter-wide wall path because some parts of the path were so steep that you could not walk without gripping the iron pipe equipped at either side of the path. The wall was unexpectedly new, probably because the decayed bricks had been constantly renovated.
Actually I saw donkeys waddling down a mountain path with bricks on their backs.

sorry for them.
neighing no complaints
enlightened ones.

Most of the wall bricks near the entrance were deluged with graffiti. Innumerous tourists from all over the world carved the dates of their visits and names on the bricks. They wanted their names remain eternally on the Great Wall, but sorry to say, the bricks will be replaced with new ones or will be worn out sooner or later.

The Terracotta Army was disappointing. Since I had often watched the army on TV, I had known a lot about the soldiers: their two-meter height, different faces and hair style, and original colors. What I had been very much looking forward to was to see them up close with my own eyes.
   However, since the observatory path was built about five meters above the ground level on which they stood, I could not look closely at them. The soldiers I watched on TV were more impressive than the ones I saw from five meters away in the pit.
Moreover, I had to look down on them from high above, and so they looked much smaller than the real size. The Xian government should build the observatory path at the ground level on which the terracotta soldiers stand.
In the exhibition room, there was a photograph of the former President Clinton and his wife standing next to the terracotta solders. They were allowed to stand on the ground level. They looked amused standing within the kissing distance from them.

THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

THE SECRET OF SUCCESS

  This morning a drama series produced by the Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) called “Carnation” ended after a six-month broadcasting. It featured the life of a world-famous fashion designer, Ayako Koshino (Itoko Ohara in the drama) from her girlhood to her death at the age of 92 in 2006.
  In last week’s drama, Itoko gave wonderful words of advice to a woman with terminal cancer. She said, “Whatever you do at the age of 85 or over, it’s a miracle,” and “The secret to success is to fail again and again without giving up your hope.”
The late Steve Jobs of Apple, Inc. said the same about success. He said, “The secret to success is to repeat failures until you succeed.”
It is often pointed out that failure is the mother of success. I believe in their words. I will have to fail repeatedly until I realize my goal.
Nothing is more encouraging than “a miracle at the age of 85,” isn’t it?

Postscript:
  I watched a Japan Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) documentary “Kagayaku Onna” (A Bright Woman) on April 7, which featured a 25-year-old actress Keiko Kitagawa practicing the Japanese martial art of Iaido (the art of drawing the Japanese sword). She said, “What’s important in life is to make the most of what you can do at any given moment. Even though what you are doing may not look great, if you are doing your best while playing or working within your limits, that’s the best you can do. So, it’s great. Then, you could die at any moment without regret. You couldn’t have enjoyed yourself more or worked harder.”
  This is her philosophy of life, which she gained when she experienced the Hanshin Great Earthquake at the age of seven. What she says also gives a hint for success.

SUSPENSE IN ”WAR HORSE” 「

            SUSPENSE IN WAR HORSE

  I saw a Steven Spielberg’s movie, War Horse. It is a story of a bond between a horse, Joey, and his owner, a young man named Albert. When World War I started, Albert’s father sells Joey to the British military. Joey is sent to the war front. Four years later, Albert joins the army, and is also sent to the front, where he has his eyes injured. When he is lying on bed with his eyes bandaged in a war hospital, a solder says to him, “A miracle horse has come here.” Because the horse’s leg is badly injured, the vet says there is no way to save the horse. So, the commander orders the horse shot to ease the suffering. When a solder is about to shoot, a whistle is heard and he stops the gun. Albert slowly approaches the horse and touches it. He says, “This is my horse.” The commander does not believe him. So Albert says, “His four feet are white and there is a white mark in the center of his forehead.” When a solder washes the horse’s muddy legs, white feet appear. The commander brushes away the horse’s forehead and a white mark appears.
  The movie is based on a novel. I do not know whether the scene where Joey’s four legs are washed is written in it, but I admire the excellent foreshadowing: Albert has his eyes injured and his eyes are bandaged. The audience is forced to wait until the horse’s legs and its forehead is washed. Spielberg (or the writer) makes the most of suspense. I read in a how-to-write-a-novel book that the writer should prolong the suspense as long as possible.
  Jaws directed by Spielberg uses suspense. At the outset of the movie, a woman is attacked by something horrible. The audience has to wait until they know what the horrible thing is. Another excellent suspension is used in his Close Encounter of the Third Kind. The audience first sees queer small bright objects hovering in the night sky. The audience’s curiosity is hooked until they know the identity of the flying objects. At the final scene Spielberg reveals a giant space ship.
  War Horse’s scene to reveal the identity of the horse is not quite similar to the suspense used in Jaws and Close Encounter of the Third Kind, but to make the audience or the reader wait for the revelation is a good technique to attract the readers. I want to make the most of suspense in my stories.
