Nagoya Castle without the Golden Dolphins
I went to
Nagoya Castle after a long absence. Entering the castle ground, I saw the
castle, which I had often seen before, but I felt strange because I failed to
see the pair of the golden dolphins on the roof of the castle tower which I was
accustomed to seeing. You feel awkward when you cannot see what you always see.
Each
of the golden dolphins are 3 meters long and 3 meters high. The whole body is
golden leafed. During a stormy night in the Edo era, a thief tied himself to a
giant kite, flew to the top of the donjon, and stole some of the golden scales.
Where
are the golden dolphins now? They are exhibited in a square in Sakae, a busy
district in Nagoya. You have to pay no less than 500 yen to see the exhibition.
When I went to Sakae the other
day, I wanted to see the dolphins, but I didn’t feel like seeing them I had to
pay so much money. Why does Nagoya City charge a 500 yen admission fee?
I don’t like the spirit of gaining profit by
using the golden dolphins. I am sure they are angry at the commercialism.
