徒然草 １５０段
徒然草 第１５０段に次のようなことが書いてある。
いまだ堅固（けんご）かたほなるより、上手の中にまじりて、毀（そし）り笑はるるにも恥ぢず、つれなく過ぎて嗜む人、天性その骨（こつ）なけれども、道になづまず、みだりにせずして年を送れば、堪能（かんのう）の嗜まざるよりは、終（つい）に上手の位にいたり、徳たけ、人に許されて、双（ならび）なき名を得る事なり。
現代語訳
芸事で未熟なころから、ベテランの人たちに交じって、けなされようが、笑われようが、恥じることなく、素知らぬ顔で稽古する人が、才能は無くても、その道で立ち止まらず、道を踏み外さず、歳月をおくれば、才能があっても稽古をしない者よりは、ついには名人の域に達し、品格もそなわり、世間から高く評価され、ならびなき名を得るだろう。
いたく心に響いた。来月満７９歳になるが、この精神で小説も書いていきたいSuccessful people
are those who constantly go along his road, never going astray, and brush their
skills for many years without being disturbed by derision. They never feel
ashamed of being mocked or spoken badly of. Even if they are not talented, they
will be masters in their fields, persons of characters, and will be highly
acclaimed and attain unparalleled achievements. In the end they will exceed the
talented people who do no practice.
I will be 79 years
old next month. I will cherish this spirit and go on writing novels.
