２回目の「十戒」

　この前、５０年ぶりで「十戒」を見たが、前には見えていなかったものが色々見えた。エジプト旅行のおかげだ。
　５０年前「十戒」を見た時、ラムセス２世のことは何も知らなくて、単なる王様にすぎなかった。ラムセスと言う名前などどうでもよかった。映画では、頭の禿げた鋭い目のユル・ブリンナーを見ていて、ラムセスを見ていなかった。しかし、今回エジプトに行ってラムセスが急に身近な人物になった。と言うのは、私はラムセスのミイラを見たし、アブシンベル大神殿で２５メートルの高さの座像も見た。また、博物館で横たわっている長さ３０メートルの全身像も見からだ。さらに、私はラムセスが戦車に乗ってヒッタイト人と闘っている様子が描いてあるＴシャツを買った。だから、私にとってラムセスは全く関係のない人物ではなくなった。
　ラムセスの妻、ネフェルタリについても同じだ。５０年前はネフェルタリと言う名前には注意を払っていなかったが、今回親しみのある名前になった。遺跡の壁に彫られている彼女の肖像を見たし、ネフェルタリ神殿に行き墓の玄室に行ったからだ。今回見た「十戒」では、彼女を単に美しい女性としてではなく、生きているネフェルタリとして見たのだ。
　他にも色々なことが見えた。モーゼの姉が、赤ん坊のモーゼが入った籠を川に流すシーンがあるが、その川は実はナイル川だった。しかし、５０年前は単なる大きな川にすぎなかった。姉が籠から手を離すシーンでは、籠の周りに茂っていた背の高い草はパピルスだったが、５０年前は単なる雑草にすぎなかった。今、パピルスがどういう草か分かるのは、パピルス工芸店でパピルスから紙を作る実演を見たからだ。今回映画を見ていて、店で触ったパピルスのことを思い出し、「十戒」は私に関係がないものではなくなった。
　映画の終盤に、ラムセスが塔門（幅１００メートル、高さ５０メートル）から軍隊を率い、モーゼが導くヘブライ人を戦車で追撃するシーンがある。その塔門にはラムセスが戦車に乗って弓を射っている巨大な像が彫ってある。私は映画を見ていて塔門やラムセスの雄姿に親しみを感じた。私は実際に塔門を通り壁に手を触れたからだ。塔門から出たラムセスは両側に何十頭もの羊のスフィンクスが並ぶ大通りを戦車で走り抜けるが、私はスフィンクスも身近に感じた。私も同じ通りを歩きスフィンクスに触ったからだ。
　このようにして、「十戒」は身近で親しいものになった。５０年前に見えなかったものが見えたのだ。人には見えているのに、自分には見えないものがある。しかし視点を広げれば、何事ももっと見えるはずだ。世の中は知れば知るほどよく見えてくるのだ。

DISCOVERIES IN "THE TEN COMMANDMENTS"

　　Recently I saw “The Ten Commandments” for the first time in 50 years. I found many things which I had not noticed before. My visit to Egypt helped me to discover them.
　　When I saw the movie 50 years ago, I did not know anything about Ramses. He was just a pharaoh. His name, Ramses, was not important at all. I was watching the bold-headed, sharp-eyed actor, Yul Brynner, and not Ramses. However, because I visited Egypt, Ramses suddenly became a familiar person to me. I saw his mummy, his 25-meter-high statues in front of the Abu Simbil Temple, and his 30-meter-long statue lying in a museum. I bought a T-shirt which had a picture of Ramses fighting on a chariot against the Hittites. Therefore, the film became something very important to me.
　　The same was true with Nefertari, Ramses’ wife. She did not give me any impressions 50 years ago. She was just a beautiful queen. I did not pay any attention to her name, Nefertari. However, she turned out to be a familiar woman to me. I saw her figure inscribed on the ancient wall. I visited the Temple of Nefertari, where I saw the sanctuary of her tomb. I saw Nefertari in the movie this time not as a beautiful woman but as a real living Nefertari.
　　Several other things revealed themselves, too. The river which baby Moses’ basket floated on was the Nile, but it was just an ordinary big river 50 years ago. The thin tall grass which surrounded the basket when Moses’ sister is about to release it was papyrus. I didn’t know that the grass was papyrus when I first saw the movie. It was just wild grass, but now I know what papyrus looks like. When I went to a papyrus art craft shop, a clerk demonstrated how to make a piece of paper out of papyrus. When I saw the movie this time, I remembered the papyrus stalk I touched in the shop. The movie is no longer foreign to me.
　　Near the end of the movie, Ramses and his army all on their chariots come out of the pylon, a 100-meter-wide, 50-meter-tall gate wall chasing the Hebrew slaves led by Moses. A huge picture of Ramses shooting with a bow on the chariot was inscribed on the pylon wall in the movie. I felt familiar with the pylon and his brave figure, because I actually walked through pylons and touched the walls. Coming out of the pylon, Ramses drives his chariot along a path, on either side of which dozens of sheep-shaped sphinxes stand. I felt the sphinxes were close to me because I walked along the path and touched them.
　　In this way, “The Ten Commandments” turned out to be close and familiar to me. I saw what I had not seen 50 years before. I am afraid I do not see things other people see, but if I try to widen my view, I can see more. The world will reveal itself in direct proportion to the degree of how you understand it.
