私はチャールズ・ディケンズの『ニコラス・ニックルビー』を読むのに12年かかりました。32歳に読み始め、読み終えたのは44歳でした。

ところが、ロアルド・ダールの『マチルダ』に登場する4歳の少女マチルダは、それをほんの数日で読んでしまうのです。彼女はまさに驚異です。彼女は学校の校長であるトランチブル――恐ろしく、野蛮で、巨体の女性――と議論を交わします。そのやり取りは次のようなものです。

「何と言ったの？」とトランチブルが鋭く問い正しました。

「読んだんです、トランチブル先生」

「何を読んだの？」

「『ニコラス・ニックルビー』です、トランチブル先生」

「お前は嘘をついているよ、小娘！」とトランチブルは叫び、マチルダを睨みつけました。

「この学校に『ニコラス・ニックルビー』を読んだ子どもなど一人もいませんよ」

『マチルダ』のこの一節を読んで、私は驚きました。まるで40年ぶりに旧友ニコラス・ニックルビーに再会したような気がしたのです。懐かしかった。

       I spent 12 years reading "Nicholas Nickleby" written by Charles Dickens. I began to read it at the age of 32 and finished it when I was 44 years old. 

      This four-year-old girl named Machilda in "Machilda" written by Roald Dahl, reads it in just a few days. She is a phenomenon. She argues with her schoolmaster master named Trunchbull, a scary, savage, and giant woman. The argument goes like this: 

     "What did you say?" she [Trunchbull] asked sharply.

     "I said I've read it, Miss Trunchbull."

     "Read what?"

     "Nicholas  Nickleby, Miss Trunchbull."

     "You are lying to me, madam!" the Trunchbull shouted,  glaring at Matilda. I doubt there is a single child in the entire school who has read that book, ....

        I was surprised to read this passage in Matilda. I thought I met my old friend, Nicholas Nickleby after nearly 40 years of absence. I felt some nostalgia.
