 最近、家内とドアルド・ダールが書いた物語を読んでいる。英国の子供向けだが、中には難しい文が出て来て、英米科を卒業している私でも分からない分がある。そんな時は、チャットGPTに「これは何という意味か」と訊くと、即座に答えてくれる。

例えば、rich bratsとは何か」と聞いたら、次のように答えた。

Bratsは俗語で、行儀が悪く、甘やかされ、鬱陶しい子を表す。ネガティブな表現で、手が掛かり、人を馬鹿にし、自分勝手な子を言う。Rich bratsは、「甘やかされ、裕福な家庭で育ち。ちやほやしてもらえ、欲しいものは何でも手に入ると思っている子」を言う。

Recently, I have been reading Doald Dahl's stories  with my wife. Although they are written for British children, some of the sentences are so difficult that I, a graduate of English American Language Department, cannot understand them. In such cases, I ask Chat GPT like "What does this sentence mean?" Instantly it gives me answers. 

This is an example:

 I asked Gpt "What does 'rich brats' mean?" Here is the answer:

“Brats” is a slang word used to describe children who are seen as badly behaved, spoiled, or annoying. It’s usually negative and suggests that the child is demanding, disrespectful, or used to getting their own way.

In the phrase “rich brats,” it emphasizes that the children are not only spoiled, but also come from wealthy families—making them seem even more entitled or pampered.

１５年ほど前にニューカレドニア、別名、『天国に一番近い島』行った。

首都ヌメアは大きな町で、丘の上の教会に行き、通学生と話し、公園のバス停でヌメア人のおばさんに、ホテル行きのバスを教えてもらった。魚市場では、ありとあらゆる魚介類が売られていた。

　昨年、「天国に一番近い島」が「天国から一番遠い島」になった。フランスから独立を望む原住民と、独立を阻止するフランス政府との対立が暴動にまで発展した。ヌメアは機動隊が出動し、家に火がつけられ、バスは止まり、大混乱であった。死者が６人出た。
