「第三の男」最後の場面　the last scene

グレアム・グリーン著「第三の男」を、脚本を見ながら映画を見たが、併せて同作家の小説も読み始めた。「まえがき」によれば、小説は脚本を書くためにあとから書かれたという。

脚本や映画では主人公の心理を的確に掴むことはできない。画像を見ながら想像するしかない。ところが、小説は主人公の心理を描写してくれる。映画「第三の男」の主人公はホリー・マーチンズであるが、小説ではロロ・マーチンズと言う名前で登場する。また、キャロウェイ少佐の視点から書いている。

　以下はマーチンズがハリー・ライムに初めて遭遇する場面（映画の後半）である。マーチンズの心理が巧みに書かれている。

（マーチンズが夜道で誰かに追われているような気がするところから原文引用）：　

マーチンズは、自分が付けられているかを確認するため、わざわざ影をしっかり見ようとしなかった。が、通りの突き当りを過ぎ、角を曲がったところに、人に見つからないように壁にぴったり体をくっつけた体格のいい男がいた。マーチンズは立止って男を見た。どこかで見たような男だ。俺は、この２４時間で、あの男に慣れっこになっていたようだ。マーチンズは男から１８mぐらい離れており、夜道で黙って身じろぎせず自分を見ている男を見た。私服警官か、奴等の仲間だろう。ハリーを悪に落とし入れ、殺した奴等だ。まてよ、第三の男かも知れない。（松岡訳）

追記

ハリー・ライム役のオーソン・ウエルズの配偶者は、驚くことに映画「ショーシャンクの空に」で主人公の牢屋の壁に貼られたピンナップ美人、リタ・ヘイワースだ。

The Third Man (part 2)

I saw “The Third Man” with the help of the screenplay written by Graham Green. According to the preface, he wrote the novella as preparation for the screenplay. I am reading it now.

You cannot get the psychology of the protagonist in a screenplay or a movie. A film viewer must imagine the protagonist’s psychology judging from his/her behavior in the movie. However, a novel describes it minutely.

The protagonist in “The Third Man” is Holly Martins, but instead of that, Rollo Martins is used. Also, the novel is written from the point of view of Major Calloway.

The following passage is an excerpt from the novella, which shows how Martins encounters Harry Lime for the first time in the latter half of the film. It describes Martin’s psychology well.

(While Martins is walking along a quiet night street, he feels as if he is being followed by some strange figure):

“He didn’t bother to see whether he was being followed, to check up on the shadow. But, passing by the end of the street, he happened to turn, and there just around the corner, pressed against a wall to escape notice, was a thick stocky figure. Martins stopped and stared. There was something familiar about that figure. Perhaps, he thought, I have grown unconsciously used to him during these last twenty-four hours; perhaps he is one of those who have so assiduously checked my movements. Martines stood there, twenty yards away, staring at the silent motionless figure in the dark street who stared back at him. A police spy, or an agent of those other men, those men who had corrupted Harry first and then killed him—even possibly the third man?”

Surprisingly enough, Orson Welles, who played Harry Lime, was married to Rita Hayworth. Her pinup poster was used to cover the hidden escape hole in the protagonist's prison.

　大学生の時、私は国際学生協会（ISA）に所属していた。一種の英語部である。私はISAのスクリーンサークル部のリーダーで、英語の脚本を使って英語力を付ける活動をした。脚本の一つが『第三の男』で、今でも出だしを覚えている：I never knew the old Vienna before the war....(わたしは戦前の古都ウイーンを知らない….)

　30歳ごろ、『第三の男』のビデオをスクリーンサークル活動の記念に買ったが、一度も見る機会がなかった。

この度、『NHKラジオビジネス英語』１２月号の課題は『第三の男』の映画評の一節である。これを英語に訳すのだ。わたしは映画をもう一度見て、英訳のポイントとなる語句を勉強するためにビデオを再生した。

　ビデオは約１時間半であったが、以前映画館で気が付かなかったことが色々分かった。なぜ、タイトルが『第三の男』なのかが分かった（死体を運んだのは二人ではなく、三人目の男もいた）。脚本は作家グレアム・グリーンの作だが、彼は脚本を基にして同名の小説も書いた。ネットで調べたら、脚本が全部あり、印刷して、今度は脚本を手元に置いてもう一度名作を見ることにした。小説は図書館で借り、目下読んでいる。

　『第三の男』は１９９１年英国最優秀映画に選ばれている。英語を勉強するのに、脚本を見ながらビデオが見られるとは、すばらしい。グレアム・グリーン、ホ―・マーチン、ハリー・ライム（オーソン・ウェルズ）よ、ありがとう。

　以下は『NHラジオビジネス英語』の和英課題の一部である。

The Third Man 

When I was a university student, I belonged to the International Student Association (a kind of an English speaking club), I was the head of the screen circle group, which used English screenplays for improving English ability. One of them was “The Third Man.” I still remember the opening: "I never knew the old Vienna before the war…."

I bought a video of “The Third Man” for the commemoration of the screen circle activity when I was around 30 years old. Since then, I have never played it for many years.

   The December issue of “The NHK’s Radio Business English” chose “The Third Man” for the Japanese-English translation assignment. I played the video for the first time in order to get the idea of the movie and several key words for the translation.

   The video lasted for about an hour and a half. I learned a lot which I had not noticed when I saw the film in a theater. I understand now why it is called “The Third Man.” (Not two, but three men carried the dying man.) The screenplay was written by a novelist Graham Greene. He wrote the novel version with the same title based on his screenplay, too. I found the whole screenplay on the Internet. I printed it. I saw the movie again, this time with the screenplay. Now I am reading the novel which I borrowed from a library.

   “The Third Man” was voted as the greatest British film of all time in 1991. How nice it is that I can study it with the video and the screenplay. Thank you, Graham Greene, Holly Martins, and Harry Lime (Orson Welles).

The following Japanese passage is a part of the NHK Business English assignment for translation:

モノクロの映像が美しい。夜のウイーンの街路。子猫が暗闇に潜む男の靴にじゃれつく。突然、建物の窓が開き、その明かりで隠れていた男の顔が照らし出される。(課題の一部）

My translation:

The black-and-white image of the film is beautiful. A kitten plays with the shoe of a man standing in the darkness of a building on a street in Vienna, when suddenly the window upstairs opens and the light falls on to the man’s face.

変な夢 A Strange Dream

変な夢

昨夜は、また変な夢を見た。高校三年生の授業の寸前になって、授業の下準備がしてないことに気が付く。教材のプリントを作ろうと思い、大学受験の英語の過去問題集を職員室の書棚で探す。過去問を４０枚（４０人のクラス）コピーすれば、一時間の授業はもつ。ところが、過去問題集は何処にも見当たらない。時間は刻々と過ぎて行く。とうとう教室に行く前にチャイムが鳴ってしまう。わたしは、生徒に謝るべく教室に行く。生徒が二、三人しか教室にいなかった。何やら私は喚く。そこで目が覚めた。

教職を退職したのは１５年前だ。１５年も経っているのに授業の夢を見るとは、頭に授業がこびりついているのだ。

　前にも、同じような夢を見た。授業に行こうとしたら教科書がないとか。小テスト用の紙が必要になり、印刷室に行くと用紙が一枚もないとか。教室に行こうとしたが、教室が何処か分からないとか。

どうせ見るなら、もっと愉快な、楽しい夢を見させてほしい。

最新の科学技術で、脳に浮かべた画像がどのような物か、スクリーンに映し出すことができるようになったらしい。まだ画像はぼんやりしているが、そのうちに画像がはっきりし、見た夢をそのまま映画みたいに見られる時代が来るかもしれない。

楽しい夢なら見たいものだ。いや、変な夢でも面白いだろう。

A Strange Dream

Last night I dreamed a strange dream again. A few minutes before the senior high school third-year class starts, I realize I have not prepared for it. I look for a book of the past university entrance examinations for English in bookshelves in the teachers’ room to make the teaching material for the class. If I make 40 copies of one of the examinations (the number of the students in the class is 40), I can spend 50 minutes using them. However, I cannot find any past examinations at all. Time is passing fast. At last, the chime rings that tells the end of the class. I go to the classroom to apologize to them, but find only a few students there. I cry out nonsense. And I wake up.

I retired from teaching as many as 15 years ago, yet I dream of my English classes. They stick to my brain. 

    I saw similar dreams before. In the dreams, I cannot find my textbook; I go to the printing room to get some papers for a small test, but find no paper; or I fail to go to the classroom because I lose my way even in the school building.

   I want to dream a pleasant and amusing dream. 

   According to the cutting-edge scientific technology, you can see the image of a thing in your brain. The image is yet vague and there is much to be improved. However, in the future, the image will be clearer, and the time will come when you can watch your dream on a screen just like a movie.

   I want to see the dream if it is pleasant. No, no. Even a bad dream will be interesting.

加速する世の中 Accelerating World

加速する世の中　　　

　先日、ソフトバンクで新しいスマホに買い替えようと思い、店員と話した。店員は２０代の女性で、話し方が速く、ついて行けない。店員は専門用語を駆使して滔々と立て板に水を流すが如く話しまくるので、圧倒された。何度も、聞き直して何とか理解することができた。

　速く話すのはこの店員だけではない。最近、他にも早口で往生したことがあったが、誰であったか忘れた。

　世の中が加速している。懐かしの歌謡曲を聞くと、歌手はゆっくり歌っている。往年の藤山一郎、春日八郎、三橋美智也、美空ひばり、岩崎宏美、ペギー葉山等はゆっくり歌っており、私と波長が合う。今の歌手は速く歌い、踊り、忙しい。

　映画もそうだ。日本の映画（東京物語、チャンバラ映画、男はつらいよ）にしろ、アメリカ映画にしろ、台詞はゆっくりだったのに、今の映画の英語は早口だ。

　昔は手紙のやり取りがあった。時間をかけて手紙を読み、時間をかけて手紙を書いた。今はラインやメールで瞬時に伝わる。

　世の中は加速するばかりだ。ゆっくり景色を見て歩きたいのに、そうさせてくれない。

　　Accelerating World

The other day I dropped in at a SoftBank shop in an attempt to buy a new smart phone. The sales clerk in her 20’s talked so fast that I could not follow her. Moreover, she used technical terms once every 30 seconds. I was completely bewildered and overwhelmed by her torrential way of spkeaking. It felt as if I was talking with an alien who spoke something like Japanese. I often interrupted her, and managed to understand what she was trying to convey to me.

   She was not the only fast speaking person. I sometimes encounter such machine-gun-like speakers.

   The world is accelerating. Actually, when I listen to good old days’ songs, they (Ichiro Fujiyama, Hachiro Kasuga, Michiya Mihashi, Hibari Misora, Hiromi Iwasaki, Peggy Hayama, etc) sing very slowly. The tempos of their songs go very well with my heart beat. Today’s singers are very busy on the stage. They sing and dance as fast as they could.

   The same can be applied to movies. The stars in old movies spoke slowly. Such movies are, for example, “Tokyo Monogatari” directed by Yasujiro Ozu and “Otokowa Tsuraiyo” by Jiro Yamada and chanbara (Edo era sword fighting) films. The same can be said about old American or British movies. Whether the old movies are Japanese or English, the stars spoke slowly compared to today's stars.

   Writing letters was one of the most popular correspondence methods decades ago. They were read and written slowly decades ago. Today, you don’t have to spend time for correspondence. Lines and emails connect people in a blink of an eye.

   The world is running faster and faster. You can’t enjoy the beautiful scenery on your way. You must run faster and faster in order to catch up with the time. Otherwise, you can’t get on the ever-rapidly changing bus.

 

ゲームセンター Game Arcade

私が住んでいる近くにイオンモールがあり、三階のフードコートの隣には大きな（小学校のプールぐらい）ゲームセンターセンターがある。魚釣りや、モグラ叩きや、景品吊りや、スピードレースや、スロットマシーンや、パチンコや、太鼓叩きや、手をぐるぐる回して叩くゲーム（何と呼ぶのか）や、ヴィデオゲームや、ありとあらゆるゲームがある。

平日の午後四時を過ぎると小中学生も大人に混り、ゲームに熱狂する。土日は殺人的に子供が群がり、一日中大盛況で、ゲームの音も三階フロアーにガンガン鳴り響く。

わたしはほとんど毎日イオンのフードコートでコーヒーを飲むが、ゲームセンターの隣を歩くたびに、嘆かわしく思う。

児童のストレス発散にはいいだろう。しかし、ゲームに夢中になり、頭が単細胞にならないか。ゲーム代もかかるだろう。子供には、もっと知的で社会的な時間の過ごし方があるはずだ。ゲームの点数や景品の獲得や友達との競争に躍起になっている。

恐らく、日本中のイオンモールにゲームセンターがあると思うが、イオンの社長は日本の将来を背負って立つ少年少女の発育を何と心得ているのだろう。ゲーム漬の頭では想像力や社会性や知的発達は期待できない。日本の将来は暗いのではないか。

ゲームに没頭させるより、ゲームセンターを子供文化センターに替えてはどうか。ゲームを止めて、科学実験教室、物づくり教室、語学教室、読み書き算盤教室、運動教室、自然（天体、海洋）観察教室、芸術鑑賞教室、歴史教室、絵画教室、音楽教室、コンサートホール、名画鑑賞教室、名作朗読教室等を開いてはどうか。もちろん大人向け文化教室の開講も望みたい。

イオンの社長に訴えたい。

  Amusement arcades 

There is an Aeon mall in my neighborhood. On the third floor of the mall is an amusement arcade or so-called 'game center' in Japan) as large as an elementary school swimming pool. It is located just next to the food court where I often drop in at and sip coffee. The game center is full of various machines: fishing, whack-a-mole, catching attractive goods with crab-craw like tool, car races, slot machines, pachinko pinballs, playing drums, video games, and following and hitting the rotating lights (I can’t describe the game). There are many other games.

After four o’clock on weekdays, children are absorbed in the games. On Saturdays and Sundays, the game center is jam packed with children all day long. The games make unbearably noisy sounds that invade the food court where I sip coffee. Actually, I avoid sitting at a table near the game center.

The games may help the children to relieve stress, but I am afraid they will be game-centered, simple-minded when they grow up. They are absorbed in only winning the games, getting the attractive goods, or defeating their friends in the games. They (actually their) parents have to pay game fees.  They can't stop quitting the games.

They should spend their free time more significantly. What on earth does the president of the Aeon mall company think about the children’s mental development. They are going to shoulder the future of Japan. How can the game-mad children develop their social and intellectual mind? Simple-minded children will lack the power of imagination. Japan’s future is dark, isn’t it?

I have a suggestion: how about introducing a children’s cultural center instead of the game cente in the mall? Stop games and open interesting classes for children. Some of them are: classes for science experiments, art-crafts, foreign language learning, reading and writing and arithmetic, sports, nature observation (marine and space), art appreciation, history (Japan and the world), painting, music, reading famous story aloud and so forth. Building a concert hall and a theater for classical movies are also good ideas. Classes for adults are as important as those for children, too.

I strongly hope that the president of Aeon Mall Co. Ltd. will pay attention to my suggestion.

ロスト・キング The Lost King

「ロスト・キング」

映画『ロストキング』を観てきた。観る価値がある。

フィリッパという女性の執念で、５００年前に殺され、川に捨てられたリチャード三世の遺骨を発見する話。

発見するまでの道は障害が多く、発見後は人間のあさましさを見せつけられる。

障害とあさましさ

①  フィリッパは筋痛性脳脊髄炎で疲れやすい。

②  夫と別居しているが、息子二人を養育している。

③  シェクスピアの『リチャード三世』では、リチャードがせむし男で、犬に吼えられ、甥二人を殺し、王座を簒奪したと書かれており、通念になっている。

④  遺骨発掘の資金が足りない

⑤  発掘を支援していたレスター大学が協力を打ち切る。

⑥  発見後は、レスター大学が発見したかのように報道し、大学を首になった考古学者は博士号を授与される。フィリッパは脇役の立場になる。

フィリッパは、様々な障害を堪え、崩れそうになったが、執念が最後には実る。茨が痛ければ痛いほど、収穫した実は甘い。

リチャードが亡霊となって現れるが、フィリッパの心の裡を観衆に伝えるための工夫として捉えた。

黒澤明監督『生きる』（１９５２）では最後に公園を作る。ドイツの考古学者シュリーマンがついにトロイの遺跡を発見する（１８２２）。執念の勝利である。

”The Lost King”

    I saw “The Lost King” a 2022 British biological film directed by Stephen Freass. It was a good movie and is worth seeing.

   The protagonist, Philippa Langley discovers the skeleton of Richard III, who was supposed to have been killed and thrown to a river.

   She faces various obstacles on the way to the discovery; and after the discovery she sees ugly sides of human beings. They are:

1.  Philippa is easily tired because she is suffering from myalgic encephalomyelitis.

2.  She is divorced, but lives with her two sons.

3.  Shakespeare writes in “The Richard III” that he is a hunchback and is barked at even by dogs. He killed his two nephews and usurps the throne. She fight against this idea.

4.  She lacks the money to dig the site where the king is buried.

5.  The university of Leicester stops helping Philippa.

6.  The university changes its attitude after the discovery. It claims as if it discovered the remains. It gives the doctoral degree to an archaeologist Richard Buckley, who the university once dismissed. Buckley behaves as if he has discovered the remains, outdoing Philippa.

         Despite those obstacles that almost crushed her, Philippa finally discovers the remains.

    The ghost of Richard III appears in the film. It was used as a tool to reveal Philippas's psychology.

     The movie reminded me of “Ikiru,” (to live) a 1952 Kurosawa’s movie. The protagonist overcomes various obstacles and finally makes a park for children.   

Schliemann, a German archaeologist, also excavates the ancient city of Troy.

      What is common to them is a strong will and a spirit of perseverance.

墓参り Visiting the Grave

 墓参り

お彼岸の前日、9月２２日、久しぶりに大垣の墓参りに行ってきた。自宅から金山まで地下鉄に乗り、JRで大垣駅に行き、そこからタクシーを使った。草取りをして花を生けて、線香と蝋燭に火を付けてお参りして来た。

しかし、名古屋から大垣まで、暑い中の墓参りは、今年は特に疲れた。家に５時近くに帰ったが、疲れて晩飯を食べて、すぐ寝てしまった。７９歳の昨年はそんなに疲れなかったが、８０歳の今年は大いに疲れた。こんなにえらいのに行くべきなのか考えた。

お彼岸に墓参りをするのは昔からの慣わしである。その仕来りに沿って墓参りに行ってきたが、これは自己満足ではないかと思った。一日がかりで遠くまで行き、墓に手を合わせて帰って来るのは身体に応える。

父が笑って、「博、そんなに苦労して墓参りをしなくてもいいよ」と言っているような気がする。来年はどうなるか。

「ラジオビジネス英語」 ”NHK Radio Business English”

                                                                  ラジオビジネス英語

「NHKラジオビジネス英語」のThe Writer's Workshopで、最優秀賞を受賞した。(これまでに最優秀賞は、2011，2014，2018年と、三回受賞していたが、久しぶりの受賞である。この一年間ぐらいは、佳作さえ入賞できず、毎回、「ああ、まただめだ」としょげていた。今回も、せめて佳作をと思って、テキストを捲ると、な、なんと、最優秀賞に名前が載っていた。素晴らしい。没、また没、またまた没の連続で、テキスト代550円が、もったいないと思う毎月であった。この三カ月ぐらいは、日本語の課題文に引きずられない英文を心掛けていた。また、難しい、馴染みのない表現は避け、英語らしい英文を描くように心がけていた。訳し落としや、日本語の意味の取り違えなどに細心の注意を払ってきた。その成果が出たのかも知れない。今後とも最優秀賞を獲るべく、日英の語学力を磨いていきたい。

                                                            ”NHK Radio Business English”

I won the first prize in The Writer’s Workshop given in the monthly radio textbook, “NHK Radio Business English.” This is a Japanese-English translation workshop. The textbook gives a Japanese passage to be translated into English.

I have so far won the first prize three times (2011, 2014, 2018). It is 5 years since 2018. These past twelve or so months, my translation did not get even honorable mention. Every time I buy the text, I was disappointed with a sigh, “Ah, again. I have failed.” Every time I buy the textbook, I thought I was spending too much money (550yen) for the no-rewarding textbook. I thought it was a waste of money.

This time, I had expected that I would get no nothing, but, to my GREAT SURPRIZE and HAPPINESS, my name was mentioned as the first prize winner.

For the past three months, I tried not to be too much involved in the given Japanese passage, but tried to translate into English-like English. I avoided careless mistakes and tried to comprehend the true meaning of the given Japanese. My efforts have been rewarded, I should say.

I will brush both my Japanese and English abilities to win another first prize.

校長からの手紙 A Letter from a School Principal

 校長からの手紙

わたしの母校・興文小学校の校長から手紙が来た。

母校の校門の傍に、樹齢１００年以上もある楠が生えている。私は先日、短編小説『楠を抱く少年』を書き、「島崎藤村記念文芸祭」小説部門で一席を受賞した。興文小学校の校長に受賞の経緯を報告し、『島崎藤村記念文芸祭作品集』を寄贈した。その御礼の手紙である。

手紙には、お礼の文と、興文小の教育目標「伝統の誇りを持つ、強く正しい興文の子」が書かれ、最後に楠の写真を手紙に載せて頂いた。楠の愛称　は「興文の木」だそうだ。

A Letter from a School Principal

I received a letter from the principal of Kobun Elementary School, which I graduated from nearly 70 years ago.

Just by the side of the school gate, there stands an old camphor tree, which is more than 100 years old. I won the first prize in Shimazaki Toson Memorial Short Story Writing Contest. The title of the story is “A Boy Who Hugs the Camphor Tree.” I informed her of my winning the prize and donated a copy of the collection of the contest winners. She wrote a thank-you letter to me with the recent pictures of the tree.

 According to her, the educational aim of Kobun Elementary School is “To be a child who has a strong will and a right judgement supported by the traditional Kobun pride.” She says the nickname of the tree is “Tree of Kobun” (rising culture).

先日、マイケル・クルーズ先生（中京大学講師）の「シェクスピア講座」を受講して、天地が引っ繰り返るほど驚いた。いや、頭を強打されたと言った方がいい。

シェクスピアは文才があると常々感服していたが、これほど感服したことはない。体が震えるほどだ。彼は戯曲の大天才だ。

 以下は「ハムレット」第三幕・第二場の抜粋である。一見、ハムレットと恋人オフィーリアの、男女間の語らいのようだが、未成年者禁断の語らいである。

オフィーリア　ええ、どうぞ。

ハムレット　僕がワ〇〇のことを考えていたとでも思うのですか？

オフィーリア　わたし、ワ〇〇のことを考えているのよ。

ハムレット　処女のワ〇〇の間に割り込むのは、かなりいい考えなんだよ。

オフィーリア　何のこと？

ハムレット　ワ〇〇のことさ。

 

当時、「ハムレット」を見に来た一般大衆は、この卑猥な掛け言葉（pun）を聞いて、大いに、にやにやした、いや、大笑いをしただろう。

 ADULTS ONLY “Hamlet”

I was greatly surprised when I attended Chukyo University English teacher, Michel Cruise’s class on Shakespeare the other day. It felt as if I had had my head hit hard by a stick.

I knew Shakespeare had literary genius, but I truly believe now he is a genius, a magician of words. I was so astonished that my body trembled.

The following is an excerpt from “Hamlet” act III, scene II. Hamlet and his lover Ophelia are intimately talking with each other, but the content of their talk is ADLUTS ONLY.

 

Hamlet. Lady, shall I lie in your lap?

                          [Lying down at Ophelia’s feet.

Ophelia. No, my Lord.

Hamlet. I mean my head upon your lap?

Ophelia. Ay, my lord.

Hamlet. Do you think I meant country matters?

Ophelia. I think nothing, my lord.

Hamlet. That’s a fair thought to lie between maid’s legs.

Ophelia. What is, my lord?

Hamlet. Nothing.

Michel Cruise explained the meanings of some obscene words. Each of them has a note in the parenthesis.

Hamlet. Lady, shall I lie in your lap.（vagina）?

                               [Lying down at Ophelia’s feet.

Ophelia. No, my Lord.

Hamlet. I mean my head (penis）upon your lap (vagina）?

Opelia. Ay, my lord.

Hamlet. Do you think I meant country（cunt=vagina）matters?

Ophelia. I think nothing.（zero＝０＝hole=vagina）

Hamlet. That’s a fair thought to lie between maid’slegs.（vagina）

Ophelia. What is, my lord?

Hamlet. Nothing.（vagina）

Thus the above excerpt can be rewritten in the following way.

Hamlet. Lady, shall I lie in your vagina?

                               [Lying down at Ophelia’s feet.

Ophelia. No, my Lord.

Hamlet. I mean my penis upon your vagina?

Opelia. Ay, my lord.

Hamlet. Do you think I meant cunt matters?

Ophelia. I think vagina.

Hamlet. That’s a fair thought to lie between maid’s vagina.

Ophelia. What is, my lord?

Hamlet. Vagina.

I guess the common people who saw and heard the scene giggled at the obscene puns. Rather, they may have laughed a lot.
