映画「ヒッチコック」 "HITCHCOCK"

1959年作、ヒッチコックの恐怖映画「サイコ」の舞台裏を描いた映画「ヒッチコック」を見た。数十年前に「サイコ」を見た時には全然知らなかったことが今になって分かった。

１．ヒッチコックは妻の浮気を疑い、怒りをこらえていた。この怒りの爆発が若い女性（ジャネット・レイ）をバスタブで殺すシーンの撮影で効果を発揮する。ジャネットの下手な演技に怒ったヒッチコックは、自ら、彼女に向かってナイフで何度も何度も突き刺す動作をする、彼女は恐怖で顔を引きつらせ、真拍の演技となる。ヒッチコックがナイフをがむしゃらに振り下ろしていたとき、彼は妻と愛人をめった切りにしていたのだ。

２．パラマウント映画会社は「サイコ」の興行は失敗すると思い、資金援助を断る。そのため、ヒッチコックは自らの全財産（プールも）を抵当に入れて資金を捻出する。妻のアルマは協力して節約生活を続けるが、最後には「サイコ」が大ヒットする。

３．「サイコ」の宣伝においてもヒッチコックは戦略家ぶりを発揮する。「サイコ」を映画化するにあたり、「サイコ」の小説を全て買い占めるように秘書に言いつける。結末を大衆に隠すためだ。さらに、「サイコ」の封切りにあたり、ヒッチコックは「映画を見ている人が恐怖で倒れても責任は負わない」と宣言する。

４．「サイコ」と言えば、あの「キー、キー、キー、キー」という鋭い、奇怪な、恐ろしい不協和音が身体や脳を切り裂くがこの効果音で、バスタブでの殺戮場面は観客に最大の恐怖心を抱かせる。しかし、映画「ヒッチコック」では、ヒッチコックは始め、あの場面に効果音は一切使わないと言っていた。

　I saw “Hitchcock,” which depicted the making of “Psycho.” The film revealed several things that I had not known when I saw it decades ago. They were:

　　1. Hitchcock was angry with his wife, Alma, because he suspected her of having a love affair. The anger gave terrific effects to the bathtub murder scene of a young woman (Janet Leigh). Impatient with her poor acting, Hitchcock jerked a knife at her again and again, who consequently showed a realistic action of horror. When he was jerking the knife at Janet Leigh, he was really jerking it at Alma and her lover.

　　2. Paramount Pictures did not assist Hitchcock financially because the president was doubtful about the success of “Psycho.” Therefore, Hitchcock decided to raise money by mortgaging all his property, including the swimming pool. Alma cooperated with him. Their thrift life style continued until the success of “Psycho.”

　　3. Hitchcock was a great strategist in advertising “Psycho.” When he decided to make the novel into a movie, he ordered his secretary to buy all the copies of “Psycho” so that nobody would know the ending of the story. When at last “Psycho” was about to be released, Hitchcock declared that the movie was so horrible that he would not be responsible for any sickness on the part of the audience.

　　4. Whenever “Psycho” is mentioned, it is always accompanied with the queer, horrible, sharp, jarring note. The sound is so eerie that it penetrates your brain and body. The background sound of the stabbing scene in the bathtub is a great success, but according to the movie, Hitchcock first refused to use any sound effects in the scene.
