図書館長への手紙

今朝（12月15日）名古屋市鶴舞中央図書館館長から電話がありました。私の投書のお礼と提案を早速実施したということでした。
実は、一週間ぐらい前に、同図書館の「ご意見箱」に館長宛の手紙を入れて、ある提案をしたのです。以下はその概略。
「私はいつも愉しく図書館を利用させていただいておりますが、一つ残念に思うことがありますので筆を取りました。
それは、階段踊り場の吹き抜けのガラス窓の、ちょうど目線の位置に、数枚のポスターが貼ってあって、外の景色が見えません。全面総ガラスの窓にポスターを貼るなどということは図書館設計者のデザインを無視したものです。貴図書館の特徴はあの吹き抜けのガラス窓です。美しい借景が台無しです。私は踊り場から景色を見るとほっとします。ポスターをどこか他の場所に移していただけませんか。ご検討下さい」
館長が私の意見を取り入れてポスターを外してくれたようで、嬉しく思います。これで図書館利用者は景色をエンジョイできます。近日中に図書館に行って、窓から景色を見てこようと思っています。

A LETTER TO A LIBRARY DIRECTOR

This morning (December 15),  I had a telephone call from the director of Tsurumai Library. He thanked me for my letter of suggestion and told me that he would carry out my humble proposal.
About a week before, I had written it and put it into the library suggestion box. The following is the content:
“I am a constant user of your library and have enjoyed reading books, but the other day I was disappointed to find some posters pasted on the staircase window panes blocking the beautiful view of the autumn trees outside. The architect who designed the library did not intend to have the panes pasted with such papers. One of the unique characteristics of your library lies in the huge window panes that run from the ground floor to the ceiling of the second floor. Through the window you can enjoy the view. I always feel relaxed when I stand on the staircase landing and look at the scenery through the window. Therefore, if you could remove the posters, I would be obliged to you.”
I am glad my proposal has been put into practice. Now you can enjoy the grand view through the windows. I am looking forward to going to the library.
