BUDDHA ON MT. ASO
I visited Mt. Aso with my wife on November 11. Luckily we had a chance to see “Buddha” lying on his back above the clouds. Mt. Aso has one of the largest caldera in the world with a circumference of around 120 km. In the center of the somma enclosing the caldera stand five mountains. When you look at the mountains from a viewpoint of the north somma on a foggy morning, they look like a profile of Buddha lying on his back above the sea of clouds filling the caldera. Jaggy Mt. Nekodake forms Buddha’s head; high Mt. Taka, forms his chest, round Mt. Naka, his belly; and the other mountains, Mt. Eboshi, and Mt. Kishima, legs and feet.
Both the sightseeing bus driver and the tourist guide said that it was quite rare to see such a beautiful supine Buddha.
