グレアム・グリーン著「第三の男」を、脚本を見ながら映画を見たが、併せて同作家の小説も読み始めた。「まえがき」によれば、小説は脚本を書くためにあとから書かれたという。

脚本や映画では主人公の心理を的確に掴むことはできない。画像を見ながら想像するしかない。ところが、小説は主人公の心理を描写してくれる。映画「第三の男」の主人公はホリー・マーチンズであるが、小説ではロロ・マーチンズと言う名前で登場する。また、キャロウェイ少佐の視点から書いている。

　以下はマーチンズがハリー・ライムに初めて遭遇する場面（映画の後半）である。マーチンズの心理が巧みに書かれている。

（マーチンズが夜道で誰かに追われているような気がするところから原文引用）：　

マーチンズは、自分が付けられているかを確認するため、わざわざ影をしっかり見ようとしなかった。が、通りの突き当りを過ぎ、角を曲がったところに、人に見つからないように壁にぴったり体をくっつけた体格のいい男がいた。マーチンズは立止って男を見た。どこかで見たような男だ。俺は、この２４時間で、あの男に慣れっこになっていたようだ。マーチンズは男から１８mぐらい離れており、夜道で黙って身じろぎせず自分を見ている男を見た。私服警官か、奴等の仲間だろう。ハリーを悪に落とし入れ、殺した奴等だ。まてよ、第三の男かも知れない。（松岡訳）

追記

ハリー・ライム役のオーソン・ウエルズの配偶者は、驚くことに映画「ショーシャンクの空に」で主人公の牢屋の壁に貼られたピンナップ美人、リタ・ヘイワースだ。

The Third Man (part 2)

I saw “The Third Man” with the help of the screenplay written by Graham Green. According to the preface, he wrote the novella as preparation for the screenplay. I am reading it now.

You cannot get the psychology of the protagonist in a screenplay or a movie. A film viewer must imagine the protagonist’s psychology judging from his/her behavior in the movie. However, a novel describes it minutely.

The protagonist in “The Third Man” is Holly Martins, but instead of that, Rollo Martins is used. Also, the novel is written from the point of view of Major Calloway.

The following passage is an excerpt from the novella, which shows how Martins encounters Harry Lime for the first time in the latter half of the film. It describes Martin’s psychology well.

(While Martins is walking along a quiet night street, he feels as if he is being followed by some strange figure):

“He didn’t bother to see whether he was being followed, to check up on the shadow. But, passing by the end of the street, he happened to turn, and there just around the corner, pressed against a wall to escape notice, was a thick stocky figure. Martins stopped and stared. There was something familiar about that figure. Perhaps, he thought, I have grown unconsciously used to him during these last twenty-four hours; perhaps he is one of those who have so assiduously checked my movements. Martines stood there, twenty yards away, staring at the silent motionless figure in the dark street who stared back at him. A police spy, or an agent of those other men, those men who had corrupted Harry first and then killed him—even possibly the third man?”

Surprisingly enough, Orson Welles, who played Harry Lime, was married to Rita Hayworth. Her pinup poster was used to cover the hidden escape hole in the protagonist's prison.

　大学生の時、私は国際学生協会（ISA）に所属していた。一種の英語部である。私はISAのスクリーンサークル部のリーダーで、英語の脚本を使って英語力を付ける活動をした。脚本の一つが『第三の男』で、今でも出だしを覚えている：I never knew the old Vienna before the war....(わたしは戦前の古都ウイーンを知らない….)

　30歳ごろ、『第三の男』のビデオをスクリーンサークル活動の記念に買ったが、一度も見る機会がなかった。

この度、『NHKラジオビジネス英語』１２月号の課題は『第三の男』の映画評の一節である。これを英語に訳すのだ。わたしは映画をもう一度見て、英訳のポイントとなる語句を勉強するためにビデオを再生した。

　ビデオは約１時間半であったが、以前映画館で気が付かなかったことが色々分かった。なぜ、タイトルが『第三の男』なのかが分かった（死体を運んだのは二人ではなく、三人目の男もいた）。脚本は作家グレアム・グリーンの作だが、彼は脚本を基にして同名の小説も書いた。ネットで調べたら、脚本が全部あり、印刷して、今度は脚本を手元に置いてもう一度名作を見ることにした。小説は図書館で借り、目下読んでいる。

　『第三の男』は１９９１年英国最優秀映画に選ばれている。英語を勉強するのに、脚本を見ながらビデオが見られるとは、すばらしい。グレアム・グリーン、ホ―・マーチン、ハリー・ライム（オーソン・ウェルズ）よ、ありがとう。

「モノクロの映像が美しい。夜のウイーンの街路。子猫が暗闇に潜む男の靴にじゃれつく。突然、建物の窓が開き、その明かりで隠れていた男の顔が照らし出される」（私訳は英文参照されたし）

The Third Man 

When I was a university student, I belonged to the International Student Association (a kind of an English speaking club), I was the head of the screen circle group, which used English screenplays for improving English ability. One of them was “The Third Man.” I still remember the opening: "I never knew the old Vienna before the war…."

I bought a video of “The Third Man” for the commemoration of the screen circle activity when I was around 30 years old. Since then, I have never played it for many years.

   The December issue of “The NHK’s Radio Business English” chose “The Third Man” for the Japanese-English translation assignment. I played the video for the first time in order to get the idea of the movie and several key words for the translation.

   The video lasted for about an hour and a half. I learned a lot which I had not noticed when I saw the film in a theater. I understand now why it is called “The Third Man.” (Not two, but three men carried the dying man.) The screenplay was written by a novelist Graham Greene. He wrote the novel version with the same title based on his screenplay, too. I found the whole screenplay on the Internet. I printed it. I saw the movie again, this time with the screenplay. Now I am reading the novel which I borrowed from a library.

   “The Third Man” was voted as the greatest British film of all time in 1991. How nice it is that I can study it with the video and the screenplay. Thank you, Graham Greene, Holly Martins, and Harry Lime (Orson Welles).

My translation:

The black-and-white image of the film is beautiful. A kitten plays with the shoe of a man standing in the darkness of a building on a street in Vienna, when suddenly the window upstairs opens and the light falls on to the man’s face.
