５０パーセント

先日、私が住んでいるマンションの管理組合主催で防災訓練が行われた。その一環として、各戸に「無事です」と書かれた標識が配られた。震災があったときに「我が家は無事です」ということを管理組合に知らせるために、標識を玄関の取っ手にかけておくのだ。担当の人が一戸一戸廻っていき、標識を見てこの家の家族は無事かどうかを確認するのである。

後日、管理組合から通知があったが、標識の回収率は50パーセントだったそうだ。たったの５０パーセントだ。もちろん、標識を玄関にかけておくという方式に疑念をもつ人もいるだろう。しかし、管理組合の防災訓練に協力した人が、１６０世帯の内の８０世帯だったとは驚いた。

防災訓練に非協力的な人がこんなに多いとは嘆かわしい。「標識を玄関に出した人には飴玉をあげます」とでもしなければ、誰も協力しないのだろうか。

50 percent

The other day, the management association of the condominium where I live held an earthquake drill. As one of the drill activities, a sign that said, “WE ARE SAFE” was delivered to each family before the drill. On a certain morning each family was supposed to hang the sign from the knob of the entrance so that the man in charge could know whether this family was safe when he went around the condominium checking the signs.

   After the drill the management association announced that 50 percent of the families had hung the signs. Only 50 percent! I know some people are against the sign method of the drill, but I was disappointed to know that only 80 out of 160 families had cooperated with the association.

   It is a pity that a lot of people did not take part in the earthquake drill activity. I am afraid they do not participate in it unless they can get some candies.

私の住んでいるマンションの近くに小さな公園があり、私は毎朝そこで体操をしている。

先日、そこに生えていた巨木（多分、ケヤキ）が４本切り倒されていた。恐らく近所の住民が市の土木課にお願いして切らせたのだろう。落ち葉が落ち、日陰になるからと言う理由からかもしれない。

どの木も、私が４０年ほど前にマンションに引っ越してきた当時に植えられた木で細長い木であったが、４０年もたつと腕で抱えきれないぐらいの太さになり、高さは５階建てのマンションぐらいあった。巨木の眺めは心を休ませてくれていたのに残念なことになった。

そういえば、近所の空き地や林や藪が更地にされ、どんどん新築の家が立っている。緑が消えるのは何とも痛ましいことだ。今では、近所はマンションと細長い三階建てのビルばかりになってしまった。なんと殺風景なことヨ。

Cutting down Trees

There is a small park near the condominium where I live. I make it a rule to take exercise there every morning.

Just a few days ago, four big trees (probably zelkova trees) were cut down. Because the falling leaves were nuisance for the neighboring inhabitants and because the trees made shadows upon their houses, they requested the Civil Engineering Division of Nagoya City to get rid of them, I guess.

The four trees were planted about 40 years ago when I moved to live in the condominium. At that time, they were tall and thin, but now they grew so big and so tall as a five-story condominium that you could not hold any one of them in your arms. The sight of the trees with full of green leaves always consoled me.

Now, new houses have replaced the neighboring empty lots and the places where trees and bushes once grew. It is painful to see big stumps and decreasing amount of foliage around you. As I walk in the neighboring area today, I see nothing but new condominiums and slender two or three story buildings. How desolate a scenery!
